As with our many alumni serving with distinction, NSU Law is extremely proud of the national recognition the faculty have received by being ranked by U.S. News and World Report with a Top 20 peer recognition for the Legal Research and Writing program and a national ranking at 56 for the Health Care Law program, which places that program first in Florida. The American Bar Association has also released data regarding the law schools’ national bar passage rates, which show that NSU Law’s cumulative bar passage rate (measured after two years) is 93.3%, placing the law school among the top third (at 65th) in overall bar passage success.

The efforts to improve bar passage, build a world class legal research and writing program, and become a national leader in academic areas such as health care law all require a focus on enhancing the student experience and building a program that demands the best from our students, faculty, and staff from well before the first day of law school.

The process starts with a rigorous admissions process that assures that J.D. applicants are well prepared to attend law school. The law school has reduced its size and raised the entrance credentials for each of the past three years, and we plan to continue doing so in the years to come.

FOSTERING LEADERSHIP. This phrase captures the energy at the Shepard Broad College of Law this spring. For the first time in the law school’s history, The Florida Bar presidency will be held by an NSU Law alumnus. The entire NSU alumni community is proud to recognize John Stewart for his accomplishment. Earlier in the year the school showed its pride when alumna Ariana Fajardo Orshan was confirmed as the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida. The Honorable Judge Orshan had already served with distinction as a judge in the Eleventh Judicial Circuit Court.

In Broward County, the incoming president of the Broward County Bar Association will be alumnus Michael Fischler, a longtime leader in the region’s legal community. In fact, hundreds of NSU Law alumni serve the voluntary bar associations, governmental agencies, and in leadership roles across Florida.

Once students arrive, their Torts, Contracts, Criminal Law, and Legal Research & Writing courses are supplemented with Legal Skills and Professionalism, a year-long course designed to develop each student’s critical reading, logical reasoning, and professional identity. All first-year courses retain the Socratic Method at the heart of preparing a student to enter the legal profession, but they also engage each student in his or her learning and preparation.

This spring, for example, students completing their first year had the opportunity to finish their Legal Research & Writing Mock Oral Arguments as part of the Feinrider Moot Court competition at the Broward County Courthouse. The final round of arguments included a judicial panel with The Honorable Justice Robert J. Luck of the Florida Supreme Court and The Honorable Judge Melanie May of the Fourth District Court of Appeal.

Many students spend their first summer participating in the NSU Law’s Judicial Internship Program, which provides them a first-hand look at the court systems and the importance of responsiveness, care, and commitment owed to every person seeking to resolve a conflict through the courts. Students also use their summers to complete their pro bono service obligation, assuring that each student becomes directly involved in legal services. In addition, the students begin to work in paid and volunteer positions to develop the real-world skills they need to transition into the practice of law.

In their second and third years of law school (or fourth year for the part-time students), the students study a wide range of legal subjects, lead law school organizations, and undertake legal work in the clinics. The vast majority of the students take advantage of the commitment to guarantee every student a live-client experience, reinforcing a curriculum that integrates the practical and professional with the theory and context that prepares the graduates both in their first job and throughout their entire career.

Each of these steps helps the NSU Law students develop as professionals and leaders. Their passion for clinics, student organizations, and national competitions translates directly into their leadership in the courtrooms, bar associations, boardrooms, and law firms.

In addition, the students see the deep commitment of their faculty and staff engaging in professional bar associations, academic conferences, research projects, international assistance initiatives, and other work that keeps the NSU Law faculty at the forefront of academic and professional growth within legal education and the practice of law. Whether the topic is technology’s impact on the practice of law, access to medical care, business regulation, free speech, or a myriad of other topics, the NSU Law faculty and staff have worked with the academic community and the bar associations to develop improved outcomes and explore the nuances of complex challenges facing society. And if that were not enough, the Shepard Broad College of Law has become a leader across all aspects of legal education. In March, the law school hosted the largest national conference ever organized on masters-level education for non-lawyers. The school now offers an LL.M. degree and undergraduate programs in addition to the J.D. and M.S. degrees. By serving a broader array of students, the law school can limit the size of each program to assure that it admits highly capable students ready to tackle the rigorous academic program designed specifically for that student population.

None of these efforts would be possible without the NSU Law alumni, an accomplished group of lawyers who serve the community with commitment, integrity, and enthusiasm. As employers for the student interns, volunteers in the competition programs, speakers at the student organizations, adjuncts, professional role models, and donors, the law school flourishes because of the alumni who support the Shepard Broad College of Law.Together, the law school faculty, staff, and alumni foster leadership in our students and each other. Together, we are making a difference for our students and our community. Thank you for all you do!

FACULTY SPOTLIGHT

Professor Kathy Cerminara is a national scholar on health law and policy, with her scholarship focusing on quality of life and end-of-life decision making. She has been a professor at NSU Law since 1998, and has written over 25 law review articles and book chapters on these critical issues. She also leads the NSU Law concentration on Health Law and assists with the M.S. in Health Law.

Professor Cerminara’s focus on health law began as a research assistant with her Torts Law professor, Alan Meisel at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law. He was conceptualizing what became the leading end-of-life decision-making law treatise in the country, THE RIGHT TO DIE: THE LAW OF END-OF-LIFE DECISIONMAKING (Aspen 3d ed. 2004 & cumulative supplements to the present) (co-authored with Alan Meisel and Thaddeus M. Pope). “I had the opportunity to help analyze the handful of cases existing on the subject and to assist him in conceptualizing the book. I continued to work with him for the rest of my law school days, inspiring a passion to which I was able to return after a few years.”

Cerminara has traveled nationally and internationally to present talks and serve as a

panelist on end of life ethics. She acknowledges that one of the most challenging aspects in this area of law involves the emotions surrounding the decision-making, due in part to a lack of advance planning. “As an academic, I find that wherever I give a talk, people come up to me to share their personal, often emotional, stories.”

Over the past 17 years NSU Law has grown the health law concentration curriculum and strengthened ties with many of the other colleges at NSU. The NSU Law Health Law concentration is ranked first in Florida and 56th in the nation by the US News and World Report.

Cerminara is very proud of the roles her students have undertaken, across all aspects of health law. Anabel Cordero, with Cerminara above, was a research assistant for Professor Cerminara, a certified legal intern with the NSU Adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Clinic and a member of the ILSA Journal, First Generation Professionals Legal Society, and the American Civil Liberties Union NSU chapter. “NSU law students are especially well-qualified to meet this need in the legal community,” says Cerminara of Cordero and her classmates.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

Aleeyah Jones started her legal career by earning a B.S. in Legal Studies from the University of Central Florida in 2016. She took another leap on May 9, 2019, by earning her juris doctor. Jones has held several internships as a NSU Law student but the Children and Families Law Clinic provided her the avenue she needed to make the connection between theory and practice. In the clinic, “I came across practically every issue that I was taught in my Family Law, Juvenile Law, and Dependency Workshop classes.” In addition to her clinical experience, Jones also worked with the Public Defender’s Office through the 2018 Rebecca Knox Public Interest Law Summer Fellowship. Both Jones’ clinic experience and her summer fellowship helped shape her professional career goals. Jones reflected that those “experiences were either going to tell me whether I enjoyed family law or not, and I realized I love it. The fellowship and my clinic experiences were priceless.”

Although Jones was deeply committed to her clinical clients and her fellowship, she also sought to remain grounded while in law school. “The best thing I have ever done for myself was taking time out of my day to go to the gym and unwind. It is hard to find the time but doing so is extremely important for your physical, emotional, and mental health.”

In tandem with his position as a senior patientcare counselor, Harith Dias earned his Master of Science in Health Law in May 2019. Like many of the students in the M.S. in Law program, Dias has been highly motivated to incorporate his courses into his professional experience.

“Everyone is influenced by health care at some point in their lives,” noted Dias. He was motivated to study health law because he wanted to better understand the legal aspects of health care and how local and state public-health agencies make a difference in people’s lives. His favorite class has been Legal Foundations because it helped him fully understand “how laws are created, enforced, interpreted, and changed.”

Dias chose NSU because of the challenging coursework and the flexibility to work full time while completing the program on his own schedule. “Keeping an organized and consistent

schedule helps me tackle assignments, boosts my confidence, and reduces my stress levels so I can maintain a positive work-life balance.”

Dias recognizes that his success in the program is already an achievement. He noted that learning in an online environment is not for everyone; “you have to be very self-motivated.”

The NSU M.S. faculty and fellow students are consistently engaged throughout the program. He also recognized the importance of his faculty. They use live online discussion groups, and are available by email, phone, or video chat to “answer questions or help me understand the module. The faculty truly care about the success of their students.”

The faculty truly care about the successof their students.

ARIANA FAJARDO ORSHAN, J.D.U.S. ATTORNEY

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida Ariana Fajardo Orshan was appointed in September 2018 following confirmation from the U.S. Senate. Her role was the culmination of successful positions with the State Attorney’s office in Miami-Dade County and as a Judge with the Eleventh Judicial Circuit Court of Florida.

While at NSU Law, her initial goal was to become a tax attorney. Her involvement with the Nova Trial Association and her legal internships, however, changed her career path. Of these, the most significant was the internship with the State Attorney’s office. It became a life changing experience. “My internship was on the job training, and it turned out to be the only job I applied for following my graduation.”

After several years with the State Attorney’s office, Fajardo Orshan left to join a law firm

focusing on family law. She chose the field because she wanted to interact more directly with people. During her first week as the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida she met with the over 220 Assistant U.S. Attorneys and support personel. She emphasized the importance of their responsibilities to enforce and defend the laws of the United States of America.

The NSU Law Federalist Society and the Student Bar Association invited U.S. Attorney Ariana Fajardo Orshan to speak to NSU Law students in November 2018. Fajardo Orshan urged students to continue to be involved in organizations in which they have a passion, to seek out internships, and to commit to making a difference in the lives of the clients they serve.

WALTER G. “SKIP” CAMPBELL JR.

KRUPNICK CAMPBELL SPOTLIGHT

In 2018, Walter “Skip” Campbell Jr. passed away at the age of 69. Skip had joined Jon E. Krupnick 45 years earlier as an associate and later became partner of the firm Krupnick & Campbell n/k/a Krupnick Campbell Malone Buser Slama Hancock, P.A. Under the stewardship of Krupnick and Campbell, the firm built a reputation for honesty, integrity, and excellence. “Skip Campbell and I created an unparalleled culture of hard work and enthusiastic trial advocacy on behalf of our clients,” Krupnick said of his partner.

Mr. Campbell served in the Florida Senate for a decade and then as mayor of Coral Springs, all while maintaining a strong trial record. He was an Adjunct Professor at NSU Shepard Broad College of Law. On April 10, 2019, Broward County honored the legacy of Mr. Campbell with the official naming of the County Courthouse West Building, as the Walter G. “Skip” Campbell, Jr. West Building. Dignitaries, judges, clients, lawyers, NSU Law students, and alumni gathered to pay respects to the man that so many described as a tireless advocate and a nice guy.

Mr. Krupnick has been a longtime proponent of NSU and the College of Law since its inception. He served as an Adjunct Professor, a member of the College of Law’s Board of Governors, and a generous donor. Jon’s wife, Elaine P. Krupnick is a 1984 graduate of NSU’s College of Law, where she was a member of Law Review and on the Dean’s List.

Elaine dedicated ten years of her career to public service as a State Attorney in Broward County. Jon & Elaine have both championed the passion for public service and philanthropy into a lifelong dedication.

Krupnick is no stranger to the courtroom and has acquired numerous national records in trial advocacy. “I swung for the fences when I took on a case. It is all about telling a story, and who tells the jury the best story and works the hardest will be successful,” said Krupnick. Skip and Jon never tried a case together because of their differing styles, but their partnership in trial advocacy was the perfect marriage. Mr. and Mrs. Krupnick and the Krupnick Campbell Malone Buser Slama Hancock law firm generously donated the main courtroom in the College of Law, Leo Goodwin Sr. Building. The firm designed and funded the courtroom with the belief that the courtroom is the heart of the law and the heart of the law school. “I always wanted to return to the law the wonderful gift that trial law gave to me,” stated Krupnick.

The partnership of Mr. Krupnick and Mr. Campbell exemplified the best in a shared commitment to public service and client dedication.
