The massive canopy is suspended by cables linked by giant steel posts, which appear in bright appealing colors. Soft translucent roof sheet allows maximum sunlight into the farms and markets. Walking on the market level, people have direct visual access to most part of the factory, witnessing the process of energy making and waste recycling. The massive structure, on the other hand, stands as a local monument, engaging people to get involved in local farming and waste recycling. 2032: living without external infrastructure Plug-in housing is made possible by flexible infrastructure, the supply demand is supplied by medium size built-in biomass mills and veritical farm. The infrastructure therefore be- comes the structure, the living module will be prefabricated and is able to be customized by clients. such type could be applied to campus housing. 2032: moving around iDrive (or whatever you prefer to name it) is a 3 door 2 seats hatchback, fueled by either hydregen or bio-diesel, which are both product of biomass. It is 2/3 the width of traditional car, therefore a two lane street would fit three iDrives. 2032: fueling your car With the biomass facility scaled down to public size, people share backyard garden as community farm, which then made into biofuel. What if we apply the similar trick as what Michael Bay does to the robots? What if we expose the structure and infra- structure and dress them up with in- triguing appearence? What if we bring industry to the heart of the town and next to your home? Can we therefore make people in love with indutry by pro- viding high tech buildings? And beyond just buildings, can we change people’s attitudes towards the environmental issues we face today, by improving their awareness on the ways how energy and food come to us? So what if we design buildings that have no external infrastructure at all? Can we change the way we travel? Can we deal with the issue of rising pet- rol price? Can we have supply chains that are more than just one-way? By using agricultural residues, mu- nicipal and industrial waste and some types of energy plantations as the feed- stock, it is one highly efÀcient and re- newable energy source. It causes very little pollution, requires little space and is relatively safe. The primary proposal is then a place that combines an biomass factory with ur- ban farm and food market. The waste produced by agriculture could be im- mediatly collected, treated and in turn become feedstock to energy production. The output includes heat, electricity, bi- ogas, biofuel, and fertilizer which can then be used back to agriculture. The site is in the 20,000 m2 empty slot in the Broadmeadow town center indutrial area, adjacent to food manufacture fac- tories, which will provide organic waste as feedstock and be the potential bio- mass product buyers.
