As a part of the Randstad, the metropolis of the Netherlands, Delft puts itself on the map by representing a cluster of knowledge, where education, creativity, innovation and technology is intertwined with daily life. The Smart Start area is essential for this vision because it is directly located near the railway station, which connects the city with the other major cities of the Randstad, like Rotterdam and The Hague. The Smart Start area is the entrance and core of Delft and therefore represents the technological city.

VISION

Smart Start is the name of the vision for the Spoorzone Area. The core values of the Municipality of Delft are history, innovation and sustainability. The history of Delft is well represented in the city centre, innovation and sustainability will be represented in the new Spoorzone Area. The Spoorzone area has a core, the stage of Delft, where all the data of the adjacent smart living areas is collected. This data on e.g. energy consumption, infrastructure and water usage, subsequently will be used to give feedback to the users, for research by institutions like the Technical University of Delft or by involved companies to improve their services. This way the application and use of technological and sustainable innovations can be constantly improved. The areas surrounding the core of the Spoorzone provide high-quality housing, with integrated smart energy systems, smart water systems and smart mobility. Some examples are energy-neutral housing, closed water systems (white, grey and black) and tracking the data of car/bicycle usage.

Business Zone Living LabExposure VenueThe business zone of Smart Start is a great location for this Citizen M hotel combined with flexible office Spaces, since it is located right next to the new train station. The hotel will be used both for business and holiday visits.

The exposure venue is a lively, dynamic area with a city centre character. It provides a mix of functions and can be seen as the core of Smart Start. It provides retail, leisure and apartments for empty-nesters and starters. The museum that is found here exposes the collected data from the Smart Living areas.
