Broughton Bypass Update - August 2016

HOCHTIEF (UK) and Lancashire County Council would like to thank you for your continued patience while the work on Broughton Bypass takes place.

The £23.7m bypass is funded by the Preston, South Ribble and Lancashire City Deal, which will help to create more than 20,000 new private sector jobs and see over 17,000 new homes built across the area, along with new school places, open green spaces and new health provision to cater for the growing population.

Here is an update on how work is progressing with the bypass.

A6 Garstang – Whittingham Lane

Over the last month, there has been a hype of activity undertaken in the northern section of the scheme. Number 35 and 37 Whittingham Lane have been demolished and stabilisation of the carriageway has been completed between the proposed underpass and Whittingham Lane. You will really begin to see the bypass taking shape in this section.

August will be another challenging month as we aim to install the precast units for Helms Farm underpass, start work to divert United Utilities Hodder Aqueduct and complete the drainage activities in this section.

Whittingham Lane – Blundell Brook

Now all the wildlife in this section have been successfully removed and relocated from the works area, work has started on Whittingham Lane roundabout and the dual carriageway between Whittingham Lane and Brooklands Bridge.

The topsoil has been stripped and approximately half of the drainage has now been installed. Over the next month our aim is to complete the roundabout drainage and stabilise this particular section of the highway.

Blundell Brook – M55 Junction 1

Like the northern section of the scheme, the site between Blundell Brook and the M55 has really started to take shape.

Both water diversions have been completed and we aim to complete the gas diversions within the next week, adjacent to the A6.

Brooklands Bridge is coming along well with the cofferdams planned to be completed at the end of this week. The cofferdams are designed to keep water and/or soil out of the excavation to enable the bridge to be built.

The permanent pile foundations for the bridge are scheduled to start being installed next week. The piles are constructed by boring thirty meters into the ground and casting concrete. Once complete this will form the foundation for the bridge to be built on.

Finally, work is progressing well on the school and church car park with the foundations complete and installation of the underground attenuation drainage tank is scheduled to start soon.
