Hello, welcome to Brutes & Babes.

Thats how the first Brutes & Babes began, published in Wizard Magazine, June 1992, almost 20 years ago. Hmmm, perhaps this one should start...

Hello, welcome back to Brutes & Babes. No, thats not quite right... some of you may have never read Wizard, nor downloaded the original tutorials, or even been born by then.

As we all know, women; girls, dames, chicks, females, etc., come in all different shapes and sizes. With any luck, the information in this series of tutorials will give you many of the tools you need to draw all kinds of women successfully.

This first group of tutorials on Female Anatomy - BABES (of course) - I have broken down into ten different sections. Each tutorials is 5 pages in length.

Spent some time thinking about how to structure these new tutorials. Ive decided to group them under major subjects... create a series of tutorials that detail many of the different aspects as they pertain to the overall group subject.

Ive found drawing women one of the hardest aspects of drawing comics, or any other form of art for that matter. Pretty women, ugly women, old women, young women, skinny women, fat women, muscular women, sexy women, teenagers... doesnt matter, drawing women is tough. Its a struggle; Ive probably failed at it more than Ive succeeded, but you have to keep trying.

Female faces... the toughest thing of all to draw on the toughest thing to draw of all. Say that three times fast. Tut #5 starts the process... outlines the rules to draw a classically beautiful face, and then how-to very the proportion and shapes of the features, and still drawing an attractive face, and the whys behind the rules.

BRUTES and BABES #4 utilizes many of the ideas presented in the first 3 tutorials, discussing and detailing the hows and whys of drawing differ-

ent types of female characters, from the sexy super-hero, to the everyday woman, to the most

grotesque of female monsters. Not a tutorial to miss.

Tutorial #3 continues the lessons and ideas discussed in the previous tutorial, dealing more specifically with the limbs, female arms and legs, and how the muscle works into the hands and feet.

#2 starts the discussion on female anatomy... the bones, muscle, and fat that comprise

woman, girl, grandma and siren. This tutorial deals specifically with the torso; shoulders

    through upper thighs.

The first tutorial deals with feminine proportion, from ideal to heroic to realistic. Learn how to measure proportion in your own drawings, and develop the abilities to control proportion to design realistic looking characters with vastly different looks.

The final tutorial in the series, IN MOTION examines the female form as it moves; bends, twists, turns, runs, jumps, etc. and details some simple rules to help you start moving your well-drawn female characters.

This 9th tutorial explores how light plays over the female form, creating shadow, and deals

with the female form in space.

B&B #8 looks at the difference between real-life women/females, and their often idealized and exaggerated illustrated counterparts. Well touch on how to use real-life reference to aid in drawing women.

In this tutorial, we discuss the importance of body language: everyone stands differently,

eats differently, walks differently, etc., and why it is that how your female character behaves

physically can tag that character, and help you move her and successfully act out her role.

Tutorial 6 continues with the process of break-ing down the hows of drawing the female face... outlines the rules used to draw a classi-cally beautiful face from any angle, and the whys behind the rules.

    babes: body language!

    babes: real vs. exaggerated!

    babes: light & shade!

    ... keep drawing!

One word of advice I try to tell everyone... set time aside, daily if you can, even if its only for 30 minutes... set that time aside every darn day to draw. Make a committment to it, make it part of your life, like excersize, gaming or couch potato-ing, whatever your thing is. Make drawing your thing... really the only way to get better.

I hope youve enjoyed this peek into the next 10 Brutes and Babes. I have a lot of ground to cover in this set, and I hope youll join me.

The first B&B, BABES:Proportion, is due out 1/25/12, with others to follow every week or two after.

    Enjoy! And remember...

Weve got a heck of a lot of work ahead of us... so wed better not dawdle. It takes time to learn,a and hundreds of hours of work/study until we get to that first decent drawing, dont waste a minute.

    lets get to it!
