The Course This Certificate IV has been designed to help you achieve the Certificate IV in
Small Business Management BSB40407 and provide the skills and knowledge to
assist you in business success, in a practical manner.
About small business
A huge percentage of businesses in Australia, are small businesses. For
example, more than 96% of businesses in Queensland and Victoria are small
business (www.business.gov.au). In a competitive arena such as this it is
important that you plan and maximise your product and/or services to your best
advantage.
Small business operators need to be not only entrepreneurial, but have a great
foundation of small business management skills. In today’s environment you
need to be innovative, you need to be flexible, technologically savvy, and strive
to improve and change your services to reflect your consumers’ needs.

You need to complete all 10 units of competency to be awarded this qualification.

BSBSBM401A Establish legal and risk management requirements of small business
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to identify and
comply with the regulatory, legal, taxation and insurance requirements, and risk management
needs of small business.
BSBSBM402A Plan Small business finance
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to develop a
financial plan to support business viability.
BSBSBM403A Market the small business
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to develop and
implement marketing strategies, and to monitor and improve market performance.
BSBSMB404A Undertake small business planning
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to research and
develop an integrated business plan for achieving business goals and objectives. Specific
legal requirements apply to the management of a small business.

BSBMKG413A Promote products and services
This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to coordinate and review the promotion of
an organisation's products and services.
BSBREL401A Establish Networks
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to develop and
maintain effective work relationships and networks. It covers the relationship building and
negotiation skills required by workers within an organisation as well as freelance or
contract workers.
BSBSBM405A Monitor and manage business operations
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to operate a
small business and to implement a business plan. The strategies involve monitoring,
managing and reviewing operational procedures. Specific legal requirements apply to the
management of a small business.
BSBSBM406A Manage small business finances
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to implement,
monitor and review strategies for the ongoing management of a small business's finances. It
also includes day to day financial management of the small business. Specific legal
requirements apply to the management of a small business.
BSBCMM401A Make presentations
This unit covers the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to prepare, deliver
and review a presentation to a target audience.
BSBWOR404B Develop Work Priorities
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to plan one's
own work schedules, to monitor and to obtain feedback on work performance and
development. It also addresses the requirement to take responsibility for one's own career
planning and professional development. No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification
requirements apply to this unit at the time of endorsement.
BPP01 The Business Plan Portfolio (final assessment)
This final assessment has been designed to provide an action learning opportunity for you as a
small business person. The assessments that you have already completed in the rest of your
Certificate IV will now come together in a step-by-step manner that allows for the
accumulation of that work to be the fundamental elements of this last assessment. It
concentrates on the practical elements of planning for a business and demonstrates that all
sections of the Business Plan are interrelated. The benefits of designing a Business Plan will
not become apparent until it is implemented in your workplace. Then the constant monitoring
and redesign will give you a sound basis to follow and grow your business.

COURSE DELIVERY
Small Business units will be offered in the first instance as distance education.
QUALIFICATION
After you have completed this Cert IV in Small Business Management you may
choose to complete more units of competency, and then you can be awarded with
two separate Certificate IVs – the Certificate IV in Business (Small Business
Management) and the Certificate IV in Celebrancy. (CHC42608)
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS OF INTEREST
The Certificate IV in Small Business Management has many common units with
other Business qualifications. After completing this qualification you may like to

Management trainers are all experienced in owning and operating small businesses.
As we wish to offer you the best specialist in the subject area for a holistic
approach during your training, you may have more than one trainer/assessor
working with you, depending on the unit of competency.

ASSESSMENT
The assessment process is designed to allow each participant to demonstrate the outcomes
required by each unit. You should expect a range of assessment methods, such as written
activities, preparing documents, gathering workplace samples, and the overall project of
designing a Business Plan portfolio. Once your assessments are received they take 5-7
working days to be assessed and you will be given feedback via email. You are welcome to
ring about your course at any time to discuss with your tutor.
THE AWARD
Australian Celebrations Training Pty Ltd is a nationally recognised Registered Training
Organisation to deliver Certificate IV in Small Business Management and issue a Certificate
to successful participants. Where a participant does not complete all of the qualification
requirements, a Statement of Attainment will only be issued for units of competency
achieved.

RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING (RPL)
RPL is offered to all students and is available on application. Recognition will be provided to
participants who have the knowledge and skills required within the competencies, regardless
of how they were achieved (e.g. through formal or informal training, life experience, work
experience). Recognition will be provided for qualifications or units of competency achieved
through other Registered Training Organizations.
