UNIT 29: Installing and Upgrading Software

Assignment 2: (P4, P5, P6, D1)

Scenario

You work for a company called Nautical Computer Systems (NCS).

NCS build computers for home and business and they also provide training and support for their

customers too.

Although you have been employed both in the graphics department and the web design department

you are being moved to the technical department. In this department you will be expected to show

an understanding of computer hardware and software. You will be expected to be able to build and

upgrade computer systems. You will be expected to know about different operating systems and

system software. You will also be expected to be able to install and upgrade software.

In this second assessment you will demonstrate your practical abilities by preparing and giving a

demonstration of software upgrading and installation. You must:

• justify the installation and upgrade;

• plan the installation and the upgrade;

• design a procedure to back out of the software upgrade;

• design and implement a procedure for preserving data integrity during the upgrade

• Finally you must demonstrate how to install a piece of software and upgrade a piece of

software whilst preserving data integrity during the installation.

You will first be installing a data backup program called FBackup.

You will then be upgrading an existing Windows XP system to Windows 7. The existing system has

the user’s data stored in the “My Documents” folder and various applications already installed. You

will need to use FBackup prior to the upgrade to ensure that all of your data is securely backed up.

Task 1: Demonstrate and record how to install the DrawPlus X3 Graphics Studio program

on your system.

P4 Record and complete both a software installation and upgrade

Task 2: Demonstrate and record how to upgrade Antivirus Software 2012 to Antivirus

Software 2014.

P5 Record and complete a software upgrade

Task 3: Some of NCS’ employees might wonder why we go to the trouble of upgrading

software. You must be able to justify why an upgrade is required. Write a justification for

upgrading the AntiVirus.

D1 Justify a particular installation or upgrade.

Task 4: Write a report that describes why the user acceptance process is important
