Building A More Perfect Union

Union Hospital

2 0 0 1 A N N U A L R E P O R T

Not many years ago hospitals were closing entire inpatient units and converting them

for a variety of outpatient services. Union Hospital, like many other hospitals,

experienced the rapid transition to outpatient care while seeing its inpatient numbers

decline steadily.

However, that decline has reversed and inpatient admissions are on the rise again.

Union Hospital is among those hospitals experiencing rapid growth in both outpatient

and inpatient services, increases that have pushed the hospital facilities to their

maximum capacity. On most days we are scrambling to find beds for all the patients.

The increase in patient numbers is being seen in most areas of outpatient care as well,

including outpatient surgery, emergency care, diagnostic, therapeutic, and

rehabilitation services.

A growing local population and the aging of the baby-boom generation have

contributed to the upturn in demand for hospital services. Another major factor

bringing more patients to Union Hospital is the growth of our medical staff in recent

years. With more than 200 active staff and courtesy staff physicians we have vastly

expanded the range of services we offer here.

As the result of this growth, Union Hospital is in the midst of its largest facility

expansion in more than thirty years. The most visible project is the Boulevard South

Addition, a three-story wing facing the Boulevard that will be the largest addition to

Union Hospital since 1970. When completed, this project will dramatically change

the look of the Boulevard side of the hospital.

William W. HardingPresident and CEO

The first floor of the Boulevard South Addition will house an expanded outpatient

Cardiology Center and Vascular Center. The second floor will provide rooms for

thirty-two inpatient beds, bringing the total inpatient capacity of the hospital to

approximately 135. Remodeling and renovation of the existing building adjoining the

addition will provide an expanded Pain Management Center, Inpatient Physical

Therapy Center, Hospice Room, and Physician Library.

The third floor of the addition will be built for patient care services. A decision on the

specific use of the third floor will depend on how the hospital’s priorities evolve over

the coming year.

Building new hospital space is one thing. Staffing it is another challenge that is being

addressed well before the planned opening in mid-2003. The addition of inpatient

beds here will require additional staff in the Nursing, Laboratory, and Radiology

departments, and other professional and support services in the hospital.

While the shortage of nurses is a problem that has gained national attention, we are

optimistic that Union Hospital’s nursing needs will be met. As the result of all the

national publicity about the nursing shortage and the opportunities for nursing

careers, many nursing schools are reporting enrollment increases.

Industrial Rehabilitation

The only thing worse than beinginjured on the job is to return towork and have the injury reoccur.Physical therapist Ty Ghezzi notonly helps rehabilitate injuredworkers, but teaches them how toavoid a re-injury. A simulatedwork environment at theHealthplex provides a valuable lesson in safe lifting.

Construction

Construction work for theBoulevard South Addition beganduring the summer of 2001.Viewed from the roof of the hospital, the steel skeleton of thethree-story building is beginningto rise over the Boulevard. Theproject is slated for completionduring the first quarter of 2003.

Union Hospital continues to attract highly qualified nurses to fill job openings

and has started recruiting and hiring more nurses anticipating the addition of more

inpatient beds.

Another project now underway is the expansion of the Union Hospital Emergency

Department. The current facility has surpassed its designed capacity of 36,000

patient visits a year. The addition to the ED will provide expanded patient care areas.

One of the goals of the Emergency Department expansion is to reduce the waiting and

treatment times for emergency patients with minor injuries and illnesses.

The addition of two more emergency physicians has helped to improve our

performance and further improvements are expected when the additional space

is completed.

Together, the Boulevard South Addition and Emergency Department expansion

project carry an estimated price tag of $18 million. Hospital revenue bonds have been

sold to raise the funds necessary for much of the project cost. Contributions from the

community have surpassed $1.25 million.

MRI

Higher quality images, quicker imagingtimes, and improved patient comfortare all provided by the new state-of-the-art magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) system installed in 2001. MindiOberholzer, R.T. (R)(MR) standsbeside the patient before beginning thescanning process.

Digital Mammography

Digital imaging is starting toreplace the traditional filmimages that radiologists haveused for a century. UnionHospital’s digital mammographysystem will screen thousands ofwomen each year for breast cancer. Radiologist NormanCrocker, M.D. is studying digital mammography images onhigh-resolution monitors in thehospital’s Radiology ReadingRoom.

Occupational Therapy

There’s no reason therapy can’t be fun! Occupational therapist, Martha Gallego, provides therapy services to people of all ages, including children fromone month up to twelve years ofage. Pediatric therapy services areavailable for children with develop-mental delays, learning disabilities,Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism, and orthopedic conditions.

While The Boulevard South Addition and the Emergency Department Expansion

project are just beginning, Union Hospital has completed its third medical office

building on the 25-acre campus. The $2.0 million building includes four suites for

physician groups and was fully leased from the time the building opened early

in 2002.

And while all the construction projects are adding substantial value to the hospital’s

facilities, Union Hospital makes its greatest economic impact on the local economy

as an employer. Union Hospital provides wages and benefits to more than 800

people. Healthcare dollars turn over six or seven times in the community where they

are spent. This year Union Hospital will represent more than half a billion dollars of

positive economic impact in the form of wages, goods and services purchased, plus the

compounding effect of that spending.”

Our expanding facilities, growing medical staff, and new services are all evidence that

Union Hospital is meeting its goal of providing local access to quality healthcare and

prices comparable to the lowest cost hospitals in Ohio. This is good for our patients,

our community, our local employers, and everybody who calls the Tuscarawas valley

their home.

Medical Office Building Atrium

An arching skylight floods the patient waitingarea with light in the new medical office building located on Medical Park Drive at theback of the hospital’s 25-acre campus. Fourphysician groups will occupy the office suites.Enjoying the view provided are Michael M.McCombs D.O. and William V. Swoger,D.O., and Randall W. Franz, M.D.

Mobile Medical Unit

Union Hospital’s new Community Health and WellnessDepartment brought health screening and educationevents to the community starting in 2001. The 38-foot-long Mobile Medical Unit provides a complete clinic onwheels when the nurses and other staff members travelto locations around Tuscarawas County. The vehicle isequipped for vision, hearing, and pulmonary functiontesting with lab stations and an exam room.
