StFX and COADY St. Francis Xavier University (StFX) is a liberal arts university,

founded in 1853, in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada

StFX annually admits over 4,000 students in: arts, science, nursing, education, adult education, and business and information systems

Coady is the international extension arm of StFX, and its commitment to social justice

THE ANTIGONISH MOVEMENT

A people’s movement for economic and social justice which began in Nova Scotia during the 1920s

Prominent founder of the movement, Dr. Rev. Moses M. Coady, believed everyone could be a “Master of Their Own Destiny”

Based on empowering the disadvantaged through adult education and group action

Program Goal: To strengthen organizations involved in community-driven development by providing high quality, leadership development opportunities for mid and senior level staff

Collaborative offering between St. Francis Xavier University and the Coady

Self-directed, distance education program Begins with mandatory three-week Foundations Institute in Antigonish,

Nova Scotia Credit for this three-week institute can be incorporated into the

Diploma Program for those who wish to pursue both programs Students have five years to complete the program

Uses interactive, experiential learning methods which bridge theory and practice

Creates stimulating environment for learning

Collaborative learning environment is fostered among facilitators and participants, recognizing rich and diverse experiences in the group

Participants encouraged to reflect on their own experience throughout the program and take responsibility for own learning

PROGRAM OBJECTIVESBy the end of the Diploma Program, participants will:

Strengthen their capacity to lead and support communities and groups in community-driven development initiatives;

Strengthen their capacity to support and catalyze organizational learning and change in a sustainable and participatory manner;

Reflect on the underlying values and philosophies of development and transformative leadership to strengthen their commitment to social justice;

Explore conceptual linkages between participation, good governance, development and social change;

Develop their capacity to act collectively through knowledge sharing, networking and multi-stakeholder processes to achieve greater impact at national and global levels;

Develop practical competencies in self-directed research and learning, as well as inquiry-based processes for social learning at the organizational and community level.

CO-OPERATIVE INQUIRY SEMINARS

One-week issue-based research seminars, based on a methodology called co-operative inquiry

Participants name topics of personal interest and discuss, research and reflect on individual practice and new knowledge within a small group environment

Participants must successfully complete 3 issues-based seminars

PROGRAM FEES Applicants from the global South are eligible for bursaries that

cover most of the cost of tuition, room and board. Special

efforts are made to enable women and aboriginal peoples to
