OUTSTANDING LEARNERS

OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS OUTSTANDING FUTURES

No. 4, 11th March 2020

Principal’s Report…

The first half of Term 1 is over and we have certainly had a

busy start to the year.

Last week the Bundaberg District State Secondary Swimming

carnival was held at Norville Pool. While our team was only

small I would like to congratulate all the swimmers for their

participation and effort in representing North and thank the

parents for attending. On Tuesday, 3rd March we held our

first ‘Day of Excellence’ for the year for high achieving year 4-6

from our feeder primary schools. The students were

challenged with several problem solving activities throughout

the day that required the use of creativity, communication and

cooperation. It was great to see so much excitement and

enthusiasm amongst the students.

On Friday Year 8 Medieval day was held. Thanks to the Humanities faculty for organising great activities that kept the

students highly engaged & congratulations to the students who came to school in some fantastic medieval costumes.

On Friday also, the Girls Academy held a luncheon to celebrate

International Womens' Day. It was wonderful to see parents,

elders and members of the Girls Academy advisory committee

attending with the girls.

On Saturday, Mrs Jensen accompanied our 2 finalists Emily and

Brayden to the zone

competition of the Lions

Youth of the Year. Both

students improved

further on their first

round and while they did

not progress to the next competition, they were excellent ambassadors for

the school and did a wonderful job.

Our 4 yearly School Review is being conducted next week March 16-18.

Three external reviewers will be at North interviewing staff, students,

parents and community representatives. They will be looking at what we

are doing well and areas for development. The recommendations and

commendations will form the basis of our next 4 year Strategic Plan.

The Coronavirus continues to be a hot topic in the media. We should exercise caution and practice good hygiene. The

following are useful tips:

1. Wash hands often and thoroughly (hum Happy Birthday TWICE, feels like forever but that is what it takes)

2. Remain 1.5m away from people who cough and sneeze

3. STAY HOME IF YOU ARE SICK

Symptoms for COVID-19 include:

fever

cough

sore throat

breathing difficulties.

Queensland Health have a Facebook page and a Blog COVID-19 with up to date and accurate information or you can

call 1300HEALTH.

If you or your family are sick please stay home and seek medical advice. Please notify us immediately if you have been

at risk or have any concerns. See below for advice from the Department of Education for hand hygiene.

The installation of air-conditioners in classrooms this year has created a very positive improvement to the classroom

environment. Students and teachers are no longer sweating and feeling exhausted by the high temperatures and

while there are a small number of areas eg the hall and Industrial Technology workshops that are not air-conditioned

the majority of the school is now cool. In addition to the air-conditioners we are currently having solar panels

installed on C Block roof which will significantly increase our solar energy generation. We will also be undergoing an

electrical system upgrade which will occur at night to minimise the disruption to students and their school day.

In our next Newsletter I look forward to sharing the results of our School Review.

Effective hand hygiene is vital

As the coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to evolve, it is

important to remember that effective hand and sneeze/cough

hygiene is the best defence against viruses and can help

prevent the spread of illness.

Lead by example and encourage your children to:

wash their hands regularly with soap and water,

before and after eating, and after going to the toilet

use alcohol-based hand sanitiser if soap is not

available

cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or the inside

of their elbow

dispose of tissues in the bin immediately

if they’re unwell, stay at home and avoid contact with

others such as touching, kissing or hugging.

Check out the 20 second routine video for effective

handwashing.

Better Buddies Anti-Bullying Committee 2020

Our newest members

of the Better Buddies

Anti-Bullying

committee received

their badges on

Parade and have

begun meeting in

their lunch hour to

share great ideas and

activities which

promote our strong

anti-bullying stance at

the school.

Our focus this year in

the RAS lesson

delivered by the students on this committee will be KINDNESS. To prepare for this new RAS lesson, we are asking all

RAS classes and their teachers to start thinking about who the students are in their RAS class that they would regard as

KIND? What constitutes KINDNESS?

It is time to start throwing kindness around like confetti at BNSHS in 2020. #choosekind

Rowing News

Bundaberg North High rowing team is back into training

hard on Friday afternoons and Sunday mornings. We

have approximately 8 rowers ranging in ability from

novices to experienced rowers. The captain of our rowing

team, Jess is doing a wonderful job at mentoring our new

team members. The first 2 sessions are free and if you

choose to continue after this, you can join Bundaberg

Rowing.

There are 3 regattas held in term 2 and the team will have the opportunity to enter the Central Queensland titles in

June. We have a great band of parent helpers and an excellent coach. If your child would like to row they should come

and see me for more information.

We are all looking forward to an enjoyable and successful

season.

RAS Lesson – KINDNESS

Our Better Buddies Anti-Bullying Committee delivered their first lesson for the year to two RAS classes this week. The

theme of the lesson is KINDNESS. One of the activities students are required to do is to nominate a person in their RAS

class that they consider to be kind and justify the nomination. Two to three students nominated per class are then

drawn from the KINDNESS JAR. The students recognised for Week 6 were:

TIRROAN D

TIRROAN C

We are also setting the students a challenge to participate in five random acts of KINDNESS throughout each week.

It is time to spread KINDNESS around like Confetti at BNSHS.

Year 12 Business guest speaker

As reported in the media recently, Bundaberg’s Pacific Gold

Macadamias, Brisbane based Macadamia Marketing International

and Lismore’s Macadamia Processing Company will all consolidate

under the one brand officially on 1st April to become known as

MARQUIS MACADAMIAS. We would like to thank the General

Manager of Marquis Macadamias Mr Craig Brice, for taking the

time out of his busy schedule to come and talk to our Year 12

Business students. Craig explained what it takes to merge, expand

domestically and globally, rebrand and to effectively manage

human resources and finances in a competitive market. We were

also able to get a sneak peak and taste of the new rebranded

product.

LIONS Youth Of The Year quest 2020 Six of our students took part in the Lions Youth of the Year Public Speaking

Competition recently. Representing Bundaberg North Lions Club were

Tyler, Anish, Cade and Emily.

Benjamin and Braydan represented Moore Park Lions Club.

So what exactly is this competition all about? Firstly, the students

participate individually in a 20 min interview with the judges here at

school. Then on the same day at night, the speeches take place. The

students respond to two, two-minute impromptu questions. The topics for the impromptus were:

1. What is your passion?

2. How do you feel about going forward into a future that faces so many global challenges?

Finally, they then deliver their 5 minute prepared speech on a topic of their own choice. The competition was very

close and the judges were extremely impressed. Public speaking can certainly be a daunting task, so we would like you

to congratulate all of these students. However, there could only be three winners announced on the night.

Congratulations to Emily who won the Bundaberg North Lions Club division. Emily delivered an interesting speech on

“Self Licensing”. Congratulations also to Braydan who won the Moore Park Lions Club Division. Braydan delivered a

very moving and personal speech on “The Contamination of Salt Ash”. Both of these students went on to represent

our school at the Zone final being held on Saturday 7th March.

I would also like to congratulate Cade who won the Overall Public Speaking Award on the evening. Cade delivered a

very passionate speech on bullying. We would like to extend our thanks also to the members of the Bundaberg North

and Moore Park Lions Club for once again

facilitating this wonderful and very worthwhile

competition.

Office Notes –

Please help us offer our students the best possible conditions under which to carry out

exams and assessment. We are currently in ‘Disruption Free Periods’ for year 11 and 12

students and this means that we can’t phone through to classrooms and interrupt classes.

To help us with this, please ensure that if you need your student to sign out of school

early or attend an appointment etc, you arrange this with the office before school starts for the day.

You can do this by calling the office, 4130 0222; emailing us on [email protected], by

using QParents or by giving your student a written note to bring to school.

We thank you for your help.

School leaders’ afternoon tea

Emily and Tyler joined others from Bundaberg

schools at a school leaders afternoon tea held by

State Member of Bundaberg, David Batt. They are

great ambassadors for North High and enjoyed the

afternoon meeting and networking with other

student leaders.
