Burnt Out!How Students Become Burnt Out
Life as a student is tough. Out of the many challenges one has to face in life,
being a student is one of the toughest. Studying, paying for rent, paying the bills,
working, and attending class can put a strain on a student. Many students face
economic problems that add to their stresses. Financial problems, a heavy class and
work load, as well as family issues can cause many students to burn out.
Firstly, financial problems can affect students emotionally. For example, if a
student is having serious financial problems and he cannot pay bills, his rent or his
tuition, he might feel hopeless. If he is unable to get a student loan or any other kind of
financial aid, he might feel helpless. A student might have to work more and study less.
Taking hours out of studying to make room for more hours at the job could make a
student feel incompetent; he could feel this way because he cannot keep up with his
coursework. In addition, if those extra hours at work were for a physically demanding
job, he would be even more worn out, and would have even less time to study since he
would have to rest more. This would definitely impact his grades. Moreover, these
feelings of hopelessness, helplessness, and incompetence can put an emotional strain
on a student and burn him out.
Secondly, too much of school and work load can cause a student to feel burned
out. For example, if a student decides that he can handle all his classes as well as his
work schedule, there might not be a problem. However, if he then decides to take more
classes at school, or add more hours at work, without balancing his schedule by taking
hours away from the other, a problem might arise. His load can feel too much, and can
lead to many other problems. He could get fired from his job because he could not
focus, or make it to work on time, or because he missed work completely. His grades
could also be significantly affected. It is said that for each one hour a student attends
class, four hours of studying is required for a passing grade. More hours at work would
amount to fewer hours available to study. If a student loses his job, or starts failing his
courses, he could feel burned out.
Finally, when understanding how students become burned out, it is important to
factor in family issues. If a family member’s health were in critical condition the student
would have to take time off of school to go see that family member. He would have to
deal with all his schoolwork while simultaneously dealing with the stress and turmoil of
the family member’s condition. Furthermore, if a death in the family occurred, the
student would be in even more trauma and stress. He might even have to take a
semester off of school, and work to go deal with the family and funeral. These types of
family issues would absolutely burn out a student.
In conclusion, one must realize that many events can put a strain on a student’s
life. However, when a student is having financial problems, he would not be at ease
since he cannot pay his bills and tuition. Then, to compensate for those financial
problems, when he takes on more hours at work, or more classes at school, life starts to
get hectic. When one factors in family issues, whatever they may be, life gets even more
chaotic. By piling on all these stressful events into a student’s already stressful lifestyle,
students can easily become burned out.
