    INTRODUCTION

India can and should host the Olympics. We are in 2010 right now and a country needs something aroundeight years to host the Games successfully. So even if we give ourselves a time period of 10 years targetingOlympics 2024, we think it should not be a problem.

Ideally too, we can host the Games in 2024 successfully. We have hosted Asian Games in1982, though it wasmany years ago and currently we have hosted the Commonwealth Games 2010. Having said that, we feel thatwe should realize that hosting Olympics is completely a different ball game.

It requires a lot of planning, in terms of infrastructure and also other administrative things. In this area we arenot yet advanced. There are conflicts within various sports bodies and the ministry over petty issues. In theend, it all hampers the quality of the event. We have experienced that during the CWG 2010 preparations. Onething which we would disagree with our sports minister MS Gill is that poverty should not be an issue for us tonot conduct the Games. We can very well afford to host the Games. With all due respect, we dont think thesports minister has been able to envision what hosting the Olympics can do for a country like us, more thananything elses. But to host the Olympics successfully, we need a chief who has the ability (financialknowledge, administrative skills and forward thinking) and the right kind of support to get all the necessarythings together. We need someone like Peter Uberrothtyi under whose leadership and management, the first

privately financed Olympic Games in 1984 resulted in a surplus of nearly $250 million against all odds. Weneed a young and dynamic man who has the experience to work under pressure to conduct big events. Maybe a Kumar Mangalam Birla or ideally a young Ratan Tata would be our pick to be the chief officer to overseethe Games. It provides us with great employment opportunities.

    METHODOLOGY

In view of whether India should host Olympics games in 2024 or not, we tried to use different techniques of

collectioning data like interaction with different people in the society, we have approached to the students in

the KIIT campus to get their views regarding the topic. We also approach to our seniors of MBA II batch to get

their views. Besides that, we even approach to our professors of KSOM to get their valuable feedback

    regarding the topic.

We approach to some of the local people outside the campus of KIIT university like in big bazaar, share a

cup, small shops nearby our university; we also interacted with our parents, relatives and close friends and got

    their views regarding the topic.

Beyond this, we also search through different websites like Google, Wikipedia and got some information and

some relevant issues regarding the topic. We also collect datas through different forums and blogs.

We also made a detailed study of common wealth games and also the Beijing Olympics 2008.

    RESULTS

We have done the detailed analysis of common wealth games 2010 & found the

    following results:

y Indias decision to bid for the commonwealth games 2010 was non-transparent and undemocratic and

cost the country Rs137 crore. India offered US$ 7.2 million to train athletes of all commonwealthnations an offer which allegedly clinched the bid in Indias favor.

y The government of India& Delhi decided to underwrite costs & budget short fall of the games, despite

the fact that the ministry of finance, department of expenditure, government of India, cautioned against

    it in 2003

y The expenditure on sports infrastructure is already 2160% of the initial projected budget

y The increase in the union budget allocation for CWG from the ministry of youth affairs &sports rose by

    6235% from 2005-06 to 2009-10

y Total expenditure on infrastructure, beautification projects & security is unknown but likely to be

    hundred of crore

    y

July 2009 report of the controller & auditor general of India (CAG) raised questions on certain financialaspects of the games, including sponsorships & revenue generation

y Over one lakh families have already been evicted due to CWG related projects 44 more JJ clusters are

to be removed before the games & an estimated 30000-40000 families will be displaced

y Indias expenses for the CWG are likely to create a negative impact financial legacy for nation, the

effects of which are already visible in the form of high cost of living & taxes for Delhi residents

y The games are unlikely to improve sports in India since investment is concentrated on stadiums, which

lie largely unused after the event, as in the lease of the 1982 Asian games

y There is the rampant exploitation of workers CWG construction sites, including low pay, inadequate

living conditions & lack of safety equipments

    7/13

We also did the detailed analysis of Beijing Olympics games 2008 & found the

    following results:

y After winning its 2001 bid to host the Olympic Games, China launched a massive seven-year effort toprepare for the event.

y The huge inflows of investment to support the Olympics and recreate Beijing have had an importantripple effect on economic growth

y Though China has experienced some significant hardships in spring season, the games had been evenmore important to the country than initially expected. The 2008 Olympics was among the mostexpansive ever held, with 16 days of competition from August 8 to 24 in 28 sports inside 37 arenas for

302 gold medals. In addition to Beijing, six other cities will host Olympic events Hong Kong; Qingdao,Shandong; Qinhuangdao, Hubei; Shanghai; Shenyang, Liaoning; and Tianjinmaking the Olympics anational event.

y To prepare for the games, China invested nearly $40 billion in infrastructure alone from 2002 to 2006,

transformed the cityscape of Beijing, made national stars out of PRC Olympic championssuch as

high hurdler Liu Xiang and platform diver Guo Jinglingand created a great sense of excitement and

    anticipation among the public.

y It betrays a flaw typical of old-style Communist thinking, as if the triumphs of state-sponsored

professional athletes were translatable to the accomplishments of an entire society

y Long before the international Diaspora of Tibetans and their supporters made a complete farce of theOlympic torch bearing circuit on world television, the first sign that the Beijing Olympics would fail intheir foremost purpose showcasing China was revealed in Beijing's horrific air pollution and thegovernment's policy for handling it.Smoke-belching coal-fired power plants and factories have eitherbeen relocated or ordered to close for the Olympics. Most construction in booming Beijing has beensuspended as well.

FINDINGS OF COMMON WEALTH GAMES IN 2010

    POSITIVE FINDINGS:

y The Commonwealth Games 2010 was the biggest Commonwealth Games in history. India got goodreturns on the amount of resources and time that India has invested in the Games. One can rightly callit an investment, for the benefits that India can come to gain from the Games are enormous. TheCommonwealth Games hold the promise of great economic returns even after they are over.

y The development and building of the infrastructure in Delhi in preparation for the Games had released alot of money into the economy. The building of sports venues, hotels, flyovers etc have involved manycontractors, construction companies, and daily wage earners. The amount of work that is being doneacross the city is making sure that a lot of jobs are on offer. Even after completion, these projects hadrequired management and maintenance, especially the sports venues, stadiums, and hotels therebygenerating more job openings. To accommodate the tourists expected during the CommonwealthGames numerous small hotels, bed & breakfasts and other hotels are being built to meet therequirements as estimated by the government. The Games, even before officially having started hadgenerated jobs on a large scale.

    NEGATIVE FINDINGS

y Indias expenses for the CWG are likely to create a negative impact financial legacy for nation, the

effects of which are already visible in the form of high cost of living & taxes for Delhi residents

y Indias decision to bid for the commonwealth games 2010 was non-transparent and undemocratic and

cost the country Rs137 crore. India offered US$ 7.2 million to train athletes of all commonwealth

nations an offer which allegedly clinched the bid in Indias favor.

FINDINGS FROM BEIJING OLYMPICS IN CHINA 2008

    POSITIVE FINDINGS:

y To prepare for the games, China invested nearly $40 billion in infrastructure alone from 2002 to 2006,

transformed the cityscape of Beijing, made national stars out of PRC Olympic championssuch as

high hurdler Liu Xiang and platform diver Guo Jinglingand created a great sense of excitement and

y The huge inflows of investment to support the Olympics and recreate Beijing have had an importantripple effect on economic growth

    NEGATIVE FINDINGS:

y Critics said the Olympics showcased how willing China used its authoritarian hand to hide its problemsand intimidate, detain and punish those who might have spoiled their postcard perfect Beijing theyhoped to show the world. They say that the Olympics have moved China backwards, not forwards interms of human rights.

y Construction sites were covered up with billboards, rundown, old-style hutongs were demolished, anddissidents were rounded up and told to stay out of the city or at home. There were few protests but thatwas not seen as an indicator of harmony throughout the country as the Communist Party claimed butinstead as a sign of repression.

y It betrays a flaw typical of old-style Communist thinking, as if the triumphs of state-sponsored

professional athletes were translatable to the accomplishments of an entire society

    DISCUSSION

On the basis of the above recently held common wealth games 2010 & from the comparisons in

contrast to Beijing Olympics 2008 in China & on basis of the methodology made, we can say that

India can host the Olympics game in 2024 for the following reasons:

    y

Presently India is a developing country and if India gets bided for 2024 Olympics games, we would geta gap of 14 years which is a long time span compare to china, so we can easily prepare our self for

    hosting the mega event.

y Development of the country in the sense of hotel, stadiums, sports venues & the people will have job

even after the compellation of the event because for the maintenance of the all the above infrastructure

again people are required, so there are enormous job opening on a large scale.

y India has the potential to create bench marks by organizing the events like Asian games & commonwealth games in 2010. So, it would not be very difficult to host the mega events & more over a countryneeds something around eight years to host the Games successfully. So even if we give ourselves atime period of 10 years, if we are targeting 2024, we think it should not be a problem.

y One thing which we would disagree is that poverty cannot be an issue for us to not conduct theGames. We can very well afford to host the Games. With all due respect, we dont think the sportsminister has been able to envision what hosting the Olympics can do for a country like us.

y India is one of the top medal-earning nations at the Olympics. We would all love to read this headline in

2024, if not before. So, it is possible that a nation obsessed with one sports and with over 90% of

money going to it will rise above its current levels and take off to a yet-undiscovered world of sports.

    CONCLUSION

On the basis of the above discussion made in the executive summary and the highlighted negative and

positive of CWG and Beijing Olympics 2008 we can see that India is one of the top medal nations of the

Olympics. Also CWG mega event in Delhi gave India a fine opportunity to recreate the magic of the 1982 Asian

games held 28 years ago. CWG recalled the magical experience of the Asian games of 1982 involving huge

preparation but in the end we all enjoyed buying and taking home rich experiences and bags full of vuvuzelas.

We also welcome the optimism & jubilant spirit showed in CWG 2010.

India got good returns on the amount of resources and time that India has invested in the Games. The

infrastructure and development of Delhi has also been remarkable due to the organization of CWG which will

again continue if we host Olympics in 2024. Also a good employment was also generated with the preparation

of CWG 2010. Hence on the basis of the above mentioned points we would like to conclude that India should

    host Olympics 2024

    RECOMMENDATIONS

As we have seen that India is one of the top medal-earning nations at the Olympics, therefore

we all would love to read this headline in 2024 again. But also we would like to give a few

recommendations for the future events of 2024 India is planning to undertake which are

    as follows:

y India and Indians have to give sports as much importance as has been given to defense, economic

reforms and IT sectors in the past, and it has borne the fruits as desired. A policy needs to be devised

that makes sports an essential part of school curriculum with equal weight age as other subjects, and a

government supported, public or private-public development plan for sports infrastructure development.

y The facilities must be within common-mans reach, and a world-class coaching system with multiple

facilities that are available for potential top athletes.

y Sports needs to be strengthened at the grassroots, with facilities and support mechanism ready for

those who need it. This will propel interest and competition at the base level, leading to superior

athletes. With right infrastructure, coaching and scientific nutrition plan, the opportunity exists to give all

these people a fighting chance against international opponents.

y We should trained our athletes in the best way ,like they are tested for their performance and

international exposure is a must for them, with a prescribed number of events to participate in. Theexposure will help raise standards within the country and make it possible for Indians to push

    themselves to strive better.

y We must not forget that all that is created needs to be maintained. The sports infrastructure will need to

be maintained so that it is usable through its defined life. It is similar to maintaining our cars so that they

    function, and for long.

All this may not be simple to do overnight, hence to start with the sports bodies needs to have professionals as

office bearers with zero political intervention. Each office bearer across every function as defined in aprofessional organization will also work towards a plan and will be driven by key performance areas and key

result areas. They will be appraised for results produced. Its like a gardener tending and providing enough of

water and nutrition to a sapling so that it provides fruit.

WE WISH INDIA ALL THE LUCK FOR THE FUTURE OLYMPICS OF 2024!!!!!
