10G SFP+ Fiber Uplink Port:10G SFP+ port is an enhanced version of the standard Gigabit SFP port speed, which supports data rates up to 10 gigabits per second. Applies to Managed Switches.

2x2 MIMO:“Multiple-input and multiple-output” (MIMO) is a method for multiplying the capacity of a wireless radio link using multiple transmit and receive antennas to exploit multipath propagation. With different numbers of multiple antennas, MIMO technology can significantly enhance the performance of a single data signal for wireless devices. 2x2 stands for 2 antennas streaming and 2 antennas receiving at same time. Applies to 11n Access Points and 11ac Access Points.

3x3 MIMO:“Multiple-input and multiple-output” (MIMO) is a method for multiplying the capacity of a wireless radio link using multiple transmit and receive antennas to exploit multipath propagation. With different numbers of multiple antennas, MIMO technology can significantly enhance the performance of a single data signal for wireless devices. 3x3 stands for 3 antennas streaming and 3 antennas receiving at same time. Applies to 11ac Access Points.

802.11ac:IEEE 802.11ac standard, also known as “11ac,” is the next-generation Wi-Fi standard providing high-performance throughput up to Gigabit wireless speed and operating solely on the 5 GHz band. Applies to 11ac Access Points.

802.11n:IEEE 802.11n standard, also known as “11n,” is the fourth-generation wireless networking standard that operates at data rates up to 600 Mbit/s. It can operate in the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz frequency bands. Applies to 11n Access Points.

802.1x Supplicant:802.1x authentication is often applied to strictly secure authenticated network devices, such as switch, AP, IP phone, and others on the network. 802.1x authentication involves three parties: a supplicant (client), an authenticator (switch or AP), and an authentication server (RADIUS server). Applies to Smart Switches, Managed Switches, 11n Access Points, and 11ac Access Points.

A

Access Control List (ACL): Access Control List, ACL is a software feature allowing the router, switch, or AP the rights to allow, deny, or audit a trusted network device via a list of access control rules and traffic patterns. Applies to Smart Switches, Managed Switches, 11n Access Points, 11ac Access Points, and VPN Gigabit Routers.

Access Rules: Security features limit access to the network by allowing or denying access by specific services, source interfaces (LAN or WAN), or devices identified by the IP address. Applies to VPN Gigabit Routers.

Auto Voice VLAN: Voice VLAN is part of VLAN functionality, enabling access ports to recognize and carry IP voice traffic from IP phones across the network. Applies to Smart Switches and Managed Switches.

C

Captive Portal (Wi-Fi Hotspot):A software feature is used to service a Wi-Fi hotspot, allowing IT administrators to block wireless clients from accessing the network until user verification has been established. Applies to 11n Access Points and 11ac Access Points.

Clustering:Clustering, or AP Clustering, provides a single point of administration and lets IT administrators view, deploy, configure, and secure a wireless network as a single entity rather than a series of separate wireless AP configurations. Applies to 11ac Access Points.

Command Line Interface (CLI):CLI is a console user interface for interacting with a computer program. Users issue commands to the program in the form of successive lines of text (command lines). Customers and IT administrators typically look for CLI support on high-end network devices (managed switches and high-end routers). Applies to Managed Switches.

D

Denial of Service (DoS) Prevention:One firewall rule is to detect attempts to cause a sever

overload. Denial of Service (DoS) attacks either force the target to reset, consume its resources so that it can no longer provide its intended service, or obstruct the communication media between the intended users and the victim so that they can no longer communicate adequately. Applies to VPN Gigabit Routers.

DHCP Snooping:A security feature that acts like firewall between untrusted network devices and trusted DHCP servers (assigning IP addresses). It helps to validate DHCP messages received from untrusted sources and filter out any invalid messages. This feature is often offered by smart or managed switches. Applies to Smart Switches and Managed Switches.

Dual Band:Dual band is the capability to transmit on two bands simultaneously: 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz. Dual band is helpful in situations where multiple users access the wireless network at one time. Applies to 11n Access Points.

Dual WAN Failover:If the primary WAN port connection fails, the secondary backup WAN port will take over the traffic connection instantly. Applies to VPN Gigabit Routers.

Dual WAN Load Balancing:Load balancing distributes inbound traffic equally to every WAN port to make the best use of available bandwidth. It also can prevent traffic from unequal distribution and congestions. Applies to VPN Gigabit Routers.

Dual WAN Ports:A primary WAN port is up and running at all times, while a secondary WAN port is a backup port. Applies to VPN Gigabit Routers.

E

EEE (IEEE 802.3az):Energy-Efficient Ethernet (EEE) is a set of enhancements to the Ethernet family that reduce power consumption during periods of low data activity. Also known as IEEE 802.3az standard technology to reduce the power required for Ethernet. Applies to Unmanaged Switches, Smart Switches, and Managed Switches.

F

Firewall:Software controls the incoming and outgoing network traffic by analyzing the data packets and determining whether they should be allowed through or not, based on a set of

predetermined rules. Firewall helps to build a bridge between an internal network that is assumed to be secure and trusted, and another network, usually an external (inter) network such as the Internet that is assumed to be unsecure and untrusted. Applies to VPN Gigabit Routers.

G

Gigabit Ethernet Port: Gigabit Ethernet (GbE or 1 GigE) is the Ethernet LAN Port for transmitting Ethernet frames at a rate of one gigabit per second (1,000,000,000 bits per second), or IEEE 802.3 standard. Applies to Unmanaged Switches, Smart Switches, Managed Switches, 11n Access Points, 11ac Access Points, and VPN Gigabit Routers.

I

IGMP Snooping: This software feature allows a network switch to listen in IGMP conversations between network clients and routers and helps to maintain a traffic map of which links IP multicast traffic streams in order to optimize network performances. Applies to Smart Switches and Managed Switches.

IPSec VPN:This is one of the most common VPN methods. It provides secure IP communications by authenticating and encrypting each IP packet of a communication session. Applies to VPN Gigabit Routers.

IPv6:Internet protocol version 6 (IPv6) is the next-generation enhancement of IPv4 addressing, which is essential to the continued health and growth of the Internet. It allows all network devices to talk to each other directly. Applies to Smart Switches, Managed Switches, 11n Access Points, 11ac Access Points, and VPN Gigabit Routers.

L

Layer 2+ Switching:All network devices are communicating and bridging over Layer 2 network standard protocols. A Layer 2 Switch can act as a multiport bridge, allowing traffic in and out based on the network device’s MAC address. LGS300x Smart and LGS500x Managed Switches support full Layer 2 switching functionalities. Applies to Smart Switches and Managed Switches.

Layer 3 Static Routing: In order to route traffic between VLANs, network Layer 3 routed interfaces must be configured. LGS500x Managed Switches support manual configuration and assignment of network routing routes for better traffic efficacy and performance enhancement. Applies to Managed Switches.

M

Multicast:Multicast refers to “one-to-many” or “many-to-many” network traffic distribution. It is also a group communication where network traffic and information are sent and exchanged among a group of destination network devices simultaneously. Applies to Smart Switches and Managed Switches.

O

OpenVPN:OpenVPN is the open-source software application that implements VPN techniques for creating secure point-to-point or site-to-site connections in routed or bridged configurations and remote access facilities via SSL/TLS for key exchange and encryption. OpenVPN is widely adopted today with its flexibility in security and open-source community development effort. Applies to VPN Gigabit Routers.

P

Plug-and-Play: Simply connect any network device (laptop, desktop, AP, IP phone, IP camera, etc.), and the network connection will be up and running without any software configurations. Applies to Unmanaged Switches.

Point-to-Point Tunnel Protocol (PPTP) VPN:PPTP VPN is the oldest legacy VPN method, and is not a great designed preference due to many serious security vulnerabilities found today. Applies to VPN Gigabit Routers.

Power over Ethernet (PoE, PoE+):Power over Ethernet (PoE, also known as IEEE 802.3af standard) delivers DC power and data to powered devices (PDs) over a single standard Ethernet cable, using up to 15.4 watts per Ethernet port. Power over Ethernet Plus (PoE+, also known as IEEE 802.3at standard) is the latest enhancement to deliver twice the power to PDs using up to 30 watts per Ethernet port (AP, IP phone, IP camera, etc.). Applies to Unmanaged Switches, Smart Switches, Managed Switches, 11n Access Points, and 11ac Access Points.

Q

Quality of Service (QoS): The ability to assign different priorities to different applications, users, or data flows, or to guarantee a certain level of performance to a data flow. Applies to Unmanaged Switches, Smart Switches, Managed Switches, and VPN Gigabit Routers.

R

RADIUS Server:The Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service (RADIUS) server is an access control server to manage access to the Internet or internal wired and wireless networks through a set of security rules in authentication and accounting. VLAN (IEEE 802.1q): VLAN, also known as IEEE 802.1q standard, is a software security feature designed to group different network devices together in a common set of requirements, independent of physical location. VLANs help to separate different network devices and traffic communicating to each other based on different VLAN IDs assigned. Applies to Smart Switches, Managed Switches, 11n Access Points, 11ac Access Points, and VPN Gigabit Routers.

VPN:A VPN connection enables two private networks to establish a secure and encrypted connection tunnel across the Internet (public network). It allows remote users to access business intranet resources and information from anywhere, anytime. Two typical VPN deployment cases are Site-to-Site vs. Client-to-Site. Applies to VPN Gigabit Routers.

Site-to-Site connects two fixed locations, such as a company headquarters and a remote branch office.

Client-to-Site connects a mobile user to internal resources, such as when a remote user accesses their company’s internal resources.

WDS Bridging:The Wireless Distribution System (WDS) allows users to build a wireless network expansion using multiple APs without the need for a wired backbone to link them. This network deployment design is meant to simplify the infrastructure by reducing the amount of cabling required. Applies to 11n Access Points and

11ac Access Points.

Web Content and Keyword Filtering:This security feature restricts access to blocks by specific Web URL link or keyword. Applies to VPN Gigabit Routers.

Wi-Fi Multimedia (WMM): Wi-Fi Multimedia (also known as IEEE 802.11e standard), provides basic quality of service (QoS) features for wireless devices. WMM prioritizes traffic according to four Access Categories (ACs): voice, video, best effort, and background. Voice has the highest priority, while background has the least. Applies to 11n Access Points and 11ac Access Points.

Workgroup Bridge:Workgroup Bridge mode can be used as range extender to enable the SSID to provide access to remote or hard-to-reach networks. Applies to 11n Access Points and 11ac Access Points.

WPA/WPA2 Enterprise:Both WPA and WPA2-Enterprise are wireless security encryption with 802.1x authentication methods. These security encryption methods are typically used with a customer-premise RADIUS server setup for greater network security enhancement. Applies to 11n Access Points and 11ac Access Points.
