The Series 200A Sand-Carved® process is made from a hard phenolic ES/MP plastic laminate. This process is themethod of choice for producing tactile and braille characters: the laminate is sand-blasted, removing background material, and raising the characters to 1/32 .̋ The braille and copy characters remain an intrinsic part of the sign and cannot be removed. Other materials available include fiberglass, hardwoods, marble, slate, granite and other man-made materials.

Selection of the type of mounting should be based onthe kind of surface and the degree of permanencerequired. If in doubt, please contact Mohawk.

Mechanical Mounting – MMCombination sheet metal-wood screws, full threaded.Head styles: Pan head; torx and driver; Phillips oval headand Phillips round head screws. Supplied as an extra. All signs over 8˝ x 8˝ are required to have mechanicalmounting to be eligible for warranty.

Vinyl Tape Mounting – VTMScotchmount, double-faced 1/32˝ thickness.Recommended for smooth, non-porous surfaces. Vinyl tape is not suggested for rough or vinyl-covered surfaces and signs over 8˝ x 8 .̋

Silastic Adhesive Mounting – SAMSilastic adhesive is suitable for most surfaces includingsmooth, irregular, porous or vinyl covered. Vinyl foamtape is supplied to hold the sign in place until the silastic has fully cured. Supplied as an extra. Maximum sign size - 8˝ x 8 .̋

Press Lock – PLMPress lock mounting is ideal for changeable directoriesand frame inserts. The 1/16˝ low profile and 1/8˝ “snaphooks” are applied to the back of the sign. Consideredmore durable and secure than the conventional Velcromounting. Supplied as an extra.

Dimensional Mounting – DMA 1/8˝ or 1/4˝ thick backer is furnished where dimen-sion is required or where irregular and difficult surfacesexist. The backer is furnished with concealed holes andscrews and the face plate is supplied with VTM or SAM.Please specify interior or exterior. Supplied as an extra.

Magnetic Tape Mounting - MTMThe 1/16˝ magnetic tape is mounted to the back of the signwhere interchangeability is required from steel surfaces.Mohawk can also provide a thin-steel plate with adhesivetape. Supplied as extra. Maximum sign size 8˝ x 8 .̋

SECTION 10426 – SPECIALTY SIGNS

PART 1 GENERAL

1.01 SECTION INCLUDES

A. Signage

1.02 SUBMITTAL

A. Manufacturers must submit 3 references showing products for projects completed within the last 6 years.

B. Submit manufacturer’s technical data and installation for each type of sign required.

C. Submit shop drawings listing sign size, letterformand letter heights.

D. Submit one full size sample sign of type, style and color specified, including method ofattachment. If approved, the sample will become part of the job.

1.03 SIGN TYPE DESCRIPTION

A. Signage shall consist of room number and roomfunction to meet the requirements of theAmericans with Disabilities Act – 1990 (ADA) and CABO/ANSI A117.1 – 1992.

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.01 MANUFACTURER

A. Provide products from Mohawk Sign Systems,Inc.®

2.02 GRAPHIC PROCESS

A. All signs shall be manufactured using GraphicProcess Series 200A – Sand Carved® usingFormat D.

1. Tactile characters shall be raised the required1/32˝ inches from sign face. Glue-on letters or etched backgrounds are not acceptable.

2. All text shall be accompanied by Grade 2 braille. Braille shall be separated 1/2˝ from thecorresponding raised characters or symbols.Grade 2 braille translation to be provided by signage manufacturer.

3. Perimeter borders shall be 3/8˝. (optional)4. All letters, numbers and/or symbols shall contrast

with their background, either light characters on adark background or dark characters on a lightbackground. Characters and background shallhave a non-glare finish.

B. Plaque material shall be melamine plastic laminate, approximately 1/8˝ thick with contrastingcore color. The melamine shall be non-static, fire-retardant and self-extinguishing. The plasticlaminate will be impervious to most acids, alkalies, alcohol, solvents, abrasives and boiling water.

C. Letterform shall be Gill Sans upper case or other san serif or simple serif letterforms.

D. Size of letters and numbers shall be as follows:1. Room numbers shall be 1˝.2. Lettering for room ID signs shall be 3/4˝.3. Symbol size shall be 4˝.4. Standard Grade 2 braille shall be 1/2˝

below copy.E. Copy position: CC (centered/centered) or as

indicated on drawings.

2.03 SIGN SIZE

A. Room function signs, 2˝ x length as required.B. Classroom signs, will be design M-310-A with

one window or M-310-B with two windows whererequired. Window inserts by owner. Sign size, 6˝ x 6˝.

C. Restroom signs shall be design ADA-4 size 8˝ x 8˝ with a 4˝ accessibility symbol, gendersymbol and the verbal description placeddirectly below followed by Grade 2 braille.

2.04 EXTERIOR WALL SIGNS (At Exterior FrontDoors)

A. Design: M203-9 Black duranodic aluminumframe sign, size 9˝ x 9˝.

B. Insert material, ES Plastic, color as selected.C. Insert shall contain a 4˝ accessibility symbol

with the verbal description, “Entrance” using 1˝ Gill Sans upper case letters directly belowfollowed by Grade 2 braille.

2.05 MOUNTING

A. Signs shall be mounted using vinyl tape forinterior signs and concealed holes and screwsfor the exterior frame sign. The signs shall be mounted 60˝ from the floorto the center of the sign on the latch side. The distance between the door frame and sign should be 2 .̋ Installer/user assumeresponsibility for suitable installation of the signs.
