Individual dimension values can be subdivided further into master data tables. In this way,

master data tables, text tables, hierarchy data tables, and dimension tables, are groued in a star!like formation around one central fact table. "his structure is called an extended star schema. In

an analysis, the data from the smaller tables at the edge of the star schema, is collected togetherfirst, before the corresonding data in the fact table is accessed using the keys.

by the dimension keys. A dimension key is rovided by the system, one er characteristic

combination in a dimension table.



InfoObject is the generic term for all business ob$ects, such as customer, roduct, region, sales,

head count and so on.

business logic.

Info(b$ects are used across the whole B% system )an Info*ource is a collection of

Info(b$ects+.Info(b$ects are either key figures or characteristics.

2ata extraction takes lace in two comonents the 2ata*ource and the Info*ource.2ata*ources include extraction source structures and transfer structures. 2ata is staged in the

extraction source structure and the transfer structure, and transferred into the B% system by ALE or t'3#.

An Info*ource is a set of information that logically belongs together. Info*ources manage

transaction data and master data )attributes, texts, and hierarchies+.Info*ources describe all the information that is available for a business transaction or a tye

of business transaction )for examle, cost center accounting+."ransfer structures suort the transfer of data in a 2ata*ource between a source system andthe *AP B% system to which the source system is connected. "he transfer structure

transorts the 2ata*ource data from a source system to a *AP B% system. "ransfer rules

ass the data on to the Info*ource."he communication structure is indeendent of the source system and is generated from theInfo*ource. It is filled from the transfer structure, according to the transfer rules. "he

communication structure contains all the fields in an Info*ource. "his method of extracting and

transferring cleansed data in the communication structure is called data staging.

Every Info#ube has udate rules that determine how data from the communication structure isstored

in the Info#ube.



"ransfer rules connect a 2ata*ource to an Info*ource. "he logic behind the assignment of

2ata*ource!tye data elements to Info(b$ects in the Info*ource is contained in the transfer rules.

4date rules determine in what form the data from the communication structure is udated in the

Info#ube.

2ata can be maniulated by either set of rules. If you want to have a consistent definition of

data for all Info#ubes, the best way of converting the data into a consistent format is byusing the transfer rules. 4date rules can be used for Info#ube!secific data conversions.





"here are two ways of extracting data

5ou can use I2ocs to load the data into a data target )Info#ube+ directly. If you choose this

method, all of the data is transferred by way of the I2ocs.

Alternatively, you can load the data into the P*A. %ith this method, Info!I2ocs are sent at the

start and end of the extraction rocess, but the data itself is not sent by I2ocs.
