Looking through the course of history, it is very apparent that even the civilizations of long ago have already figured out the importance

of a gymnasium. It is a structure equipped for indoor sports and

designed to hold a large number of people for any kinds of huge gathering.

That purpose still holds true up to this point and it even gets more important especially in the case of schools or universities.

Gymnasium is one of the important support facilities of institutions because almost all school related activities and gatherings have massive need for large and spacious area.

Mindanao University of Science and Technology itself had a gym before, and believe it or not, it accommodated large local and national events like the PBA game.

Students were able to make use of it until its destruction six years ago triggered by a fire.

The sudden tragedy of the MUST gymnasium gave way for its reinvention. The university’s administration may have thought of its essence and importance for the students and the community in general, that was why they quickly responded to the idea of re-constructing it.

It took a while before they finally started the construction, and now after a swift one year, the mighty MUST gymnasium rose again, gaining much attention from the entire community.

It was well designed by the well known architect, Dr. Rey D. Galua, and crafted by the PLD construction.

Renovation is an understatement because modern materials and way of construction was employed; where in the whole old and destructed structure was wrapped and covered with cladding, an astonishing architecture made bolder by its blue and white color combination which makes it the most modern gymnasium in the city.

Its details would give justice to the reputation it now reaps from the community. As you enter the gym, you are welcomed at the lobby where low ceiling is incorporated to contrast the gym’s interior high ceiling to achieve the illusion of huge space.

Above the lobby are some of the university offices such as planning office, procurement, human resource, and general services.

It is also comfort rooms, dug-out with showers for the players, assembly area for the performers, dressing rooms, control room, and spaces for indoor sports below the bleachers.

Catwalks, exposed trusses, and space frames which serve as proscenium wall were exceptionally designed to spice up more the architectural elements on its interior.

It is further accentuated by the porter basketball back board, center-hung electronic score board, remote controlled LCD screen and 3-layer curtain for cultural shows in case of changing

backdrops.Excellent architectural lightings such as

moving heads, par cans, and spotlights, were also engrafted

Indeed no one can stop the architectural prowess of this new structure in the university.

High standard materials were used for the exceptional rise of the new gymnasium.

Foam type thermal insulation was installed below the roof that serves a as heat insulation on one hand and an acoustical material on the other hand.

The passive cooling system was introduced to achieve energy efficiency.

Grade “A“ maple floor system was used similar to SM Mall of Asia Arena, and Madison Square Garden at New York, and other NBA courts at US.

Excellent modern architecture fueled by modern materials and technology are the prime reasons why there are still so much to tell about this development in the university.

This structure which stands proud at the heart of the campus gives the true definition of MUST and provides the most lenient and exact answer to the frequently asked question: Why are they the center of engineering and architecture?

But behold because that does not stop there. The 8-storey engineering complex designed

once again by Dr. Rey D. Galua is yet to make its mark in the city!

MUST’s Gymnasium A Must to Be Proud Of!

HOME CHOICE Planners Construction Corporation takes design and construction into a whole new perspective while maintaining excellent quality construction and planning services since 2006.

Home Choice creates a strong foundation with its clients in delivering on their choice – their home.

Ms. Marjorie Q. Baldo, a resident of Xavier Estates, Cagayan de Oro City, takes us inside her HOME that truly is her CHOICE.

Marjorie visited a friend and saw the solid and intricate details of the home, and asked what firm did the construction

– her friend enthused: HOME CHOICE. “Ako gyud nangutana sa akong friend kung asa sya nagpahimo (I was the one who really asked my friend who did it) – then we looked at the work portfolio of Home Choice… We really liked it, my husband and I decided to go with Home Choice”.

“We already have several houses but I got tired managing and overseeing the construction of those houses, since we bought this lot long time ago we decided it was time to build a home here too…” Marjorie adds.

Subtle colors, intricate details set the mood as we enter Marjorie Baldo’s home, her choice of colors and lighting give us the impression of a very relaxing mood. The dining overhead lighting design shifts from blue to green to red - all perfect for a cozy dinner with the family.

Earth tones and ambient lighting

fills the living room with a breath of

nature, a detail on the ceiling fixture

that resembles the Chinese “yin-yang” a mix of symmetry

and artistry.

The kitchen and bar counter

are creatively and functionally

designed, just right to cook those

sumptous family recipes and maybe

even inspire to concoct new ones.

For Marjorie, lighting design and colors set the tone when

relaxing, especially from a long day’s work - the master bedroom design is easy on the

eyes, perfect for a good night’s rest.

The QuesT for ChangeThe old cliché – “the only thing that is constant is change”, has

become a byword in recent months following the campaign trail of Cagayan de Oro’s mayoral race.

Clearly, the winner is – the Kagay-anons.The people have inked the ballots and made their voices heard, so

what happens now?Almost instantaneously as our new administration stepped into office

July 1, roads were clear, vendors displaced, parking tickets issued, new paint color, city hall experiencing the first wave of protest – just to mention a few.

Change?, – or is it too early to tell? Then again, Misamis Oriental also changed sides – so yes, definitely

we can see changes. These are visible changes – the surfaced visuals we appreciate. In

the next few months people will begin to look deeper into the promises brought up during the election campaign, so let’s keep both eyes open and pray – that our local dads and moms will give us a brighter future ahead, and let’s also become good kids. This works both ways, you know.

A City in BoomThe opening of the new Laguindingan Airport shook the foundations

of trade and commerce in the City of Golden Friendship, like it or not, it’s there – as we saw images of the last flights in and out of the Cagayan de Oro Lumbia Airport, we were filled with mixed emotions and for the people whose livelihood depended on the old airport – tears and anxiety.

That being said – we also see the city now in “building” frenzy, the opening of Centrio Ayala Mall, Seda Hotel, Tune Hotel, the much awaited Hotel Limketkai, and the list goes on with several condominium structures – filling the void perhaps of the loss of the commercial airport.

It means one thing, we are still a tourism destination – and all are focused on keeping it that way. Maybe in the next few years our necks will strain looking up on high-rise towers - that surely is a welcome sight for the business sector.

Food + Instagram = The New ‘Busog’Along with the boom in hotels and condos, we also see a lot of

restaurants and food outlets firing up their stoves and concocting their culinary masterpieces. Homegrown and international brands mix it up in the city of food lovers – need I say more? Kagay-anons are busy “instagramming” food and dining places.

We all have our personal favorite hangout spots for our taste buds – I suggest we all try them dining treats once in a while – para dili kita magali-galihan and by all means – post them on instagram or facebook… life is short – live it.

Passion for his craft—this has what catapulted Coco Martin into the award-winning and most sought-

after actor that he is now. The onset of his career—and his life in general—had been anything but easy with all the twists and turns he encountered. It was a struggle on the way to the limelight, but with his dream and dedication to become an actor, Coco Martin has crossed that boundary from indie to mainstream.

Coco Martin made noise in both the local and international entertainment scene with his compelling portrayal of various roles in indie films. He has taken pride as an actor—a Filipino one at that, as he gained recognition for his craft abroad. “Nakaka-proud na maging Pinoy, na mapakita na kaya nating makipagsabayan,” quips Coco.

Recently though, we saw the playful side of Coco outside of TV series and movies in MyPhone’s latest TV commercial. Coco sings and dances on his TVC as likes after likes marked his post on a photo sharing site to his delight.

Coco’s TVC which features one of MyPhone’s A919 series smartphones, is part of the brand’s campaign to strengthen awareness on its Android line-up. The brand aims to make this mobile technology available to more Filipinos, thus the campaign, plus offerings such as the Android Invasion.

More people can now do the smart move, with the Php 2,000

discount on A919, A848i, and A888. With prices ranging from 3, 990- 5, 990, these Android choices from MyPhone offer much smartphone capabilities to be explored. For Filipinos in particular, mobile karaoke would be much enjoyable with A888’s Karaoke-on-the-go app.

Global Mobile Communication Trends and the Filipino Market

It is perhaps the competitiveness in their respective crafts and taking pride in being Pinoy which MyPhone and this endorser of the brand have in common.

MyPhone is the pioneering Filipino mobile phone brand in the country, offering the first dual-SIM handsets in 2007. Since then, it has taken off to becoming a quality, affordable choice of mobile phones among Filipinos.

Over the years, the line-up of this Filipino mobile phone brand has evolved from the Basic Phones category, to QWERTY, TV, Touch, Wi-Fi, and Smartphones. MyPhone has adapted to the trends in the global mobile communication landscape, offering the Filipino market the latest technology in mobile communication.

“Technology has been changing the

preferences of our consumers. By ensuring that MyPhone is in sync with the global trends, we are able to offer innovation to the local market—at an affordable price,” shares Mr. Kevin Lim Tan, MyPhone Vice President.

MyPhone has been beefing up its smartphone line-up which operates on the Android system, thus ensuring that every Pinoy user’s budget and choice of features are covered.

But at the core of MyPhone is its being a Filipino brand. Thus, with the Philippine map on every back cover, and the Pinoy App which contains prayers, salawikain, and recipes to name a few, every MyPhone user gets a uniquely Filipino mobile experience.
