Natural Habitat

• Rarely sited • main place they are found is high in the mountains of Central Asia others include:• Jmalayan mountains of Tibet• Nepal• India• Bhutan• Pakistan’s Karakorum • Hindu Kush• high mountain ranges of Afghanistan • Mongolia• the People’s Republic of China• Russia • the former Soviet • republics of Kazakhstan• Kyrgyzstan• Tajikistan • Uzbekistan

• Shy• Solitary nature• Active at dawn and dusk• Tend to travel alone• Behavior will change if there is

Why is it endangered?

• Human conflict• Farmers kill them

because they prey on their livestock

• They rely on domestic meat because humans have run their natural prey off

• People hunt them because of their fur and bones for medicine

• There are about 6,000 left in the wild

• work to protect the snow leopard focuses on rural development

• education for sustainable development

• control of the illegal wildlife trade and mining in the area

• eliminate the illegal trade of snow leopard fur, bones and other body parts.
