Make a display of objects and pictures that begin with E.

• Set up a display of adventure stories. Talk to the children about the books you have selected to go on display and why. Make the area inviting so the children want to spend time there looking at books. Refer to Other Books To Try for some ideas of suitable books.

A variation of this is to show the children the items on the tray. After a minute remove the tray. Encourage the children to draw all the things that were on the tray. How many can they remember?

• Create a Daily Diary with the children to record the days exciting events.

Your diary might include photos or illustrations from the children that show what has happened during the day.

Add simple text so that the children can attempt to read the diary independently.

The children will enjoy revisiting prior experiences, which will help build their capacity for remembering.

This is also a lovely way of sharing the children’s experiences with their parents and carers.

Children need exciting things to talk about and interested people to listen.

• Sleep Over Friend

For this activity you will need a cuddly toy that the children can take home for a sleep over. It might be a good idea to have two of the same toy in case one is forgotten or goes missing.

After reading the story talk to the children about Timmy and his best friend Eight. Do the children have special toy friends? Let the children talk about their friends. Introduce the sleep over friend to the children. Have fun thinking of a name together for your new friend. Explain to the children that they are all going to have a turn at taking the friend home for a sleep over so that they can have lots of adventures together.

Pack a small bag for the friend to take with them.

The bag might include pyjamas, a toothbrush and a bedtime story.

Also include a letter for parents explaining that the friend has come home for a sleepover and needs to be returned the next day so that they can share the adventures they had at your house and another child can have a turn.

Encourage the children to share the fun they had with their friend. If the children need prompting you may like to ask some of the following questions:

• Did the friend go to bed on time?

• Did they snore / take all the covers / fall out of bed etc…?

• What did they have for dinner / breakfast?

Make a book for recording their adventures.

Write down the adventures as the child shares with the group. This is a great opportunity to model the writing process. Then let the child illustrate their story.

Enjoying Imaginative Play• Make an Eight to have adventures with. Here are some

ways of making an Eight:

• Create your very own Eight with an old cushion.

Sew on stockings filled with stuffing for the legs.

Attach or draw on eyes, a nose and mouth.

• Blow up a balloon, let children draw on face with permanent markers.

Cut strips of crepe paper for the legs.

Get the children to count out eight crepe paper legs and stick them on with sticky tape.

Observe the children’s play and add appropriate props to extend their ideas and creativity.

• Create an adventure setting with the children.

Revisit the book, paying special attention to the illustrations of Eight having his adventures.

Talk to the children about what adventure they would like to have using the ideas in the book, eg, underwater, jungle, pirate etc…

Involve children in painting background scenes and creating 3D props for them to use in their play.

• Make adventure backpacks for the children to take exploring with them.

What do the children think they would need for an adventure?

Provide the children with recycled materials so they can make items for their backpacks, eg, a torch, telescope, binoculars, map etc…

• Create an adventure setting in the sand tray.• Make a river by digging a hole in the sand and put in

a small dish or tray so that the sand comes up to its edges. Fill the dish with water.

• Add small branches, greenery, jungle animals etc….• Make an Eight by filling a water balloon with flour,

drawing a face with permanent texta and tying ribbons around the knot of the balloon for legs.

Being Creative Through Play • Storm Paintings

Give children yellow or white crayons to draw lightning with.

Paint over the crayon with a black wash to create a stormy scene

• Give children a variety of recycled materials to try and create boats that float.

Make an Eight out of plasticine and pipe cleaners and see if he can float in the boats.

Exploring Our World• Best Friend Day / Week

• Hold a Best Friend Day for the children to bring their favourite stuffed toy for the day. If you have children that don’t attend every day you may want to hold a Best Friend Week so all children can be involved.

• Make invitations with the children inviting their Best Friends for the day.

• Have a picnic outside with the friends.• Go on lots of adventures together.• Ask children to bring ingredients and make a salad to

share for lunch.• Make sure all best friends go home at the end of the

day by making a reminder sign with the children to hang at the door or by their bags.

• Make sure you have some spare ‘best friends’ in case some children forget to bring theirs.

• Set up a painting or drawing area so the children can create portraits of their best friends.Talk to the children about their friends, write down what they say and display it with their artwork.

• Make your own rainmakers.

Cover one end of a cardboard tube with cardboard and seal with strong tape.

Put some seeds, buttons or other small objects into the tube and seal the other end the same way.

Gently turn the stick upside down to make the sound of rain.

Let the children experiment with different length tubes, different objects and different quantities to see what range of sounds they can make.

• Sing the Down In the Jungle memory song.
