Romania’s CavalRyRomania started the war with the Soviet Union with six Cavalry Brigades, based on 12 Rosiori and 6 Cãlãrasi Regiments, while the other 7 Cãlãrasi Regiments were used for the Reconnaissance units of larger formations. Due to their elite nature they were some of the first units to undergo mechanisation. During the course of the war the Romanian Cavalry underwent substantial organisational change, first motorising some units with trucks and motorcycles and then the expansion of the brigades into divisions in 1942.

In 1942 each Cavalry Division had three cavalry regi-ments, two were horse mounted and one was motorised. The Romanian cavalry were skilled mounted infantrymen, whether operating from horseback or from motor transport and fulfilled the roll of elite mobile infantry rather than tra-ditional sabre waving cavalry.

Like most European nations to be involved in the wars of the late 19th Century, the Romanians had learnt the lessons of modern combat and retrained their cavalry as mounted infantry before the First World War.

5th Cãlãrasi Regiment (1941-44)


1942 attached to Third Army reserve, in November it is attached to the II Corps, then to the German XXXXVIII Panzerkorps, and back with the II Corps.

In late December division was asked by Group Hollidt to take over the defence of Chernikov to protect German depots. It defended the position with the 11th Rosiori, 11th Cãlãrasi and some German infantry. The 7th Cavalry Division repulsed all Soviet attacks and was awarded 28 German ’Iron Crosses’. It defended the position until 2 January and was the last large unit to hold defensive lines on the Chir River. Heavily reduced in strength and missing most of it mounts it returned to Romania with just under 5000 men. It was disbanded in March 1943 and its troops merged with the 1st Cavalry Division.

October 1941 to May 1942 with the German Eleventh Army, as part of the Romanian Mountain Corps, before serving with the Germans under the XXX Korps. In August 1942 it was under Group “Mattenklott”, XXXXII Korps, Eleventh Army. In late 1942 to early 1943 it was once again under Romanian command with the VII Corps.

ROMANIAN SPECIAL RULES

peasant aRmyRomania’s huge army was drawn from the rural peasant class, officered by the aristocratic upper class, and disciplined by NCO’s using 18th century style corporal punishment. Men were regularly beaten for minor breaches in regulation and discipline. The separation of men, NCO’s, and officers even went as far as meals that were supplied in three qualities, with officers, naturally, getting the best. The officers were also responsible for the training of their own units. This led to a great variation in the quality of troops’ combat prepared-ness. The distant relationship between the officers and their largely illiterate men combined with the harsh conditions of army life, and sometimes poor training, led to mixed levels of performance and morale in the field.

To reflect the variable quality of the men and officers’ re-lationship and performance, Romanian platoons are rated as Regular or Elite. After deployment, but before the first turn, roll a die for each Romanian platoon and independent Warrior teams. Consult the Peasant Army table to determine their Skill and Motivation ratings. Platoons held in Reserves do not roll until they arrive.

defend the homeland Though the Romanian infantryman may have mixed treat-ment from his officers and NCOs, once in the thick of the fighting he would often fight tenaciously when confronted by the enemy. They were not interested in invading Russia or conquering the world, but to simply fight stubbornly to defend what they already had.

When Romanian platoons test their Motivation to Counterattack in assaults, you may re-roll the die and apply the re-rolled result to all Romanian platoons that failed on the original roll.

fRenCh doCtRineThe Romanian troops are trained in the French doctrine of trench warfare. Their operational plan is to make a short deliberate advance under cover of massed artillery fire, then fortify their position to hold it while the artillery comes up to repeat the process. While the advance is slow, it is sure and will eventually result in the defeat of the enemy.

Once entrenched, Romanian infantry set up crossfire posi-tions for every weapon allowing them to take any attack in enfilade.

Modern cavalry are not the shock arm as they were of days gone by, though they are still more than capable of the odd dashing charge. Now they are like the old fashion dragoons and fight as mounted infantry. They are just as comfortable fighting dismounted as they are on horseback.

They would often hold defensive positions alongside the infantry or, as happened during the fighting in Crimea, be forced to fight on foot because of a lack of horses.

The Romanian cavalry is traditionally divided into the Cãlãrasi and Rosiori, but by WWII any organisational or training differences had disappeared. The 12 Rosiori and six

The cavalry are the elite of the Romanian army. They are mobile, highly trained and motivated. The cavalry proved time and time again some of the toughest troops in the Romanian forces.

Each company comes with ZB53 heavy machine-guns and 60mm mortars to provide the rest of the company with plenty of fire support. These support weapons are mounted so they can keep pace to the cavalry troopers.

The machine-gun troops of the cavalry provide an important role in any battle plan. Being mounted on horse allows them to keep pace with the cavalry, but they must still dismount their ZB53 HMGs to provide fire support.

In March 1943 a tank battalion, equipped with 50 old German T-38 tanks (CKD LT VZ 38 or Panzer 38 (t) tanks), was sent to the front to reinforce the Cavalry Corps and the Mountain Corps in the Kuban region east of Crimea.

It had three companies (51st, 52nd and 53rd) each 15 tanks strong. Five tanks were kept in reserve for replacements as these old tanks had seen a lot of service and were not always reliable. After the retreat from the Taman bridgehead, the battalion was used in the fighting in Crimea in late 1943. It returned to Romania in early in 1944, with only ten tanks still operational.

The hard fighting Vanatori de Munte of the mountain infantry are equipped with rifles and ZB30 light machine-guns. Each company also has supporting ZB53 heavy machine-guns and 60mm mortars.

While fighting in the Crimea the Vanatori de Munte fought with honour alongside their German allies. Their higher levels of moral and training allow them to be more flexible and aggressive on attack or defence.

The mounted scouts provide the reconnaissance for the cavalry divisions. These hand picked mounted troopers are fast and can seek out the enemy’s intentions and uncover his ambushes with expert observation.

The cavalry division were supplied with captured Soviet 120mm mortars and later with Romanian Resita copies. The 120mm mortars are transported in light wagons designed to keep up with the cavalry. The 120mm mortars are easy to setup and can be put into action quickly.

They provide excellent indirect fire capable of knocking out entrenched enemy and the occasional vehicle.

The Romanian air force (Forţele Aeriene Regale ale Romaniei or FARR) used a wide variety of aircraft for bombing and ground attack. Included among these was the German Ju 87D, the first of which arrived with the FARR in 1943. They also began flying Hs 129Bs in August 1943.

Anti-aircraft cover for cavalry in provided by the divisional anti-tank company armed with the 13.2mm Hotchkiss model 1931 anti-aircraft machine-gun. This anti-aircraft machine-gun was mounted on a seated tripod much like the Italian Breda.

There were never enough of the powerful 7.5cm PaK40 anti-tank gun, so the infantry divisions had to make do with the 7.5cm PaK97/38, an old French gun mounted on a PaK38 chassis or captured Russian 7.62cm guns rechambered for German ammunition.

Towed artillery provides a good balance between cost and effectiveness. Because of its mobility, motorised artillery was often repositioned to support Romanian troops during critical attacks and to hold off Soviet breakthroughs.
