Historical Background: The Company started as a partnership between Henry Blundell (1789-1864) and his brother-in-law William Spence (1783-1860) in 1811. William Spence was a sleeping partner, supplying the firm's capital. Colour and paint manufacturing was carried out by the company in the former corn mill on Beverley Road, Hull. Additional premises were acquired in Wincolmlee, Hull. Land was purchased in 1837 in Church Street, Sculcoates, later known as Bankside. The company enjoyed success as an exporter of paints and in the Twentieth Century established subsidiaries in India (C DBBS/8), Australia (C DBBS/9), Chile (C DBBS/10) and South Africa. In the 1950s Blundell, Spence and Company became well known through its brand name ''Pammastic''. In the 1960s the business was divided into decorative and industrial paints and in 1969 the decision was taken to gradually depart the DIY market altogether and concentrate solely on the professional user. Blundell, Spence and Company merged with Permoglaze Ltd in 1960 but the two companies traded separately until 1965 when their trading activities merged.
