Cablefree’s Data Market TrendsNote: Figures are % sales by number of units, not turnover, excluding sales of telecom and voice products
Cablefree
• High Fade Margin required to combat bad weather Rain – low attenuation < 9dB/km Snow – moderate attenuation < 12dB/km Mist – moderate attenuation < 12dB/km Thick fog – high attenuation up to
100dB/km
• System features meet ‘5-nines’ criteria
• Ultra-sensitive APD receivers
• High Quality optics & filtering
• Automatic Transmit Power Control (ATPC)
Cablefree Availability of FSOImportance of Fade Margin for FSO
Cablefree
For 99.999% Reliability: Plan for worst-case local Fog densities
FSO illustration of Fog Densities
No fog – Visibility well over 2km
Light fog – Visibility over 1km
Thick fog – Visibility 400m
Use CableFree’s Link Planning Tools
Cablefree
Cablefree ATPC – how it works
No fog – Visibility well over 2km
Light fog – Visibility over 1km
Thick fog – Visibility 400m
In clear conditions, the CableFree ATPC system automatically reduces output power to a lower level, down to 1/16 of maximum.
Overload of the receiver is avoided even in bright sunny conditions
In moderate conditions, the ATPC controller turns the power up to ensure optimum power received at both ends of the link.
Sophisticated on-board software avoids overload or drop-out
In bad conditions, ATPC can increase the power to maximum output for a given product type.
Note: This means you can install a 4km FSO system say at 600m, to increase availability beyond that which a nominal 1km system could provide
Cablefree
Cablefree ATPC – with & without
CableFree link with ATPC switched off
CableFree link with ATPC
A CableFree link without ATPC enabled, showing significant variations in received signal level (RSSI).
RSSI variations can be caused by weather effects such as fog, heavy rain, snow or dust storms; also thermal effects, bracket movement and long-term drift
A CableFree Link with ATPC enabled in identical conditions shows no variation in received power (RSSI). The controller automatically adjusts the transmitted power levels to ensure optimum signal received at both ends of the link.
Optimum power levels mean minimum Bit-Error-Rate (BER) and reduced risk of overload
Cablefree
FSO Choice of WavelengthAvoid the absorption peaks in the atmosphere
785nm 980nm
Slightly Greater fog penetration
• CableFree avoids absorption caused by water molecules
• There is no ‘magic wavelength’ which avoids fog – but …
• Longer wavelengths allow higher safe output powers
• A properly designed link budget is the most important
Cablefree
FSO Reliability
• Solid-state Peltier cooling for long laser life - MTBF >20yrs• Use of multiple lasers and drivers - protects against possible failure of semiconductor lasers• Housings are water, moisture and rust-proof• System design uses quality components specified for high-reliability telecom systems• Proven track record with over 2000 deployments worldwide
CableFree has a ‘fit-and-forget’ design philosophy. Cooling, Heating & power management ensure reliability in all climates. Management systems provide indication of any degradation
Equipment Reliability
Cablefree
FSO & Laser Safety
• Avoid risk of retinal damage• Output power –
Class 3B not acceptable, 1M is the accepted limit
• Large apertures are safer – Avoid ‘point source’ emission
• Divergent systems are safer – e.g. CableFree 0.5 degree
• Mounting locations – e.g. roof parapets safer than through glass
What are the requirements?
Cablefree
Cablefree FSO performanceQuality Transmit Optics: Circular, Wide beam
CableFree -Circular beam combats X & Y movement
Older product – Narrow Elliptical beam Misaligns in wind, vibration & building movement
10m
1,000m
Wide beam – no need for complex auto-tracking
