By Ana Laura Caruso Heralf staff If you went to Caetano Veloso gig hoping to hear him sing solo with his acoustic guitar, then you sure got a surprise. Veloso and his band Cê rocked the Gran Rex Theatre during their three gigs in Buenos Aires. With a hang glider on stage and the renewed energy from musicians, Veloso offered a magnificent show where he was as radiant as ever. Aged 68, Veloso danced, waved and moved his hips all night long as he sang the tracks from his latest record, Zii e zie, as well as some classic songs from his earlier period. Cê comprises Pedro Sa (electric guitar), Marcelo Callado (drums) and Ricardo Dias Gomes (bass and keyboards). The band started playing with Caetano in 2007. Restless and innovative, Veloso is always looking forward to the future and new sounds. His experiments continue. The audience was thrilled during the concert by Veloso’s delicate vocal work against sparse backing by stark electric guitar lines provided by Cê. The band played the new songs Perdeu, Por quem?, Base de Guantanamo, Tarado, A cor amarela and Falso Leblón. The songs were intimate and surprising, with sudden bursts of electric guitar transforming the easy-going Falso Leblon, and handclaps and funk guitar lines matched against the laid-back vocals on A Cor Amarela. They also played old songs like Maria Bethânia, which he wrote for his sister while on exile in London in 1971. Furthermore, he sang the tango Volver. A screen on the back of the stage showed images of Brasil, Cuba and other places. Veloso moved across the stage and even climbed the stairs on the side of the theatre and touched the hands of his fans. Caetano Veloso was born in Bahia but moved to Rio de Janeiro as a college student in the mid-1960s. Soon after the move, Veloso won a music contest and was signed to his first label. He became one of the founders of Tropicalismo with a group of several other musicians and artists—including his sister Maria Bethânia—in the same period. However, the Brazilian government at the time viewed Veloso’s music and political action as threatening, and he was arrested, along with fellow musician Gilberto Gil, in 1969. The two eventually were exiled from Brazil, and went to London, where they lived for two years. After he moved back to his home country, in 1972, Veloso once again began recording and performing, becoming popular outside of Brazil in the 1980s and 1990s. Veloso has made more than thirty records to date and has developed a massive international following. He has so far won five Latin Grammy Awards. Over the end of the concert, after a round of applause that lasted fifteen minutes, Veloso returned to the stage and sang Desde que o samba e samba and A luz de tieta, while people danced and sang to the tunes. As someone once said, Caetano’s voice is so warm his mouth would melt butter. You don’t need to know Portuguese to understand the words but just experience the joy of listening to his songs backed by this eclectic and awesome rock band.

If you went to Caetano Veloso gig hoping to hear him sing solo with his acoustic guitar, then you sure got a surprise. Veloso and his band Cê rocked the Gran Rex Theatre during their three gigs in Buenos Aires.

With a hang glider on stage and the renewed energy from musicians, Veloso offered a magnificent show where he was as radiant as ever. Aged 68, Veloso danced, waved and moved his hips all night long as he sang the tracks from his latest record, Zii e zie, as well as some classic songs from his earlier period.

MÉXICO.- Con temas dedicados al amor y a los derechos humanos, el cantautor brasileño Caetano Veloso cautivó al público que se dio cita en el Auditorio Nacional, donde también interpretó música mexicana.

El originario de Bahía, Brasil, aprovechó su concierto para promocionar su más reciente material discográfico "Zii e zie" (Tíos y tías), con el que da continuidad a la veta rockera de "Cé".

El artista abrió su recital con "A voz do morto", la cual fue muy celebrada por los presentes.

A esta le siguieron cortes como "Por quem?", "Trem das cores", "Sem cais", "Perdeu", y "Lobão tem razão ", esta última contiene una letra irónica dedicada a Lobao, un rockero brasileño que siempre lo critica en todos los aspectos.

El cantante siguió con su recital, luego de acordarse de un detractor, para dedicarle un tema a su propia hermana, que por título lleva el nombre de ella "Maria Bethânia" y ligarse con letras como "Irene", "Volver", "Aquele frevo axé" y "Tarado ni vocé".

Prácticamente la promoción de "Zii e zie" estuvo en casi todo el concierto, placa musical que hace meses está en el mercado brasileño. Así se escucharon cortes como "Menina da ria", "Lapa" y "A cor amarela", aunque también se dio tiempo para entonar "Cucurrucucú paloma", en versión acústica.

Además interpretó canciones ya conocidas como "Não identificado", "Odeio", "Falso leblon", "Agua" y "Eu sou neguinha".

El cierre del recital fue todavía mucho más coreado por sus seguidores en México, porque se despidió con canciones como: "Incompatibilidad de genios" y "Força estranha".

El legendario músico brasileño, Caetano Veloso ofreció esta noche un recital en el Auditorio Nacional, ocasión en la que el artista rindió un tributo a México al interpretar Cucurrucu Paloma acompañado de su guitarra en una versión acústica.

Visiblemente emocionado, el catautor expresó su alegría de volver al país, ante más de 7 mil personas que se reunieron en el coloso de Reforma para apreciar en vivo a uno de los músicos más emblemáticos de Brasil, tanto que ha sido comparado con el mismísimo Bob Dylan.

Acompañado por su banda, Cê, conformada por Pedro Sá (guitarra), Ricardo Dias (bajo), y Marcelo Callado (batería), Veloso comenzó su recital a las 21 horas con el tema "A voz do morto", en homenaje a Paulinho Da Vida, quien apareció por primera vez en el álbum "Prenda minha".

"Es maravilloso estar en Méxio, no sé explicarlo, es demasiado. . . todo aquí", dijo el músico emocionado a su audiencia.

Al repertorio se suamron las canciones "Por quem?", "Tren das cores", "Zii ezie", "Agua". Esta última oroginal del brasileño Kassin.

Con canciones dedicadas al amor, a los derechos humanos y en homenaje a su tierra, el artista carioca dio una cátedra de su estilo "transrock" relacionado con el trance en el que su banda entra a través de diversos momentos instrumentales, que oscilan entre la dulzura y las notas repetidas como mantras.

En su recital, Veloso también deleitó a su público con piezas como "Falso leblon", "Menina da Ria", "Lapa" y "A cor amarela", en la que demostró un talento nato y una disciplina que lo ha posicionado en un lugar privilegiado dentro de la música mundial, y que incluso le ha merecido el título de "el Pink Floyd brasileño".
