The Cahokia Mounds

Located in the city, the Cahokia people erected one-hundred and twenty large earthen

mounds. Before each mound was created, a ritual took place first dedicating the

grounds to the gods. These mounds encompassed more than two thousand acres.

MONK’S MOUND The largest of these mounds was a tiered pyramid located in the center of the city and

at the peak of the mound the ruling priest lived in a wooden temple. The temple was

approximately105 feet long, 48 feet wide, and stood 50 feet high. The mound itself is

1,000 feet long, 800 feet wide and has four balconies attached to it.

MOUND OF THE RULER

“In one ridgetop mound lying outside the City's palisaded inner core archaeologists

found a burial of a high-ranking male [about 45 years of age] who had been laid on a

blanket of more than 20,000 marine shell disc beads and surrounded by caches of

arrowheads, polished stone artifacts, mica, 4 sacrificed males [with their heads and

hands missing] & a separate mass grave containing 53 females, possibly to serve him

in the next life. Several other mass burials were also uncovered.”
