NEW RULES FOR 2011: The NCAA has established new conduct rules for 2011.Unsportsmanlike conduct penalties will be treated as either live-ball or dead-ball fouls. For exam-ple, if a player makes a taunting gesture to an opponent on the way to scoring a touchdown, theflag would nullify the score and the offending team will be penalized 15 yards from the spot of thefoul. Penalties for dead-ball misconduct (such as after theplayer crosses the goal line) would con-tinue to be assessed on the ensuing kickoff or PAT attempt. Also new is a 10-second rundown ofthe game clock if a team commits a foul that stops the clock in the final minute of either half. Newblocking-below-the-waist standards will enhance player safety. Also penalized will be a play inwhich three defensive players line up shoulder-to-shoulder and move forward on place kicks.

“Tim Walsh brings all of the qualities we were looking for in a head coachfor our football team,” Cal Poly director of athletics Alison Cone said. “He isa quality leader who understands the unique culture at Cal Poly. He knowshow to help young men reach their potential in the classroom, as citizens,

and on the football field. We had several outstanding applicants from which to choose, but I am thrilled wewere able to hire a person with such outstanding credentials to direct our program.”

Walsh replaced Rich Ellerson, the Mustangs’ head football coach for eight seasons. Ellerson left tobecome head coach at Army.

Walsh has compiled a 128-93 record in 20 seasons as a college head coach, including four years atSonoma State (27-14 from 1989-92), 14 more seasons at Portland State (90-68 from 1993-2006) and twoat Cal Poly (11-11 from 2009-10). “My goals are to continue to recruit student-athletes whose goals are to be the best they can be, bothin the class and on the field, and become quality young men,” Walsh said. “If we do that, winning won’t bea problem. This is an opportunity to build a great program and develop a great relationship between thecampus and the community at large.”
