WELCOME TO MALTA FROM THE CEO
Dear Guest,
The Mediterranean is a destination in itself that lures millions of
visitors to its shores. One would think that choosing a destination in a
Mediterranean country where to spend some time, whether for business
or leisure, would be simply based on how much sun, sea and sand one
will find. In the case of Malta, this is simply not so.
Whether one wants to enjoy a break from the usual hectic lifestyle at
home, or whether preparing an incentive trip for business associates,
the discerning traveller will be willing to choose a destination where
his mind can be at ease and at the same time be stimulated by pleasant
experiences. It is indeed for this reason that many choose Malta as their
next destination, whether for business or pleasure. Perusing through this
booklet you shall get to know of a multitude of events that take place in
Malta throughout the year. Malta is a destination where you will want to
join in the fun that goes on, on any given day of the year.
Most of the events are held because the Maltese have a passion for life.
From local and parochial feasts that celebrate their patron saints, or national
festivals, such as carnival, to festivals and sporting events of international
repute, the choice is vast. At any given time, one may be assured of high
quality entertainment for all tastes and different age groups. The variety and
diversity of so many events is difficult to explain in this introduction, but this
is exactly why we have prepared this directory for you, listing 250 events that
will take place throughout the year.
For whichever reason you may want to visit Malta, I augur that you shall
enjoy your stay and return to your home country with happy memories
of a great experience, having spent a good time amongst friendly and
hospitable people.
Wish you a pleasant stay.

FEAST OF ST PAUL’S SHIPWRECKAccording to the Acts of the Apostles, Chapter 27 and 28, in 60AD,St Paul was taken as a prisoner from Jerusalem to Rome. During the journey a storm broke out and the vessel he was travelling on was shipwrecked on the Maltese Islands. St Paul stayed in Malta for three months and it is said that because of this, the earliest Christian community on the islands was established. This event is marked by a feast which is celebrated on February 10 in the Parish Church dedicated to the Shipwreck of St Paul, in Valletta. This feast is also commemorated throughout the Maltese Islands as St Paul is venerated as Malta’s patron saint. This day is still acknowledged, by a public holiday. However, this year the feast day celebrations have been shifted to January 30, due to the carnival celebrations and Ash Wednesday.
THE VALLETTA INTERNATIONAL BAROQUE FESTIVAL - BEATLESGO BAROQUE The chamber group Gli Archi Ensemble has collaborated with great soloists and conductors including Boris Belkin, Gunter Neuhold, George Pehlivanian and Hubert Soudant amongst others. The 11-member ensemble has extensive experience on national and international musical stages and has amassed a very broad high quality repertoire. In 2005 Gli Archi Ensemble recorded Antonio Vivaldi’s Concerto for four violins, strings and harpsichord, within the project “Il Legno Magico” conceived by the violin maker Roberto Regazzi at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo.

05 - 09 FEBRUARY 2016CARNIVALCarnival in Malta is a colourful extravaganza of huge artistic papier-mâché
floats paraded through the streets of Valletta, accompanied by boisterous
brass bands and a cacophony of dancers and revellers in outrageous
costumes. By night the party continues in the clubs and bars of Paceville. In
Nadur, Gozo, carnival takes on a zany and yet macabre mood, with grotesque
masks and satirical floats parading through the streets of the town at night.

VIVANDAVivanda is an international culinary event focused on Euro-Mediterranean gastronomical traditions, cultures and innovations in the world of food and drink.Various culinary challenges take place as local and foreign chefs compete to win prestigious awards under the patronage of the World Association of Chefs Societies.
DISNEY IN CONCERTEnchanted by the emotional storytelling power of Disney’s classical music from ‘Fantasia’, this is a spectacular concert not to be missed. The concert is performed by the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra. Throughout the evening visual clips from Walt Disney’s original films Fantasia (1940) and Fantasia 2000 will be screened to accompany the musical scores.
GOZO CARNIVALThe Nadur carnival is essentially a celebration that owes its great success mainly to the spontaneity of the thousands of costumed participants who turn up on the Saturday evening of carnival. There is practically very little going on in the way of events conducted by an organising committee. Instead, masked revellers dress up in all types of costumes to frolic around with one another as they tease passers-by and at the same time be stared and laughed at. In Nadur one will encounter an incredible variety of funny role-characters wearing bizarre masks and costumes.

occasion. The churches are once again festooned with all their gold, silver and
damask decorations and the statue of the Risen Christ is paraded triumphantly
through the streets of many towns and villages. In some towns, pall-bearers
run with the statue of the Risen Christ. Pious Christians break their Lenten fast
as they celebrate Easter with a rich lunch. Children are presented with Easter
eggs and figolli, almond-filled pastries cut in various shapes.

SPRING EQUINOXThe megalithic temple complex of Mnajdra situated on Malta’s southern coast dates back to 3600BC and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. According to experts, the South Temple of the three temple complex is aligned with the sun’s trajectory in the sky that occurs specifically in the Spring and Autumn equinoxes and the Summer and Winter solstices. Heritage Malta, the agency in charge of administering this prehistoric stone structure, organises a special guided tour at sunrise on 21st March to witness the sun’s rays as these project themselves through the South Temple’s main doorway and light up its main axis.
GOOD FRIDAYIn the morning hours of Good Friday many visit churches to pray and admire the statues that are prepared for the evening procession. These statues are carried shoulder high by pall-bearers in some seventeen parishes. The procession which exits the church takes some three hours to complete. Each contains an average of 8 to 12 statues that represent the various stages of the Passion of the Christ. In between one statue and another a multitude of re-enactors accompany the procession, dressed in period costumes that relate to Biblical or New Testament characters.(For further details please refer to Pg 59).

06 MAY 2016MALTA PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRAL CONCERT SERIES 4Two works by Mozart, composed only two years apart, both written in the
dark, chilling key of D-minor and depicting the composer at his most dramatic.
Two blasting chords announce the beginning of the masterful Don Giovanni
Overture, which provides the perfect canvas for the great piano concerto. The
second half of the evening transports the audience through five movements of
music, in Robert Schuman`s last and arguably most beautiful symphony.

FEAST OF L-IMNARJA (ST PETER AND ST PAUL)Named after the Latin word luminare meaning to light up, this is one of Malta’s oldest feasts dating back to the time of the Knights of St John when the bastions of Mdina were lit up in the night between 28 and 29 June. It is also one of the most important feasts in the island’s festa calendar. Commemorating St Peter and St Paul, the celebration centres around the town of Rabat just outside Mdina. Donkey and horse races are held in the afternoon of 29 June while an agricultural show takes place at Buskett Gardens where traditional dishes are served amid much merriment. In Nadur, Gozo, the festa is celebrated over three days and follows the more traditional village feast with band marches, fireworks and processions with the statue of St Peter and St Paul carried shoulder high through the village streets. This feast day is a public holiday.

BIRGU FESTIVALBordering the southern flank of Grand Harbour, Birgu has a long chequered history. It served as the base of the Order of St John and, for a while, the de facto capital of Malta until Valletta was built. Birgufest is the ideal opportunity to immerse into the city’s rich history with a weekend of historical re-enactments, discounted museum admission fees and a chance to step inside old churches and buildings which are normally not open to the public. At night, the streets are illuminated by candle light and the festival continues with musical concerts, exhibitions and an array of local food.
MDINA GRAND PRIXThe “Silent City” of Mdina is the setting for the annual Mdina Grand Prix, possibly the most elegant car rally in Europe. A rare collection of vintage automobiles is on display in Cathedral Square as part of the Mdina Glass Concours d’Elegance before hitting the 2.2km race track below the bastions of the medieval city.
NOTTE BIANCAThe annual one-night spectacle of music, theatre and the arts lights up the streets of the capital city Valletta. Palaces and museums throw open their doors all night long to host an extensive programme of concerts, visual arts exhibitions, dance and theatre performances. The entertainment is especially evident in the open spaces of Valletta. All events are free. Cafés and restaurants will be open until the early hours after midnight.

GIUSEPPE VERDI: MESSADA REQUIEMThe Messa da Requiem is a musical setting of the Roman Catholic funeral mass, for four soloists, two choirs and orchestra by Giuseppe Verdi. It was composed in memory of Alessandro Manzoni, an Italian poet and novelist whom Verdi admired. It is rarely performed in liturgy, but rather in concert form of around 85-90 minutes in length. Musicologist David Rosen calls it, “probably the most frequently performed major choral work composed since the compilation of Mozart’s Requiem.”
THE SALUTING BATTERYRight from the beginning of the 19th century, up until well into the 20th, the British authorities used to fire the guns daily as a salute, at sunrise at noon and at sunset.
Two Gun Salutes which are carried out by the Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna are held daily, the first at 12:00pm, the second at 04:00pm. Tours of the Saluting Battery are held at 11:00am, 12:05pm and 03:00pm (the tour lasts 25 minutes).

DECEMBER 2016
03 - 07 DECEMBER 2016CHRISTMASThe birth of Christ is known in Maltese as il-Milied and the Maltese look forward to this celebration with great enthusiasm. The streets
of many localities are decorated with festive lights while families get busy with their own decorations in and outside their homes.
On Christmas Eve, members of the Society of Doctrine lead processions of children accompanying a small statue of Baby Jesus in a
Manger through the streets of the town. A small brass band accompanies the procession and children sing Maltese carols such as
Ninni la Tibkix Iżjed (1864), (Sleep, cry no longer) and Ninu Ninu tal-Milied. (Child, Child of Christmas). That night churches are packed
for Midnight Mass where a child is chosen to deliver the sermon. Following Mass, some opt for a Christmas ‘breakfast’ in one of the
cafeterias that remain open during the night.
Apart from the ubiquitous Christmas trees, many families set up their own Christmas Nativity cribs at home. Some of these Nativity
Scenes are rather elaborate and are open to the public. Look out for signs saying “Wirja tal-Presepju” (Crib Display) or even “Presepju
Ħaj” (Live Crib) featuring re-enactors in full period costume.

BETLEHEM F’GĦAJNSIELEMAs from early December up until early January, a ‘Nativity Village’ representing the environs of Bethlehem in the time of Christ’s birth is set up. In this period setting, some 150 re-enactors take part as if they are living in a rural community in Palestine of two millenia ago. Visitors will walk alongside shepherds tending their sheep, artisans working their trade, others who are enjoying themselves in a tavern and farm animals that are either in a pen or roaming about. In this period ‘film’ set, the Nativity Scene is the most prominent as it recalls the birth of Jesus Christ.

CHRISTMAS CRIB EXHIBITIONSThe tradition of crib making in Malta dates back to the early 17th century when Maltese merchants and nobles used to buy Nativity scenes made out of papier-mâché, known as presepji in Maltese, from Naples or Sicily. The Maltese in general love to exhibit cribs in their own home, whether to be admired seen from behind windows or else from outside glass doors. Others opt to go for something bigger and even convert their garage or sitting room into an enormous crib that fills the room for the admiration of invited guests.

FEAST OFST. PAUL’S SHIPWRECK
St Paul is the patron saint of the Maltese Islands and so the feast of this saint is marked as an ‘obligatory feast’ and a bank holiday. The feast is celebrated with great pomp in the church dedicated to the Shipwreck of St Paul, in Valletta. According to the Acts of the Apostles, Chapters 27 and 28, in 60 A.D., St Paul was travelling to Rome from Jerusalem, when the ship he was on ran aground off the coast of Malta. St Paul remained on the island for three months and according to tradition he converted the Maltese to Christianity. There are various other localities on the Maltese islands where this saint is greatly revered. These include Rabat and Ħal Safi in Malta and Marsalforn in Gozo.
58
CARNIVAL ON THE MALTESE ISLANDS
The tradition of the Maltese carnival goes back hundreds of years, with records dating back to the 15th century. The Knights of St John and the Maltese alike always celebrated carnival, as this was an important calendar event that was tied to Ash Wednesday that led to the religious peninential days of Lent.
Nowadays, carnival festivities are enjoyed in various towns and villages in Malta and Gozo. During the carnival period one can experience a lively and jovial mood where the young and not-so-young wear all sorts of fanciful costumes. Many individual carnival floats are driven along the streets of Valletta and Floriana amongst great revelry. Carnival also lends itself to spontaneous merriment, allowing individuals to let their hair down and immerse themselves amongst the masked and costumed revellers thronging the streets.
The Arts Council Malta organises the official carnival festivities that take place in Valletta from the Friday until the Tuesday. In Gozo too carnival is celebrated in various ways, especially in Rabat (Victoria) as well as in the village of Nadur.

GOOD FRIDAY AND EASTER IN MALTA
Easter is the most important feast in the Christian liturgical calendar. The series of religious and traditional manifestations of this commemoration are still very much alive in the Maltese islands. The Friday before Holy Week, the sombre feast of Our Lady of Sorrows is commemorated with hundreds of pious devotees following the procession of the statue through the streets, some barefoot. Holy Week officially begins with Palm Sunday, celebrating Jesus’ triumphal entrance into Jerusalem. On the evening of Maundy Thursday, the Last Supper is commemorated during Mass when twelve persons from the locality take part in the symbolic washing of the feet. After mass, churches are stripped of their silver and damask in sign of mourning and thousands of people traditionally visit seven churches to pay their respects at the Altar of Repose. The incense infused altar is beautifully decorated with white flowers and vetch. That evening many also visit the displays of miniature statues representing the Passion of Christ before His crucifixion.
The next day, Good Friday, is a public holiday. Late in the afternoon, at around 5:30 pm, 19 churches in Malta and Gozo hold Good Friday processions, featuring numerous life
size statues carried by pall bearers. There are also re-enactors who dress up as biblical characters and Roman soldiers. Some participants wear hooded cloaks and drag chains around their feet. Good Friday processions are held inthese towns:Birgu (St Lawrence parish church) – Senglea – Cospicua – Naxxar – Mosta – Ħal Luqa – Rabat (Fransiscan Minors church) – Paola – Valletta (Ta’ Ġieżu church) – Żejtun – Ħal-Qormi (St George’s parish church) and Ħaż-Żebbuġ. In Għargħur and Ħal Għaxaq the procession is held on Palm Sunday instead of on Good Friday. In Gozo four processions are held: Rabat (Victoria) (St George Basilica and The Assumption Cathedral) – Nadur – Xagħra – Żebbuġ.
In contrast to the sombre mood of Good Friday, Easter Sunday’s jubilant celebrations are punctuated by the pealing of joyful bells and fireworks. The feast is known in Maltese as Kristu Rxoxt (the Risen Christ). Following exuberant processions in the streets with the statue of the Risen Christ, families gather to enjoy a rich Easter Sunday lunch of lamb followed by traditional figolli almond pastries.
60
L-IMNARJA(FEAST OF ST. PETER AND ST. PAUL)
Named after the Latin word luminare meaning to light up, this is one of Malta’s oldest feasts dating back to the time of the Knights of St John when the bastions of Mdina used to be lit up in the night between 28 and 29 June. Commemorating St Peter and St Paul, the celebrations centre around the town of Rabat just outside Mdina. Horse races are held in the country lane situated just below the town in the afternoon of 29th June. An agricultural show takes place at Buskett Garden where traditional dishes are served amid much music and merriment. In Nadur, Gozo, the festa is celebrated over three days. Here the feast follows the more traditional pattern with band marches, fireworks and a procession wherein the statue of St Peter and St Paul’s carried shoulder-high.
61
FEAST OF THE ASSUMPTION(SANTA MARIA)
Malta has great reverence towards the Holy Mother. Many churches are dedicated to her under various titles, the most popular being the Assumption of Our Lady which recalls the dogma proclaimed by Pope Pius XII in 1950. This established that the Holy Virgin was received into Heaven, body and soul. This feast which is celebrated on 15th August became an obligatory one in the Catholic world where devotees refrain from any work and dutifully attend Mass. The feast is celebrated with great fervour in seven localities in Malta and Gozo: Mosta, Ħal Għaxaq, Gudja, Mqabba, Qrendi, Ħal-Attard and Rabat in Gozo. The villages of Mġarr (Malta) and Ħad-Dingli celebrate the same feast on the Sunday immediately following that date.
62
VILLAGE FESTA
Malta boasts of more than 80 religious feasts that are celebrated throughout the year. The feasts are held to celebrate once a year the patron saint of the town or village. The celebrations are held both inside the church as well as outside in the streets. All church and street decorations are provided for and set up voluntarily by the parishioners themselves. Besides, many hang from their balconies, light festoons and carpets of damask cloth.
The feast usually lasts three days and nights and is the occasion of merriment for all the village inhabitants as well as those who were born and bred in the same locality but now living elsewhere. Thus it is also a great occasion when relatives get together for a reunion. This is the occasion where one enjoys the noisy petards that are fired in the sky and the colourful fireworks displays that are frequently held in most towns and villages.

MALTA’SNATIONAL DAYS
FREEDOM DAY (31st MARCH)The last of the British troops stationed on the island departed from Malta on this day in 1979, following a final run-down of the British military services. This marked a turning point in modern Maltese history when, following hundreds of years of foreign military occupation, the Maltese islands were now to follow their own destiny without the military presence of a foreign power. Activities commemorating this day are held every year in Vittoriosa (Birgu) where a monument marking this event was erected. In the afternoon, a hotly contested regatta takes place in Grand Harbour, featuring traditional watercraft manned by teams of oarsmen from cities bordering the harbour as well as another team from Birżebbuġa, a locality situated on Malta’s southern coast.
SETTE GIUGNO (7th JUNE) The day commemorates the victims of the 1919 riots when four Maltese men died during a violent demonstration. Many varied sectors of society were in Valletta on that day protesting against various political issues, including the high prices that made living conditions unbearable.
THE OTTO SETTEMBRE (8th SEPTEMBER)This day commemorates the end of the Great Siege of 1565. This siege laid on by the armies of the Ottoman Empire was lifted and the military units embarked on their vessels to return
back to Istanbul. The Order of St John and the Maltese rejoiced at this lucky escape which saw the defeat of the Turkish military might on Malta’s shores. The day is also celebrated for its feast dedicated to the Nativity of Our Lady. It was believed that it was due to the intervention of the Madonna that the siege was endured to a final victory of the Maltese against the gargantuan enemy.
INDEPENDENCE DAY (21st SEPTEMBER)In 1964 Malta obtained its independence from Great Britain. The first of the British administration had commenced in September of 1800 and in 1814 Malta became a British colony. Throughout this long occupation, the island served as a very important naval base as well as a forward station for troops that were needed in case of military intervention in the Mediterranean Sea. After 1964 the Maltese Islands joined the United Nations as an independent state within the Commonwealth.
REPUBLIC DAY (13th DECEMBER)Having become an independent state within the Commonwealth 10 years earlier, Malta became a republic on 13th December 1974, when the supreme judge of the Maltese courts, Sir Anthony Mamo, was appointed Malta’s first President. From now on Malta started to practise its constitutional laws according to the norms of a republican state.

During the re-enactment, of the fort’s garrison - some 55 re-enactors in all -kitted-out in their early 16th century uniforms - perform their military drill to demonstrate to the Grand Bailiff their state of readiness.
