DAVID ESQUER • 8Head Coach • 10th Season

California head baseball coach David Es-quer represents the best in college baseball – fi rst as a player, then as an assistant coach, and now as the leader of the Golden Bears. As a player, Esquer was the starting short-stop on Stanford’s 1987 national champion-ship squad. As an assistant coach, he helped produce six NCAA postseason teams and one World Series participant at Stanford and Pepperdine. And now entering his 10th year as the head coach of Cal, Esquer has led the Bears to NCAA Regionals in 2001 and 2008, was the 2001 Pac-10 Coach of the Year, has had three players selected in the fi rst round of the professional draft and has produced seven All-Americans.

At age 43, Esqu-er has amassed a career record o f 263-236-2 (.527), includ-ing last sea-son when the B e a r s f i n -ished 33-21-2 overall, were r a n k e d

as high as No. 5 nationally in early April, advanced to the NCAA Regional in Long Beach, went 3-1-1 against Bay Area rival Stanford and were 2-0 against eventual national champion Fresno State. Another top year was 2001 when Cal fi nished 34-25 overall and advanced to a NCAA Regional (Baton Rouge, La.) for the fi rst time since 1995. Cal’s 34 wins in 2001 and 2005 (when the Bears arguably deserved to make an NCAA Regional as well) were the most single season victories since 1992 when the Bears placed seventh at the College World Series.

In Esquer’s tenure, Cal has had 45 play-ers sign professional contracts, including right-hander Brandon Morrow, who in 2006 became the highest draft pick in school his-tory when he was the fi fth pick overall by the Seattle Mariners. Esquer also helped develop junior fi rst baseman David Cooper, a fi rst-round pick of the Toronto Blue Jays in 2008, and third baseman Conor Jackson, who in 2003 was drafted in the fi rst round

by the Arizona Diamond-backs.

Last year’s squad featured three of Esquer’s seven All-

Americas – senior second baseman Josh Satin (first-team All-American in Base-ball America, plus two other

All-America honors), Cooper (four different All-America honors)

and right-hander Kevin Miller, a Freshman All-American in Collegiate Baseball. Other All-Americans under Esquer’s guidance in-clude Jackson in 2003, Xavier Nady in 2000, Freshman All-Americans Jeff Kobernus in 2007 and Satin in 2005. Esquer also has had 14 players named fi rst-team All-Pac-10 and numerous others listed as Pac-10 honorable mention. Academically, the Bears had an impressive 12 players named Pac-10 All-Academic in 2004, and last season six Cal players were Pac-10 All-Academic honorees. In 2007, infi elder Brett Munster was a member of ESPN The Magazine’sDistrict 8 All-Academic team.

Esquers’ 2009 squad, featuring junior preseason All-American utility player Blake Smith and Wallace Award candidates Smith and Miller, will be looking to continue their coaches’ winning legacy and advance to a second straight NCAA regional. But, beyond the on-fi eld accomplishments, the Cal men-tor has also been instrumental in securing several improvements at Evans Diamond, including the Carl Van Heuit Training Center, which provides the Bears with new indoor batting cages, bullpens and workout facili-ties.

A huge part of Esquer’s success has been due to his outstanding coaching staff of Dan Hubbs and Jon Zuber, who also boasts an impressive resume of baseball accomplish-ments. Combined with pitching coach Hubbs, a standout pitcher at USC, and hitting coach Zuber, a Cal baseball Hall of Famer, the threesome have been involved in 18 NCAA Regionals, four College World Series and a National Championship as either players or coaches. In 2008, Hubbs’ pitchers set a

school record with 435 strikeouts, while Zu-ber’s hitters were second in the conference with a .302 team average.

Esquer became only the 10th coach in Cal baseball history when he was named head coach of the Bears on June 10, 1999, replacing longtime Cal mentor Bob Milano. Esquer came to Berkeley after serving as the top assistant at Pepperdine from 1996-99. Prior to working at Pepperdine, he was the No. 2 assistant coach at Stanford from 1991-96.

At Pepperdine, Esquer was the program’s chief recruiting coordinator as well as the team’s hitting instructor, infi eld coach and handler of the third base coaching duties. During his three seasons with the Waves, Pepperdine compiled a cumulative record of 112-63 (.640). Esquer has also tutored some of the nation’s top fielding teams. Cal’s 2000 squad was one of the nation’s best with a .974 team fi elding percentage and Pepperdine was ranked in the Top 10 in fi elding percentage his three seasons there. During Esquer’s six-year coaching stint at Stanford the Cardinal compiled a 222-142 (.610) record and advanced to the NCAA Tournament fi ve times, including a trip to the College World Series in 1995.

A shortstop at Stanford from 1984-87, Esquer was a starter on the Cardinal’s 1987 College World Series championship team. He earned all-tournament honors after hitting .350 with six RBI in Omaha. He also earned All-Pac-10 Southern Division honors as a senior, batting .318 with 41 RBI and 16 stolen bases. Esquer went on to play professional baseball for four seasons with the Baltimore Orioles, California Angels and Milwaukee Brewers organizations.

Esquer was a three-sport star and class valedictorian at Palma High School in Sali-

nas, Calif. He was tabbed the “Athlete of the Year” at Palma High School after being named team captain and MVP in baseball, football and basketball.

Esquer earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and a master’s degree in sociol-ogy from Stanford in 1987. His wife, Lynn, is a former professor at Pepperdine in the graduate school of education and psychol-ogy, and a former assistant clinical professor in psychology at Cal. The Esquers reside in Moraga with their daughter, Gabrielle, born July 3, 2002, and son, Xavier, born Decem-ber 22, 2003.

organization with 126 strikeouts in 1994. In 1996, he went a combined 16-1 between AAA Albuquerque (7-1) and La Romana (9-0) of the Dominican winter league, and was named to Baseball America’s Winter League All-Star Team. Hubbs led the Pa-cifi c Coast League in appearances in 1997, taking the mound 62 times in a 144 game season. He fi nished his career with a 27-16 record with nine saves and a 3.75 ERA. In 427 innings, Hubbs struck out 436 while walking only 172.

At USC, Hubbs helped lead the Trojans to the Pac-10 title in 1991 and NCAA Regional appearances in three of his four years (1990, ‘91, ‘93). He fi nished his career at USC with a 19-13 record and a 3.58 ERA. As a senior, Hubbs led the nation in saves with 18 and was tops on the Trojans’ squad with 90 strike-outs and a 2.96 ERA in 76.0 innings.

After the ‘93 season, Hubbs was named first-team All-American by The Sporting News, second-team All-American by Col-legiate Baseball and the College Baseball Writers and third-team All-American by Baseball America. He was also a fi rst-team All-Pac-10 pick and an All-District 8 second team selection. During the 1993 NCAA Cen-tral II Regional in Austin, Texas, Hubbs was selected to the all-tournament team. Against Cal State Fullerton, he earned a save in the fi rst game, striking out fi ve batters in two innings, and pitched 8.0 relief innings in the second game to pick up the win (allowing just one run on four hits and a walk while striking out seven).

On the USC career list Hubbs is third in career saves (22), sixth in career strikeouts per nine innings (9.19), ninth in career ap-pearances (81) and 11th in career strikeouts (254).

Hubbs earned a bachelor’s degree in fi nance from USC in 1993. He and his wife, Alison, reside in Richmond and have two sons, Patrick (eight) and Charlie (six).

ASSISTANT COACHES

JON ZUBER • 9Assistant Coach • Fifth Season

California, 1993

One of the greatest players in California baseball history, Jon Zuber has now es-tablished himself as an outstanding coach. During the 2008 season, Zuber mentored some of the fi nest hitters in Cal history when Josh Satin batted .379 and was selected a fi rst team All-American in Baseball America, while David Cooper batted .359 and was a fi rst round draft pick of the Toronto Blue Jays. Satin and Cooper combined to be named to seven different All-America teams and together hit 37 home runs with 107 RBI. The Golden Bears also fi nished second in the Pac-10 with a .302 team batting average.

In addition, Zuber coached 2009 pre-season All-American Blake Smith, who was the USA National Team’s leading hitter last summer with a .327 average.

Zuber was hired as Cal assistant baseball coach on July 12, 2004, working primarily as the hitting and third base coach. In his fi rst year with the program, Zuber immediately helped Cal vie for a postseason berth and produce two All-Pac-10 hitters (Brennan Boesch and Josh Satin) and a freshman All-American (Satin). In 2008, he saw three of his hitters sign pro contracts, and in 2006 four Bear hitters were drafted in the top eight rounds.

A former major leaguer and a 2003 Califor-nia Hall of Fame inductee, Zuber was named Co-Pac-10 Player of the Year and NCAA East Regional MVP in 1992. He remains Cal’s career leader in hits (291), doubles (61) and putouts (1,299), and ranks among all-time school leaders in runs scored (third, 187), walks (fourth, 137), batting average (sixth, .364) and RBI (sixth, 148). Zuber, who led the Bears to the 1991 NCAA Midwest Regional fi nals and the 1992 College World Series, was also an outstanding pitcher who still ranks seventh in career saves (13) in school history.

DAN HUBBS • 40Assistant Coach • 10th Season

USC, 1993

California pitching coach Dan Hubbs has been an integral part of the Golden Bears’ baseball program since arriving with head coach David Esquer in 2000. Besides being a top recruiter, Hubbs’ pitchers have regularly produced team ERAs among the lowest in the Pac-10 and this past season his hurl-ers set a school record with 435 strikeouts, surpassing his 2001 squad that had 422 strikeouts. He has also helped cultivate some of the greatest pitchers in school his-tory, including right-hander Brandon Morrow, who became the school’s highest draft pick ever when he was the fi fth pick overall by the Seattle Mariners in 2006, and current standout Kevin Miller, who was a Freshman All-American in 2008 and was second in the Pac-10 in ERA (2.90) and opposing batting average (.196).

In 2008, Hubbs had three pitchers drafted – Tyson Ross, a second round pick of the Oakland A’s; Craig Bennigson, a ninth-round pick of the Colorado Rockies and Matt Gor-gen, a 16th round pick of the Tampa Bay Rays. He has also produced Pac-10 save leaders in 2001 (Matt Brown, eight) and 2004 (Jesse Ingram, 10), the school’s career strikeout leader in 2002 (Trevor Hutchinson, 284), and has seen 23 of his pitchers sign professional baseball contracts.

A former standout pitcher at USC, Hubbs, 38, joined Cal after playing for the Trojans from 1990-93, followed by seven-year minor league career with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies. In 1999 he offi cially retired as a player to join the Bears’ coaching staff. Hubbs had previously been the pitching coach of the Yakima Bears (a short-season single A minor league Dodger affi liate in Yakima, Wash.) and assisted Pepperdine during the 1999 season.

Hubbs’ professional career highlights include fi nishing second in the Dodgers’ Dan Hubbs

A three-time fi rst-team All-Pac-10 selec-tion, Zuber was Cal’s batting leader with a .386 average in 1990. He was drafted in the 12th round by the Philadelphia Phillies in 1992 and went on to play fi rst base and outfi eld in the major leagues for the Phillies from 1996-99. In 1993, Zuber set the single-season doubles record, 37, while playing for Clearwater in the Florida State League. He was later selected to play in six Minor League All-Star Games (1993 Single A Florida State League, 1994 Double A Eastern League, 1996-99 Triple A International League) and was named the 1996 Scranton Wilkes-Barre Player of the Year. Zuber also played for the New York Yankees, the Yokahama Baystars in Japan (batting .305 in 2001) and the Milwaukee Brewers, before retiring from professional baseball in 2002.

In 1999, Zuber helped the USA National Team to a silver medal at the PanAm Games, enabling Team USA to qualify for the 2000 Olympic Games. That same year, he was named Franchise Player of the Decade by Scranton Wilkes-Barre of the Triple A Inter-national League.

Most recently, Zuber was the head coach of the Acalanes High School baseball team in Lafayette. In his fi rst season at Acalanes, Zuber turned around a program that had gone 11-12-1 in 2003 to a 21-7 record, the school’s fi rst Diablo Foothill Athletic League title, and a berth in the North Coast Section 2A East Bay championship game. He was named the 2004 Contra Costa Times high school Coach of the Year.

Zuber, 39, earned a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies from Cal in 1993. He and his wife, Shannon, live in Lafayette with their daughters, Madison (eight on March 19) and Tatum (four on February 17). His father, Ed, is the announcer for Cal baseball’s home games.

TONY ARNERICH • 3Volunteer Asst. Coach

Second SeasonTexas Tech, 2001

Entering his second season as a volunteer assistant coach is Tony Arnerich, a former standout catcher at Texas Tech, and profes-sional ballplayer in the Kansas City Royals and Florida Marlins organizations.

Arnerich, 29, has been a huge boost to the Bears’ catching corps as he has extensive experience as both a player and a coach. He has been the head coach of the St. Cloud River Bats of the Northwoods League since 2005, leading his team to the fi rst half title and the league championship in the summer of 2007. Arnerich also served as a part-time assistant coach in 2007 at Sonoma State, where he earned a degree in sociology in June of 2008.

As a player, Arnerich attended Santa Rosa Junior College where he was a two-time, fi rst-team all-league selection and a 2000 fi rst-team Junior College All-American, helping guide his team to the 1999 California Junior College World Series. He then earned a scholarship to Texas Tech, where he was second-team All-Big 12 in 2001, leading the Red Raiders to an NCAA Regional berth while pacing the team with 24 doubles. Dur-ing the summers, Arnerich was a three-time Northwoods League All-Star and was named the league’s MVP in 2001. His number was retired following his 2001 season, and Ar-nerich is now a member of the Northwoods League All-Decade Team.

Arnerich signed with the Kansas City Roy-als after his 2001 summer season, advanc-ing to the Double A level with the Wichita Wranglers during the 2003 and 2004 sea-sons. He then played in the Florida Marlins’ organization from May 2004 through June 2005, advancing to the Double A level with the Carolina Mudcats.

BRETT THOMASStudent Assistant • First Season

Bret t Thomas, a former catcher for the Bears, will assist in all facets of the Cal baseball program this season as a student as-sistant while completing his degree in American studies. Thomas was

a valuable backup catcher for the Bears in 2007 and 2008, helping Cal qualify for the 2008 NCAA Regional in Long Beach. Prior to joining the Bears, he played two years at Diablo Valley College after prepping at Monte Vista High School in Danville under former Cal baseball player Bill Piona.

BRIAN SCHULMANTrainer • Fifth Season

UC Santa Barbara, 2001Brian Schulman is

his fi fth season as the head athletic trainer for the California baseball program. Schulman, 29, already has several years of experience in the athletic training pro-fession, having worked

for the San Francisco 49ers, at Fresno State and UC Santa Barbara, and for the Los An-geles Dodgers. He is also the athletic trainer for the Golden Bears’ 2006 and 2007 national champion men’s water polo program.

Prior to joining the Bears in March of 2004, Schulman was an intern assistant athletic trainer for the San Francisco 49ers from June 2003 through February 2004. He came to the 49ers from Fresno State, where he worked with the football and baseball programs while earning his masters’ degree in exercise phys-iology in 2003. As an undergraduate at UC Santa Barbara, Schulman was a student ath-letic trainer, working with the baseball, men’s basketball and men’s soccer programs. He graduated from UC Santa Barbara in 2001 with degrees in political science, and health and exercise science. Schulman had an internship with the Los Angeles Dodgers in the summer of 2000 and is also a certifi ed strength and conditioning specialist.

A native of Encino, Calif., Schulman and his wife, Megan, reside in Dublin.

This season Schulman will be assisted full time by graduate intern athletic trainer Becky Roark, who attended San Jose State where she played softball as an undergraduate. Roark recently earned her Master’s degree at Azusa Pacifi c where she was the baseball trainer in 2007 and 2008 as the Cougars twice advanced to the NAIA World Series.

CALIFORNIA Golden Bears

2009 SEASON OUTLOOK

Junior Jeff Kobernus owns a .315 career batting average and has swiped 24 bases in two seasons.

Sophomore Kevin Miller earned Freshman All-America honors last season, going 6-1 with a 2.90 ERA.

Last year the California baseball pro-gram got a taste of NCAA Regional competition. Now the Golden Bears are

looking to take an even bigger bite.David Esquer’s 2009 squad has several

key components returning from his 2008 postseason team and these players are de-termined to vie for another regional appear-ance and exceed last year’s results. Among Cal’s top performers will be multi-talented Blake Smith, a Louisville Slugger second-team preseason All-American utility player who was the USA National Team’s leading hitter last summer. Center fi elder Brett Jack-son, a talented left-handed hitter, named the eighth-best prospect out of the Cape Cod League by Baseball America. Right-hander Kevin Miller, a 2008 Freshman All-American and honorable mention All-Pac-10 pick. Jeff Kobernus, a solid all-around player and a 2007 Freshman All-American, and Dylan Tonneson, who developed into the Bears’ everyday catcher last year and was instru-mental in Cal’s 2008 regional run.

“This year’s team has picked up on the positives of last year’s team,” said Esquer, who led the 2008 Bears to a 33-21-2 mark

and the school’s 10th NCAA regional ap-pearance. “Now that we have kicked open the postseason door we are looking to main-tain our momentum. We want to develop a baseline level of high performance that will enable us to get into a regional year in and year out. We are going to have to play well this season after losing some key players, but we are confi dent we have an experienced group of athletes who can do that.”

Sure to be a leader for the Bears is preseason All-American Smith, one of the nation’s most versatile players with his combination of hitting and pitching. Smith, selected to the Wallace Award Watch List as a player of the year candidate, was the USA National (Collegiate) Team’s leading hitter last summer, batting .327 with fi ve doubles, a triple, three home runs and 13 RBI in 20 games. He was also 1-0 with two saves, not giving up an earned run while striking out 11 batters in 9.0 innings for Team USA.

Last spring at Cal, the left-handed hit-ting Smith batted .296 with 11 doubles, two triples, 12 home runs and 43 RBI, while also throwing two runners out at the plate from right fi eld. On the mound, he was 3-0

with a 3.80 ERA with 36 strikeouts in 21.1 innings. Smith was impressive in the NCAA Long Beach Regional as well, hitting a two-run homer to deep center fi eld against Long Beach State.

Jackson will be another showcase player for the Bears after a fi ne 2008 campaign. An honorable mention All-Pac-10 selection last year, he batted .307 with seven doubles, four triples (fourth in the Pac-10), four home runs and 40 RBI, while also leading the team with 12 stolen bases (eighth in the Pac-10). Besides being picked the eighth best pros-pect out of the Cape Cod League, Jackson has been selected the nation’s 13th best player entering this season by The College Baseball Blog.

In 2008, Miller had one of the fi nest fresh-man campaigns in Cal history as he became the school’s fi fth Collegiate Baseball Fresh-man All-American, as well as an honorable mention All-Pac-10 selection. The crafty right-hander, who along with Smith is on the Wallace Award Watch List as a potential player of the year candidate, started his college career by not giving up a run in his fi rst 44.0 innings of action. Utilized as both a starter and a reliever, Miller went on to fi nish 6-1 with 68 strikeouts in 71.1 innings and was second in the conference with 2.90 ERA and a .196 opponent batting average.

CALIFORNIA Golden Bears

Junior Daniel Wolford will be counted on to provide the Golden Bears with quality innings, either as a starter or top closer.

Along with Smith and Jackson, Kobernus is another one of the Bears’ experienced juniors. He was a Freshman All-American in 2007 as an outfi elder, but last season helped shore up Cal’s infi eld as a third baseman and went on to hit .303 with 13 doubles, two triples, three home runs, 27 RBI and 11 stolen bases. Kobernus played well this past summer for Cotuit in the Cape Cod League and enters the upcoming season with a .315 career average for the Bears.

Junior catcher Tonneson was a key ele-ment for Cal last year when he replaced an injured Charlie Cutler behind the plate at the beginning of the season and never relinquished his starting spot. After playing sparingly as a freshman, Tonneson ended up batting .306 in 55 games with 12 doubles, six home runs and 33 RBI as a sophomore, providing the Bears with a consistent power hitter in the middle of the lineup.

Several other players will be counted on by Esquer for successful 2009 campaigns. The Bears feature starting shortstop Michael Brady, steady designated hitter/infielder Rich Gorman, dominant right-hander Daniel Wolford, outfi elders Mark Canha and Ryan Hanlon, left-handers Chris Petrini and Todd Fitzgerald, right-hander Stephen Pistoresiand talented infi elder Brian Guinn, among others.

Senior Brady has been Cal’s starting shortstop since his sophomore season and has shown fl ashes of brilliance in his three years, including a career-high 11-game hit-ting streak and three triples last season. Ju-nior Gorman is a switch hitting infi elder with 43 starts last season, mostly at designated hitter, and fi nished with 12 doubles, four home runs and 20 RBI. Wolford started out last season almost unhittable in his fi rst few outings and ended the year 2-1 with a save and had 43 strikeouts in 38.0 innings.

Sophomore Canha and senior Hanlon will be battling for spots in the Bears’ out-fi eld. Canha batted .270 after seeing ac-tion in 35 games, including hitting a clutch double against UCLA in the regular season fi nal. Hanlon was slowed by an injured left thumb last year, but has had stellar games in the past, including hitting .265 with eight doubles, three home runs and 19 RBI as a sophomore in 2007.

Junior left-hander Petrini is in line to be one of Cal’s starters after going 3-3 last sea-son with eight starts and 29 strikeouts in 37.0 innings, while junior lefty Fitzgerald should be a mainstay out of the Bears’ bullpen after providing some strong innings after transfer-ring from San Jose City College. Sophomore right-hander Pistoresi should also be one of the Bears’ top relievers after sporting a 3.86 ERA in 25.2 innings as a true freshman, and talented switch hitting Guinn is in contention for starting duties in the infi eld after batting

.316 in spot duties as a true freshman.Added to this group of returners is an

impressive class of newcomers who should provide Esquer the nucleus for another top-notched team. The Cal coaching staff is looking forward to seeing how Marcus Semien, Matt Flemer, Danny Oh, Erik Johnson and Eddie Hsieh will fi t into the mix. Infielder Semien and right-handed pitcher/fi rst baseman Flemer are from St. Mary’s High School in Berkeley, Oh is a left-handed outfi elder from Henry M. Jackson High School in Mill Creek, Wash., Johnson

is a right-hander from Los Altos High School and Hsieh is a junior college catcher from San Jose City College.

“Really, what it will take for us to make another regional is the continue improvement of our returners and the development of our newcomers,” said Esquer. “What we need is for our experienced players to spread the production around and be better than they were last year. Our newcomers will help us, but we need our veterans to play well and be team leaders until our younger players adjust to the college game.”

PITCHINGCal has its least amount of experience re-

turning on the mound after Tyson Ross, Matt Gorgen and Craig Bennigson were drafted and signed, and starter Alex Rollin gradu-ated. Still, the Bears return some talented players who in some cases might be adjust-ing their roles from relievers to starters.

Sophomore Kevin Miller should step in and be Cal’s No. 1 starter after his fi ne freshman campaign in which he picked up six victories and was named a fresh-man All-American and honorable mention All-Pac-10 in both a starter and relief role. Another strong weekend starter candidate is freshman right-hander Erik Johnson, a 6-3, 210-pounder from Los Altos High School. Johnson throws in the low 90s and was a

CAL BY POSITIONSthree-time all-state selection, going 9-3 with 113 strikeouts as a senior.

Other starters could include Blake Smith, Chris Petrini, Daniel Wolford and Matt Fle-mer. If Smith is not needed to close games, he has the talent to be a Sunday starter as a power pitcher with a fastball in the 90s and a sharp breaking curveball. Petrini has shown the ability to be a starter as the crafty left-hander pitched 5.2 innings and defeated eventual national champion Fresno State and had a nine strikeout performance against Loyola Marymount.

Wolford could develop into an effective starter as well with a fastball in the 90s and a sharp breaking curveball. He was stellar this past summer in the Cape Cod League where he was 3-1 with a 3.38 ERA and two saves.

Senior Michael Brady returns after starting the past two years as Cal’s everyday shortstop.

.359 career average with 73 RBI at Petaluma High School.

INFIELDThe Bears return the starting left side of

their infi eld with senior Michael Brady at shortstop and junior Jeff Kobernus at third base, but the Cal coaching staff has several options as how to align the infi eld.

At first base, the Bears might convert outfi elders Blake Smith, Mark Canha or freshman lefty Danny Oh to that position. Freshman pitcher Matt Flemer is yet another option at fi rst base after hitting .396 in high school. Smith, who has an outstanding arm from right fi eld, could see action at fi rst base to rest his arm before pitching, while Canha might move to the infi eld to get an additional strong bat into the lineup. Oh is an impres-sive hitter out of the Seattle area where he batted .514 as a senior.

The rest of the infi eld is also up for grabs as the Bears feature three talented infi eld-ers whose fathers are former Cal athletes – sophomore switch hitter Brian Guinn, sophomore left-handed hitter Austin Booker and true freshman Marcus Semien. Plus, junior Rich Gorman is a viable candidate at second base after making spot starts at that position the past two years.

Guinn, whose father, Brian, Sr., is a former Cal standout (1981-83) and professional ball-player, is in strong contention for a starting

Freshman right-hander Flemer could also be in the mix as one of the Bears’ starters. The 6-2, 205-pounder throws in the upper 80s with a curveball, slider and change-up, and was 29-5 during his high school career at St. Mary’s High School in Berkeley.

A key to Cal’s success this season could be the performance of the bullpen. Junior left-hander Todd Fitzgerald, who transferred from San Jose City College last season, has shown the ability to contribute after striking out 84 batters in 74.0 innings as a junior college freshman and then throwing four innings of scoreless ball in a start against eventual national champion Fresno State as a sophomore for the Bears.

Other top relievers should be sophomore right-handers Stephen Pistoresi and Brian Diemer, and junior left-handers Michael Bu-gary and Mike Cassady. Pistoresi lettered last year as a true freshman and had an outstanding game against San Francisco at AT&T Park when he threw 5.0 innings of relief with no runs and four strikeouts. Diemer, a 6-5, 240-pound right-hander, throws in the high 80s and has the skills to be effective out of the bullpen. Bugary is another player with the talent to be an effective reliever, and despite battling injuries during his career, performed well in the fall and will be counted on for increased production. Cassady is a side arm throwing lefty who will be utilized as a spot reliever against left-handed hitters.

Sophomore Yasser Clor could also be a contributor. The hard-throwing right-hander Clor redshirted in 2007 after originally signing with UNLV and did not pitch last season. He was a 15th-round draft pick of the Chicago White Sox out of Wilcox High School in Santa Clara, going 7-0 with a 0.58 ERA as a senior, striking out 95 batters in 60.0 innings. Sean Barber, Joey Donofrio and Dixon Anderson are all freshmen right-handers who redshirted last season and will be look-ing to establish their roles on the pitching staff as well. Freshman right-hander Logan Scott, who was 10-0 with a 0.82 ERA at Junipero Serra High School in San Mateo, will also provide the Bears with depth out of the bullpen.

CATCHINGAlong with Tonneson, the Bears catching

corps will be bolstered by the addition of ju-nior college All-American Eddie Hsieh from San Jose City College. The 6-2, 220-pound Hsieh played well in the fall and comes to Cal after hitting 14 home runs with 53 RBI in junior college, earning fi rst-team All-America honors.

Chad Bunting and Chadd Krist will pro-vide the Bears with depth behind the plate after stellar high school careers. Bunting is a redshirt freshman who batted .413 as a high school senior in Ukiah, while Krist had a

spot somewhere in the middle infi eld after hitting .316 in 38 at-bats with a double and triple last year. He was drafted in the 10th round by the Chicago White Sox out of high school after batting .428 with 17 stolen bases as a senior at Berkeley High School.

Booker, a 5-10, 165-pound left-handed hitting infi elder, is the son of former Cal 1980 All-American and major league shortstop Rod Booker. The younger Booker played well in 16 games last season as a redshirt fresh-man, taking advantage of his opportunities by batting .333 with four RBI in 12 at-bats.

Semien is a 6-0, 175-pounder whose father, Damien, was a wide receiver on the Cal football team from 1990-93. One of the Bears’ leading incoming freshmen, Semien played well in fall practice after excelling at St. Mary’s High School in Berkeley where he was a three-time all-league selection, hitting .371 with fi ve home runs, 27 RBI and 14 stolen bases as a senior.

Additional young infi eld candidates include 5-8, 170-pound sophomore Dwight Tanaka, who could also see action in the outfi eld after competing in eight games for the Bears last year, and Paul Toboni, a 6-2, 185-pound true freshman from St. Ignatius High School in San Francisco who batted .431 with 18 stolen bases as a senior.

OUTFIELDCompetition will be fi erce for playing time

in the Bears’ outfi eld, especially in left fi eld with senior Ryan Hanlon, sophomore Mark Canha and freshman Danny Oh battling for starting duties. Cal does feature returning starters Brett Jackson in center fi eld and Blake Smith in right fi eld, but could adjust outfi eld spots to maximize the number of talented hitters into the line-up.

Other candidates looking to break into the outfield playing rotation are Dwight Tanaka, Maris Moore and Cameron Hart. As mentioned above, Tanaka competed in eight games for Cal, mostly as a pinch run-ner and got a hit in fi ve at-bats. He has the speed and ability to be a viable back up to Jackson in center fi eld.

Moore is a 6-3, 200-pound redshirt fresh-man who sat out last season after recover-ing from left shoulder surgery. He excelled at California High School in San Ramon, where he was teammates with Cal catcher Tonneson, and as a junior he batted .368. Moore should vie for playing time in right fi eld for the Bears when Smith either pitches or plays fi rst base.

An additional outfi eld candidate is true freshman Hart, a 5-9, 185-pounder from Crenshaw High School in Los Angeles. Hart was a member of a championship RBI World Series team in Los Angeles this past summer, and was an MVP and fi rst-team all-league selection in high school.

2008 SEASON IN REVIEW

The 2008 California baseball season has to be considered one of the best campaigns in school history, despite

the Golden Bears falling to San Diego and Long Beach State in the NCAA Regional in Long Beach. Cal was 33-21-2 overall (fourth in the Pac-10 at 12-12), won nine straight games from March 1-15, swept then No. 5-ranked Long Beach State March 28-30 at Evans Diamond and reached a No. 5 national ranking in Baseball America on April 7.

The Bears also captured regular season series over College World Series participant and Bay Area rival Stanford (3-1-1), and went 2-0 against World Series champion Fresno State. Cal won Pac-10 series over NCAA Super Regional participant Arizona and two-time defending national champion Oregon State, and entered the NCAA post-season with a 13-9-1 record against the tournament fi eld.

Behind the impressive team accomplish-ments were some of the best individual performances in school history as well. At the plate, senior second baseman Josh Satin and junior fi rst baseman David Cooper were simply superb all season long.

Satin became the school’s fi rst, fi rst-team All-American in baseball since 1992 when he was named to Baseball America’s fi rst-team All-America squad. Selected in the sixth round by the New York Mets, he was also named an All-American by Rivals.com and Collegiate Baseball. Satin became the fi rst Bear to earn fi rst-team All-America ac-colades since designated hitter Troy Penix in 1992.

Junior first baseman David Cooper earned four All-America honors last spring as he was selected as a second-team All-American by the National Col-legiate Baseball Writers. Cooper, who was drafted in the fi rst round (17th pick overall) by the Toronto Blue Jays, was also named a second-team All-American by Rivals.com and Basebal America. He is the fi rst Cal baseball player in school history to earn four separate All-America honors in a single season.
