Machine Learning to Artificial Intelligence – Basic Concepts and Techniques for Orthopaedic Researchers, Clinicians and SurgeonsOrganizers: Xiaodu Wang, PhD and Melissa Knothe Tate, PhDThe AI and deep / machine learning technologies have been gaining more and more attentions in the biomedical research communities. However, researchers in orthopaedics are a little behind our colleagues. This workshop will address the urgent need of the orthopaedic research community by introducing the basic concepts and techniques of AI and deep /machine learning.

Measuring Skeletal and Implant Arthrokinematics In-vivoOrganizers: Joseph Crisco, PhD and Michael Rainbow, PhDAlthough videoradiography and computed tomography (CT) approaches are being utilized to study biomechanics of the joints and implants, current approaches remain time-consuming and expensive. This workshop is the first step toward the goal of assembling a consortium of investigators to discuss the current challenges and to critique a newly developed open-source software approach to address these challenges.

Applications of Machine Learning from Diagnostics to PrognosticsOrganized by ORS Women’s Leadership ForumOrganizer: Karen Kruger, PhD and Yaxia Zhang, MD, PhDWithin musculoskeletal medicine, machine learning (ML) has proven influential in applications including understanding biomechanics, orthopaedic implant design, and prediction of progression of osteoarthritis. There is a need to understand what problems in medicine might benefit from such learning approaches, identify obstacles to changing the current practice of medicine through statistical learning approaches, and discuss how these might be overcome.

Redefining Hip Dysplasia and Instability Mechanics Using Biomechanical MetricsOrganizers: Geoffrey Ng, PhD and Michael Harris, PhDThe orthopaedic biomechanics community has been committed to examining the pathomechanisms through various multidisciplinary approaches and biomechanics research methods (e.g., in vivo, in silico, in vitro). However, with the large spectrum of methods, it is unclear how we can progress and link each individual approach to validate our results, translate findings, and establish the much-needed biomechanical metrics and testing standards to refine our understanding of hip dysplasia and instability mechanics.

Biomechanics of Forearm InstabilityOrganized by: ORS Women’s Leadership ForumOrganizers: Lauren Vernon, PhD and Francisco Rubio, MDThe interosseous ligament (IOL) is an important soft tissue stabilizer of the forearm and is responsible for resistance to shear stress. This workshop will feature a review of IOL anatomy with a focus on how to improve surgical outcomes through an understanding of IOL biomechanics.

The Role of Portable Ultrasound in Musculoskeletal DiseaseOrganizer: Bart Lubberts, MD, PhDPortable ultrasound technology has the potential to revolutionize access to medical imaging, changing future approaches to diagnosing, monitoring, and treating disease. This workshop is designed to create awareness about the use of portable ultrasound among clinicians, engineers, and scientists as an important first step in new research initiatives using this technology, and in making musculoskeletal medical imaging accessible to everyone.

Exosomes in Musculoskeletal ApplicationsOrganizer: Chunfeng Zhao, MDExosomes, a class of extracellular vesicles that range from 40 – 120 nm in size produced from almost any cell types, has been studied for their highly regenerative potentials. As the novel therapeutics, it is critical to understand the mechanisms of exosome pathways and clinical application potentials in the orthopedic field.

Clinical Applications of Stem CellsOrganized by: South Korea (Guest Nation)Organizers: Jung Ho Park, MD and Tae Joon Cho, MD, PhDThe speakers will discuss Bone, Cartilage and Tendon and Ligament.

Intersection of Fracture Healing and InfectionOrganizers: Josh Wenke, PhD and Chelsea Bahney, PhDOne of the main causes of poor fracture healing is infection. Unfortunately, bone regeneration and infection research are typically approached independently and viewed as two different disciplines. We aim to bring these two groups together to promote research into the basic and translational science that will address the clinical need of delayed fracture healing due to infection.

    SCIENTIFIC WORKSHOPS

  • Designing and Implementing Multi-Centered Clinical Research ProgramsOrganizers: Susan Bukata, MD and Prism Schneider, MD, PhDCurrently, no other society or organization exists that so tightly integrates scientists in multiple fields with research clinicians that can run the translational trials. This workshop aims to provide insight and tools to researchers that will improve translational research design through didactic presentation from clinician and industry scientists with experience in multi-center clinical trials.

Additively Manufactured Implants: Cool Parts, but How Far Have We Advanced on Material Safety and Characterization?Organizers: Alejandro Espinoza, PhD and Mathew T. Mathew, PhDAdditive manufacturing (AM or 3D printing) is a new area with the potential of wide applications in medical devices and implants in orthopedics. This workshop will focus on the various aspects of 3D printing technology including implant safety and characterization and will address the knowledge gap on material characterization and what is possible with newer design and manufacturing methods available today.

Exploring Funding Mechanisms Part 1: Beyond NIH and Exploring Funding Sources Organized by: ORS Women’s Leadership Forum & ORS New Investigator Mentoring CommitteeThis workshop will provide attendees the opportunity to learn about alternative funding opportunities as well as the application and review process. Principal investigators and program officers will present their perspectives on types of funding available as well as the application and review process for alternative funding.

Exploring Funding Mechanisms Part 2: Meet the Program OfficersOrganized by: ORS Women’s Leadership Forum & ORS New Investigator Mentoring CommitteeThis session will provide attendees an opportunity to better understand funding policies of the agencies represented in Part 1, as well as the NIH, through one-on-one personal interaction with program staff.

Building Your Research PortfolioOrganized by: ORS New Investigator Mentoring CommitteeThis session covers the management of research directions at various career stages: from transitioning your postdoctoral work into an independent laboratory as an early investigator to expanding project boundaries as an established investigator.

WLF + DEI Luncheon – Inclusion of Gender and Ethnic Diversity Promotes Scientific Progress: The Rosalind Franklin Paradox Organized by: ORS Women’s Leadership Forum & ORS Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion CommitteeInclusion and acceptance of gender and ethnic diversity promotes progress. We will debate these complex topics and provide a new lens with which to view the research process.

Mastering Research Finances for Career Advancement in AcademiaOrganized by: ORS New Investigator Mentoring CommitteeThis session will cover topics related to budgeting and resource management for early stage principal investigators. Particularly, the session will be focused on strategies to leverage available financial resources to grow your research program and to advance your career towards becoming a financially independent established investigator.

Imposter Syndrome: It’s Not Just You!!!Organized by: ORS Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee & ORS New Investigator Mentoring CommitteeSpeakers will discuss the causes and effects of imposter syndrome as well as methods for managing these feelings. Opportunities for institutions to improve external support for trainees and faculty will also be presented. Established investigators within the musculoskeletal research community will also share their experiences with imposter syndrome and provide advice on perseverance.
