Corridors are punctuated by colorful front porches that serve as flexible small-group learning spaces. The third floor features an art classroom and fabrication lab that opens onto a large rooftop classroom, helping foster connections to the local environment. The ef-ficient design maximizes use of the small site to meet the needs of students and staff and provide a safe space that encourages a sense of community connection. n

“This project exemplifies how to make the most of a renovation and expansion: improve site conditions, expand space for social connection, and enhance learning opportunities spatially and technologically. The addition elegantly engages the site.” —2019 JURY

The health technologies program at Lake-land Community College (LCC) is highly regarded in the region. LCC determined that it needed to expand its offerings

to better support healthcare providers in the region. This need led to the creation of a new facility that gives the campus a new identity and sense of place.

The Health Technologies Center underwent a renovation of the existing 52,000-square-foot building and constructed an additional 80,000 square feet of space. The relationship between the bars of the new building and the existing

building create a three-story skylighted atrium that has become the new heart of the campus.

Further, the massing of the building and connected site work together to create an iconic new image that is visible from the main street. The building is seeking a LEED Gold certification rating and is designed to be “Net-Zero Ready.”

Even though the project has added 80,000 square feet of programmable space, the facil-ity is so energy efficient that the total campus utility consumption is projected to decrease by 0.8%. n

CITATION POST-SECONDARY

“Light and airy, with multilevel connections designed to inspire.” —2019 JURY

Inspired by the gracefulness of birds in flight, the student union building at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is an expression of its mission to teach the

science, practice and business of aviation and aerospace. Situated at the front door to the campus, the building’s gently soaring form expresses flight and creates an iconic identity. The facility embodies students’ values of fear-lessness, adventure and discovery.

Internally, the student union building is an aeronautical athenaeum that combines social learning spaces, events, dining and the university library. A soaring, triple-height

commons anchors and integrates the collab-orative social and learning interiors. Wrapping this space and open to it are lounges, dining venues, group study rooms, clubs and orga-nizations, career services and the university library as well as an event center, creating a virtual “city within a city.” n

STEVENSON ELEMENTARYBELLEVUE, WASHINGTON

Stevenson Elementary is a new K- 5 elementary school in an urban setting in Bellevue, Wash. It has a family con-nections center in partnership with

the city of Bellevue and a dedicated wing for an Early Learning Program (ELP). In the 2017-18 school year, 58% of Stevenson students spoke one of 32 languages other than English as their first language. This multicultural background was not addressed well in the existing building., and it became clear that the new facility would need a place to build community. Also, the school staff needed a flexible layout because of population fluctuations that shift the num-ber of classrooms per grade. This led to the development of a simple school arrangement with three functional bars integrated around a cultural center.

The south public bar contains the gym, administration, and ELP functions shielding the north classroom bar from the promenade leading to the school entry. The center bar is composed of three courtyards, one internal and two opening out to the site, with outdoor play and learning spaces flanking the Cultural Center. This started as a conceptual term that solidified into a real space for the community to come together at the heart of the school.

The Cultural Center is embraced by the art, music, STEM, and family connections spaces on the first floor and a learning resource center and specialist instruction spaces on the second floor. This multifunctional space is used during and after hours for collabora-tion, celebration, and community outreach. The internal courtyard connects the Cultural Center to the classroom wing through a set of portals that complete the series beginning at the promenade. n

OUTSTANDING DESIGN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

“SMA designed learning spaces that not only meet our teaching and learning needs, but also reflect the culture of the diverse community at Stevenson. Our Cultural Center is bright and vibrant and creates an opportunity for students and families to create community.” —ANISSA BASHEY, PRINCIPAL, STEVENSON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
