The Nicene Creed Congregation standing

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, ofall that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten ofthe Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the HolySpirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sakehe was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On thethird day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in gloryto judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from theFather and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped andglorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholicand apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Prayers of the PeopleIntercessor Living God, in your mercy,People hear our prayer.

Confession and AbsolutionCELEBRANT AND PEOPLE: God of all mercy, we confess that we have sinned against you, opposing your will in our lives. We have denied your goodness in each other, in ourselves, and in the world you have created. We repent of the evil that enslaves us, the evil we have done, and the evil done on our behalf. Forgive, restore, and strengthen us through our Savior Jesus Christ, that we may abide in your love and serve only your will. Amen.

The PeaceCELEBRANT: The peace of the Lord be always with you.PEOPLE: And also with you.

All may greet one another.

The Holy CommunionCELEBRANT: The Lord be with you.PEOPLE: And also with you.CELEBRANT: Lift up your hearts.PEOPLE: We lift them to the Lord.CELEBRANT: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.PEOPLE: It is right to give God thanks and praise.CELEBRANT: We praise you and we bless you, holy and gracious God, source of life

abundant. From before time you made ready the creation. Your Spirit movedover the deep and brought all things into being: sun, moon, and stars; earth, winds, and waters; and every living thing. You made us in your image, andtaught us to walk in your ways. But we rebelled against you, and wandered faraway; and yet, as a mother cares for her children, you would not forget us. Time and again you called us to live in the fullness of your love. And so this daywe join with Saints and Angels in the chorus of praise that rings through eternity, lifting our voices to magnify you as we say:

CELEBRANT AND PEOPLE:Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of yourglory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

The Celebrant continuesGlory and honor and praise to you, holy and living God. To deliver us from thepower of sin and death and to reveal the riches of your grace, you looked withfavor upon Mary, your willing servant, that she might conceive and bear a son,Jesus the holy child of God. Living among us, Jesus loved us. He broke breadwith outcasts and sinners, healed the sick, and proclaimed good news to thepoor. He yearned to draw all the world to himself yet we were heedless of hiscall to walk in love. Then, the time came for him to complete upon the cross thesacrifice of his life, and to be glorified by you.

On the night before he died for us, Jesus was at table with his friends. He tookbread, gave thanks to you, broke it, and gave it to them, and said: “Take, eat:This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine. Again, he gave thanks to you, gave it to them, and said: “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the newCovenant, which is poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins.Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Now gathered atyour table, O God of all creation, and remembering Christ, crucified and risen, who was and is and is to come, we offer to you our gifts of bread and wine, andourselves, a living sacrifice.

Pour out your Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Body and Blood ofChrist. Breathe your Spirit over the whole earth and make us your new creation, the Body of Christ given for the world you have made. In the fullness of timebring us, with [___________ and] all your saints, from every tribe and language and people and nation, to feast at the banquet prepared from the foundation of the world.

Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,to you be honor, glory, and praise, for ever and ever. AMEN.

MUSICAL NOTES

The American organist and composer David N. Johnson (1922-87) taught successively at Syracuse University, St. Olaf College, and the University ofArizona; he composed the attractive tune of today’s opening hymn, which won a national hymntune-writing competition in 1982, and his Trumpet Tunein D is a popular modern contribution to this small but popular category oforgan-composition.

Bike Rack Anyone? It has been brought to our attention by both parishioners and visitors that it would benice if Calvary had a few bike racks that could be used to secure bikes. Currently bikesare placed against and sometimes locked up to the railing that separates the parking lotand sidewalk. The man who made the iron rod locks that are used on the doors in theNarthex said he could develop a circular bike rack that could be attached to the existingparking lot railing. The cost would be $185 per rack, of which we need four. We havereceived a donation to cover the cost of one of them, and we are looking for a fewcycling enthusiasts who could help offset the cost of the other three.

Rosie: By Any Other Name – The Riveting True Story of the Labor IconCertainly, one of the more readily recognizable icons of labor is “Rosie the Riveter,” the indefatigable World War II-era woman who rolled up her sleeves, flexed her arm muscles and said, “We Can Do It!” But, this isn’t the original Rosie.

In 1942, as World War II raged in Europe and the Pacific and the song “Rosie the Riveter” filled radio waves across the home front, manufacturing giant Westinghouse commissioned artist J. Howard Miller to make a series of posters to promote the war effort. One such poster featured the image of a woman with her hair wrapped up in a red polka-dot scarf, rolling up her sleeve and flexing her bicep. At the top of the poster, the words ‘We Can Do It!’ are printed in a blue caption bubble. To many people, this image is “the” Rosie the Riveter. But it wasnever the intention to make this image “Rosie,” nor did many Americans think of her as “Rosie.” The connection of Miller’s image and “Rosie” is a recent phenomenon.

The “Rosie” image popular during the war was created by illustrator Norman Rockwell(who had most certainly heard the “Rosie the Riveter” song) for the cover of theSaturday Evening Post on May 29, 1943 — the Memorial Day issue. The image depicts amuscular woman wearing overalls, goggles and pins of honor on her lapel. She sports aleather wrist band and rolled-up sleeves. She sits with a riveting tool in her lap, eating asandwich, and “Rosie” is inscribed on her lunch pail. And, she’s stepping on a copy ofAdolph Hitler’s book “Mein Kampf.”

The magazine cover exemplified the American can-do spirit and illustrated the notionof women working in previously male-dominated manufacturing jobs, an ever-growingreality, to help the United States fight the war while the men fought over seas.

The cover was an enormous success and soon stories about real life “Rosies” beganappearing in newspapers across the country. The government took advantage of thepopularity of Rosie the Riveter and embarked on a recruiting campaign of the samename. The campaign brought millions of women out of the home and into the work-force. To this day, Rosie the Riveter is still considered the most successful governmentadvertising campaign in history.

After the war, numerous requests were made for the Saturday Evening Post image ofRosie the Riveter, but Curtis Publishing, the owner of the Post, refused all requests. Thepublishing company was possibly concerned that the composers of the song “Rosie theRiveter” would hold them liable for copyright infringement.

Since then, the J. Howard Miller “We Can Do It!” image has replaced Norman Rockwell’s illustration as “Rosie the Riveter” in the minds of many people. Miller’s Rosie has been imprinted on coffee mugs, mouse pads, and countless other items, making her and not the original “Rosie” the most famous of all labor icons.

Prayers for HealingPrayer for healing has long been significant in the life of Calvary Church. At the invitation of Calvary’s rector John Baiz, Emily Gardner Neal began a decade of healingministry here in 1966, and healing services have continued since then. The Book ofCommon Prayer (page 455) provides for ministry to the sick, including prayer, layingon of hands, and anointing. Prayers for healing will resume being offered at the 11 a.m.Eucharist on September 7. After they have received Communion, those wishing toreceive the laying on of hands may come to the altar rail in the Lady Chapel, where oneof the clergy will pray for them. We invite all who seek healing of body, mind, or spiritto come for this sacramental sign of God’s grace and Christ’s healing presence.

Seminarian to Join CalvaryMr. Shane Siciliano will join us as Seminarian at Calvary beginning in September and will continue through May, 2015. Shane will experience an unpaid internship learning about all aspects of life at Calvary as part of his preparation for ordination. This is somewhat similar to a McNulty Intern but will take place over the course of an academic year rather than the summer and is on a part-time basis, about ten to twelve hours per week.

Shane is a student at the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and expects to be graduated in 2017 with a joint Master of Divinity from PTS and a Master of Social Work from the University of Pittsburgh. He also has spent part of his preparatory process at St. Peter’s in Brentwood and Trinity Cathedral. He just returned from a mission trip to South Africa and Lesotho(see photo).

At Calvary, Shane will assist with worship, pastoral care, and Christian formation. He will also learn about administration, priestly identity, and the day to day life in a parish. After reception of his academic degrees, he hopes to be ordained as a deaconand then priest to serve in the Episcopal Church.

Please welcome Shane to the Calvary community.

Twelfth Sunday after PentecostAugust 31, 2014 Proper 17A

THE COLLECT OF THE DAY

Lord of all power and might, the author and giver of all good things:Graft in our hearts the love of your Name; increase in us true religion;nourish us with all goodness; and bring forth in us the fruit of good works; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns withyou and the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen.

A Reading from the Book of Jeremiah [15:15-21]

O Lord, you know; remember me and visit me, and bring down retribution for me on my persecutors. In your forbearance do not take meaway; know that on your account I suffer insult. Your words were found, and I ate them, and your words became to me a joy and the delight of myheart; for I am called by your name, O Lord, God of hosts. I did not sitin the company of merrymakers, nor did I rejoice; under the weight ofyour hand I sat alone, for you had filled me with indignation. Why is mypain unceasing, my wound incurable, refusing to be healed? Truly, youare to me like a deceitful brook, like waters that fail. Therefore thus saysthe Lord: “If you turn back, I will take you back, and you shall standbefore me. If you utter what is precious, and not what is worthless, youshall serve as my mouth. It is they who will turn to you, not you whowill turn to them. And I will make you to this people a fortified wall ofbronze; they will fight against you, but they shall not prevail over you,for I am with you to save you and deliver you,” says the Lord. “I willdeliver you out of the hand of the wicked, and redeem you from the graspof the ruthless.”

Reader: The Word of the Lord.Congregation: Thanks be to God.

Psalm 26:1-81 Give judgment for me, O Lord, for I have lived with integrity; *

I have trusted in the Lord and have not faltered.2 Test me, O Lord, and try me; *

examine my heart and my mind.3 For your love is before my eyes; *

I have walked faithfully with you.4 I have not sat with the worthless, *

nor do I consort with the deceitful.5 I have hated the company of evildoers; *

I will not sit down with the wicked.6 I will wash my hands in innocence, O Lord, *

that I may go in procession round your altar,7 Singing aloud a song of thanksgiving *

and recounting all your wonderful deeds.8 Lord, I love the house in which you dwell *

and the place where your glory abides.Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

A Reading from the Letter of Paul to the Romans [12:9-21]

Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love oneanother with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honor. Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. Contribute to the needs of thesaints; extend hospitality to strangers. Bless those who persecute you;bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep withthose who weep. Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; do not claim to be wiser than you are. Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble inthe sight of all. If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceablywith all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave room for the wrathof God; for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.”No, “if your enemies are hungry, feed them; if they are thirsty, give themsomething to drink; for by doing this you will heap burning coals ontheir heads.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

The Holy Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ According to Matthew

[16:21-28]

Response before the Gospel: Glory to you, Lord Christ.Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and undergo great suffering at the hands of the elders and chief priests andscribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. And Peter took himaside and began to rebuke him, saying, “God forbid it, Lord! This mustnever happen to you.” But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me,Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; for you are setting your mind noton divine things but on human things.” Then Jesus told his disciples, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and takeup their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life willlose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit them if they gain the whole world but forfeit their life? Or what will they give in return for their life? For the Son of Man is tocome with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repayeveryone for what has been done. Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the Son of Mancoming in his kingdom.”

Response after the Gospel: Praise to you, Lord Christ.
