CALYPSO MUSIC FROM THE CARIBBEAN Originally the na=onal dance of Trinidad and Tobago, calypso is par=cularly associated with carnival. Instruments for a Calypso band – trumpet, saxophone electric guitar, drum kit and La=n percussion including steel pans Calypso music is a fusion of African and European influences African - call and response, off-beat or syncopated beats European - verse and chorus structure, simple chords A Calypso rhythm: Caribbean music is made up of several different genres including reggae, salsa and calypso. Calypso was popular in the 1930s The Caribbean islands lie in a chain from the Bahamas in the north to Trinidad and Tobago in the south. Most of the Caribbean popula=on are descendants of West African slaves and seWlers from Europe STEEL PANS Tuned percussion instruments of various sizes Divided into different sec=ons which are tuned to different pitches Small ”tenor” pans play the melody, medium “cello” and “guitar” pans play the harmony and the large “bass” accompany the whole ensemble Legend tells of a boy who found an old oil drum washed up on the beach. He made it into a drum, but when he lent it to a friend, it came back not sounding good.
