What is Cambridge Secondary?

Application Due Date

Student Eligibility and Application Process for Cambridge Secondary Cambridge Secondary Teachers

Cambridge Secondary is an advanced studies program for middle school students that builds skills, knowledge, and understanding in English, mathematics, and science. The curriculum is designed to meet the needs of the most advanced learner with an emphasis on creativity, innovation, and scholarly discourse.

Throughout the Cambridge Secondary experience, students develop the skills and content knowledge necessary to meet the demands of advanced course work and ultimately transition successfully to the high school setting.

Students in the Cambridge Secondary cohort will have the opportunity to earn credit in high school courses, which will affect their high school grade point average (GPA) and establish the good study habits necessary to be successful.

• Must be a current 5th, 6th, or 7th grade student

• Must be identified as Gifted and/or have achieved a level of 4 or 5 on the statewide assessment for both English Language Arts and mathematics

• Must have a GPA of at least 3.5 (current 6th and 7th graders)

Cambridge Secondary teachers create an active learning environment in which a student’s thinking will be challenged and classwork will extend what the student could accomplish on her/his own.

Cambridge Secondary teachers:

• have extensive knowledge in their subject area

• teach for depth of content, not breadth

• connect learning to real-world applications

• incorporate a variety of instructional strategies

• use assessment to inform instruction

• are reflective learners themselves

• model problem solving and creative thinking for their students

Participation in the Cambridge Secondary program is not automatic or guaranteed. Students who meet the eligibility requirements can complete and submit a Cambridge Secondary application which includes:

• a student-parent agreement detailing the student’s commitment to participation

• a student self-assessment

• two short response questions
