Choir options at CBS We are very lucky to have a variety of choral opportunities for our Yr 4-6 students. Below is a brief synopsis of the choirs to give you an idea of who and what is involved in each. Students are reminded of auditions and weekly rehearsal times via the CBS news. Mid-Bays Festival Choir (Years 5/6) This choir will be preparing to sing at the Mid-Bays Schools' Music and Arts Festival which will be held in June at the Bruce Mason Centre. The massed choir is made up of students from six other local primary schools as well as Murrays Bay Intermediate. The programme is themed and interspersed with our massed choir songs are items from each of the contributing schools. These choristers are expected to be keen singers who can sing in tune. Choir trainer: Jenny Watt. World Vision Kids for Kids Concert (Year 4) This is a fun, massed singing event which is staged in September at the Bruce Mason Centre. Choirs from the North Shore region are led by Jackie Clarke and Nathan King who entertain while endors-ing the cause of child sponsorship through World Vision. Because the music is relatively straight forward we like to open this choir to Year 4 students with the expectation that they are keen to sing and be involved in a choir. Choir trainer: Sharon Knight. APPA Festival Choir (Year 6) This choir will be preparing to sing at the APPA (Auckland Primary Principals’ Association) Festival in November at the Town Hall. This is a huge event which incorporates choirs from the greater Auckland region. This choir is for students who really enjoy music, who want to develop their voices and learn to sing in parts. While Year 6 students will be given priority for this choir Year 5 students will be invited to audition should we be short of numbers. Choir trainer: Jenny Watt.

Sports Co-Ordinator Wanted We are currently looking for an enthusiastic sports person to lead the way as sports coordinator at CBS from Term 2, approximately 24 hours per week. A passion for sports and for children is a must, plus excellent organisation and communication skills. Please drop in your CV and cover letter to the Deputy Principal, Rachael Aitken by Tuesday 17 March 2015 or send to [email protected]

1974 Part 4 Teaching in the mid-seventies was, quite literally, in another time; it was simpler then than it is today. In my last article I wrote of the assessment options that are now available to us compared in the mid-seventies. Perhaps by coincidence, but probably not, the growth of assessment tools has, seemingly, gone hand in hand with a vastly improved under-standing of the particular needs of students. It is only comparatively recently that the position of special educational needs co-ordinator (SENCO) has become common place in schools. From memory,

and this is where memory can play tricks, as classroom teachers we were unaware of the possible causes of problems that some students might have been having in terms of their learning other than these students were usual-ly labelled as being ‘slow.’ I am convinced that many such students were done a disservice in my class as I did not possess the knowledge to help them in an informed manner. How things have changed. In keeping with society as a whole, today we are all much better informed across a whole range of subjects. Today parents arrive at school with a concept of partnership between home and school. One manifestation of partnership is that parents have often sought professional guidance about their child should they have had any concerns about their learning before coming to school. Parents, rightly, make an assumption that the school will work with them to assist their child’s learning based on an informed analysis of their child’s needs. Hence, we now know so much more about particular issues that I cannot really remember even hearing about when I started teaching. Today it is usual for parents, SENCOs, class teachers and specialists to work together to formulate and implement plans to assist students with particular needs at both ends of the spectrum. Although we are not always successful in our endeavours we are far more aware of the particular needs of students than was once the case and we are better equipped to do something about it. Of course, it is never enough. That is, perhaps, another change in terms of ‘then and now.’ Our expectations have increased immeasurably. While in 1974 we were, largely, a pretty isolated economy at the bottom of the world with comparatively little interconnectivity outside our island borders, today the situation could hardly be more different and this also applies to education.

Lock-down Trial The trial was held on Friday morning and it went very well. Everybody knew what to do and the school was secured with one or two exceptions. These exceptions, having been identified, have now been remedied. Hopefully, we will never need to go into lock-down but it is better that we are prepared should we need to do so. There will be an unannounced fire evacuation shortly.

Walking School Bus These lovely children were spotted on the CBS Walking School Bus last week. (Abigail, Niki, Sophie, Carla, Kaya, Megan and Mr Ku Rush). Well done! Join the CBS Walking School Bus and:

2015 New South Wales (ICAS) Competitions Information Campbells Bay School Years 4, 5, and 6 students have had access to these competitions for the last 13 years, and many have enjoyed considerable success. The competitions offered are as follows:

Digital Technology (Computer Skills) Tuesday 19 May Science Wednesday 3 June Spelling Tuesday 16 June English Tuesday 28 July Mathematics Tuesday 11 August

Who should enter these competitions The competition is a chance to extend your child in subject areas they enjoy success in. They are open to students in Years 4, 5 and 6. We suggest that you avoid entering for subjects in which your child is still developing mastery. If your child enjoys a challenge, they will love this opportunity. If you are new to the competitions, we recommend that you visit the New South Wales University website for practice questions. Parents can purchase previous competition booklets from the same address: www.etc.unsw.edu.au. Today a letter has been sent home to all Year 4, 5 and 6 students with more information and how to enter your child. The New South Wales Competition also offers a writing competition which we have not offered before. I am looking to offer this next year if there is enough interest. This competition will cost more than double the others offered now, between $24 and $28 depending on how many entries we have. If you are interested in entering your child please e-mail at [email protected] and please put Writing NSW as the subject. Rob Padgett - Co-ordinator for New South Wales Competitions

Absences

Friendly reminder: If your child is going to be away sick, at an appointment or on holiday, in the first instance please advise the school office. Often messages given to the teacher are not passed on resulting in an unnecessary phone call to parents. The office will ensure teachers are advised.

Free Wood

We still have free wood available. The wood, on the road side of the netball courts, is available for collection (first in, first served) this afternoon/evening and tomorrow afternoon/evening out of school hours. We will leave the gate unlocked so it will be easy to get to the wood. Please be careful when driving in the grounds as children can be very unpredictable!

New Structure Exactly what this building is has been the subject of considerable conjecture: principal's new office, guard room, new economy sized classroom...........The reality is that it will house equipment associated with the new sprinkler system that is being installed in the new classroom block.

Mobile Library The mobile library visited the school today. Pictured are staff members of the library service along with Joe Lanning (CBS) and Jax, her assistant. The mobile library will also be at school, in the bus bay, on 16 and 30 of March.

The are two entry fees, the $7 fee is for participation in the Fun Run/Walk and the $12 fee also includes a timer for the competitive runners or those who like to keep their time. Also bus tokens are available on registration $3 each. We will still be having a sausage sizzle, however due to new online registrations it will be pay when you arrive at the finish line. Please let me know if you would like to be involved with assisting a team. Dates for the competition can be found on the school Google site under "Sports" then "Rugby". Selection of Teams With the selection of netball and hockey teams about to get underway and in the context that as a very active sporting school it seems that teams are always being selected for one sporting code or another, in terms of team selections I ask that you bear the following in mind: Participation is our first priority, over and above competitive advantage. A prime example, is in the past twelve months our cricket teams attending the one day tournament have increased to five teams. Further, there is and always will be a cut off line, for either not making a team or making a team. This is unavoidable as the line must end and start with someone. Team selection is more art than science. There is a degree of subjectivity. Teams at CBS are selected by volunteers who do their best when selecting teams. The very presence of selectors means that children have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of codes. As we know all team selections can be controversial, this is not only limited to primary school level teams. Controversies can be found in college, club and at national level. Many people have views, some strongly held, about the decisions of selectors associated with our national teams. The column space devoted to decisions by national selections must be enormous. Such discussions and possible controversies are best left for the national scene. They have no place at school level. Hence, if you are unhappy with a selection decision please do not raise the issue with the selector or the school. Please keep it to yourself. If you are so unhappy with a decision, you do have the option of withdrawing your child from the team although this would, of course, be regrettable. Selecting sporting teams is not the core business of the school. Such sporting opportunities are provided as a result of a considerable amount of goodwill on the part of many volunteers. This goodwill of our selectors, the organizers of the codes and the day to day coaches and managers is absolutely essential to the provision of sporting opportunities for children at school level. Please respect our volunteers at all times.
