Introduction Camtasia offers the ability to automatically create captions from your recording. Camtasia uses

a feature of Windows called Speech Recognition that listens to the audio and translates it to

text. In order for this feature to work, you must perform some initial setup, which is explained

in the next section of this guide, “Setting Up Camtasia for Speech Recognition”. The steps in

this section only need to be performed once. If you have already setup Speech Recognition on

your computer, you may skip to “Finishing Recording” on page 11 of this guide.

Setting Up Camtasia for Speech Recognition

Otherwise, you will not be able to perform the steps in this guide.

1. Open Camtasia Studio.

2. Click Tools, move the mouse over Speech…, and select Improve speech to text….

Producing a Recorded Lecture with Captioning

Note: Producing a video using the following steps will “burn” the captions onto the video. This

means that the captions will be a part of the video itself and cannot be turned off.

1. On the Production Wizard window that appears, click the drop down box and select

either MP4 Only (up to 480p) or MP4 Only (up to 720p). MP4 Only (up to 720p) may

produce a higher quality file, but also may be much larger in size. If the final file is too

large you may encounter difficulty uploading it to your course.

2. Under File name and folder, enter a Production name. This will be the title of the video.

Page 15: Camtasia Lecture Recording With Captioning

www.purduecal.edu/oit Page 14

3. By default, Camtasia will save the project in

C:\Users\{your username}\Documents\Camtasia Studio\{Production name}. To

change the save location, click the folder icon next to the current location.

Note: If you changed the save location for the recording file earlier in the guide, it is

recommended that you change to the same location here.

4. Click Finish.

5. The video will render. When it completes, the Production Results window will appear.

Click Finish.

Page 16: Camtasia Lecture Recording With Captioning

6. In the location where you chose to save the files, you should now see the recording file

from before and a new folder that contains the finished lecture video that you will

upload to Blackboard.

Note: As mentioned at the beginning of this section, the video created will contain

permanent captions that cannot be turned off.

7. Continue to the “Uploading a Recorded Lecture with Captioning to Blackboard” section

on page 16 of this guide.
