EDITORIAL COMMENT

cantechonline.com 5NOVEMBER 2018

There will be three supplier innovations presented: Bronze, Silver and Gold awards.

Suppliers have until the end of November to nominate their innovation, so we hope to see plenty of entries.

Moving back to the present, we have plenty to look forward to in this issue. There’s certainly a UK theme, as I pay a visit to the can makers of London, William Say & Co. Our board member Patrick Heskins examines the implications of the Deposit Return Scheme to the metal packaging industry, and we review the British Aerosols Manufacturers Association’s forum.

Elsewhere, we have a necking focus, courtesy of Belvac and Stolle, we examine the new ‘Love Steel’ campaign and editorial board member Simone Vooijs looks at shelf appeal when it comes to metal packaging.

Our new media pack and forward features are now available for 2019, so please do visit our website for more.

I hope you enjoy the issue.

By now Asia CanTech would’ve been and gone, and I hope you had a productive show with lots of decent business being

conducted. We’ll shortly be announcing news of where 2019’s edition will be held, so please keep an eye on our usual channels.

Moving into 2019, our CanTech Grand Tour event in Istanbul has its first keynote speaker. Zeki Saribekir, chief executive officer, at Sarten Ambalaj has been confirmed for the event, which takes place from 25-27 March 2019. With Zeki’s knowledge of the Turkish metal packaging market and the industry as a whole, it’s going to make for a highly interesting presentation. We hope to have a few more announcements regarding the show shortly.

The CanTech Grand Tour event also welcomes the first Global Can Supplier Awards for metal packaging. Taking place on the second evening of the show, the awards will celebrate excellence within the can making industry.

For those of you currently unaware of what the Supplier Awards entails, the highlight of the evening will be the Supplier Innovation Awards, a prestigious accolade for the companies deemed to have the most innovative product/equipment within the industry.

Ball Corporation has announced that it intends to cease production at the company’s San Martino, Italy, facility at the end of December 2018 and only after due negotiation with the trade union.

Customers currently supported by the San Martino beverage container plant will be supplied by other Ball facilities in Europe.

“Given the market environment in Italy, we need to ensure that we remain cost com-petitive for the long term,” said Colin Gillis, president, Ball Beverage Packaging Europe.

“While closing a plant is always a difficult decision, our goal is ensuring the long-term success of the business for all of our stake-holders, including our 3,600 employees in Europe.”

The San Martino site opened in 1981 and employs approximately 70 people. Ball intends to carry out the proposed closure

Sun Chemical appoints Myron Petruch as president and CEOSun Chemical has appointed Myron Petruch as its president and chief executive officer, effective on 1 January 2019.

After serving as president of Sun Chemical performance pigments and general manag-er of the pigments products division since 2008, Petruch takes over from Rudi Lenz, who will transition to the new role of vice chairman of the board at Sun Chemical.

“Myron’s background and track record of success make him the outstanding individ-ual for this very important position at Sun Chemical,” said Masayuki Saito, chairman of the board, Sun Chemical. “On behalf of DIC and Sun Chemical, we are grateful to Rudi for his accomplishments and fine work as president and CEO and we wish Myron every success in the future leading Sun Chemical.”

The companies belonging to the International Organisation of Aluminium Aerosol Container Manufacturers (Aerobal) produced nearly 3.3 billion cans in the first half of 2018, sub-stantially more than in the same period the year before. Adjusted for the production output of new member companies, this figure represents a market growth of about 5%.

The production outputs are as a result of ‘brisk’ demand for deodorants and aerosols, as well as cosmetic products such as dry shampoo, foaming shower gel and suncream.

The European and North American markets dominate the scene in terms of quantity, however it is the growing markets in Asia and South America that have given rise to the increase in demand.

The global movement to reduce plastic in the environment also speak in favour of metal packaging due to its infinite recycling capabilities providing an effective incentive across the entire supply and production chain to collect valuable aluminium and to recycle it in an ecologically sound manner.

Aerobal president Leopold Werdich, said: “Our member companies are conducting intensive joint research with upstream mate-rial suppliers on new alloys for containers. These alloys will help to reduce the already low weight of aluminium containers to an even greater extent, thereby achieving the highest possible level of resource efficiency. This will, in turn, further improve the CO2

footprint of aluminium containers.”

Aerobal reports a five per cent rise in the first half of 2018

Gruppo ASA has renamed its fac-tories in the UK and Switzerland to strengthen the company’s identi-ty on the market.

Central Tin Containers in Speke, Liverpool became ASA UK & Ireland Ltd, while Sauter in Ermatingen, Switzerland was renamed ASA Switzerland AG.

Michele Amati, a member of the executive board of Gruppo ASA said: “This change aims to consolidate the Group’s identity on the market of metal packaging.”

The UK company was acquired in 2015 and Gruppo invested €1bn to install a new line for aerosol cans. This investment was part of the optimisation process that Gruppo ASA has been carrying out on its production through the introduction of new machinery and the rationalisation of existing equipment in order to increase productivity and guarantee higher flexibility and faster response to present and future customers’ demand.

The Swiss company, founded in 1873 on the banks of Lake Costanza, was acquired in 2009. The new ASA Switzerland AG, which boasts over 140 years of expertise and solid know-how in the production of metal packag-ing, is the group’s crown jewel in the infant formula sector.

South Africa feels pinch of tough economyReports by BMi Research show that while post-consumer metal packaging collection is increasing in South Africa, the overall metal packaging market has declined slightly with growth predicted to remain stable in the years to come.

The latest packaging report by BMi Research revealed that an impressive 75.8% of all metal packaging that entered the South African (SA) market during 2017 was recov-ered, compared to 73% the previous year – making SA one of the leaders in the world when it comes to post-consumer metal pack-aging recovery. Internationally it is reported that 75% of all aluminium ever produced is still in use today.

According to Kishan Singh, chief executive officer of MetPac-SA, this positive growth in post-consumer metal recovery is expected to continue, rising to 81.4% by 2023.

However, while the rate of collection is impressive, the metal industry contracted by 5.8% in volume and 0.8% in value on 2017, the report reveals. It says the metal packaging industry shrank by 13,000 tons to 162,000 tons in 2017.

“Like so many other sectors in South Africa, the metal packaging industry has not escaped the effects of the country’s eco-nomic slowdown. The beverage sector, was impacted by the sugar tax that came into effect at the beginning of the year. Despite

these obstacles, we have set ourselves aspi-rational collection targets for the next seven years,” said Singh.

Singh agrees that this contraction is expect-ed to continue as the impact of continued light weighting and the switch from steel to aluminium, he is confident that the market share will remain fairly constant at around 197,000 tons over the next five years, as a result of metal packaging becoming the preferred material, given the pressure from governments and increased Industry Waste Management Plans and Circular Economies. BMi Research predicts the metal packaging market will remain the same as current levels at around 179,000 tons.

“Manufacturers are looking for ways to keep costs down and consumers are paying closer attention to the management of their household budgets. These economic pres-sures are having a diverse impact across, and even within, categories. As a result, we are seeing a growing demand for both smaller and larger pack sizes, plastic pouches and no-frills packaging,” Singh observed.

Metal decorating and coating equipment firm, Crabtree, has expanded its engineering team with the appointment of Steve Greener as control systems engineer.

Greener has joined Crabtree to lead on prod-uct development and the design of control system hardware and software. He has extensive experi-ence in the metal decorating and coating industry and previously worked for Crabtree in a number of roles over a 26-year period.

Commenting on his return to Crabtree, Steve Greener said: “I’m delighted to be back working with Crabtree. It is a leading company in the metal decorating and coating industry and takes genuine pride in working with customers in delivering the highest standard of products and services.”

Stephen McDowell, managing director, Crabtree added: “It’s exciting to have Steve with us as we look to grow the company further and expand our capabilities. Key to this is product development and we’ll be har-nessing Steve’s experience in this to continue to deliver innovative solutions for both current and new customers.”

The independent craft brewing associations of nine European countries have announced they will be forming a new body, the Independent Brewers of Europe (IBE), whose aim is to work together to promote and advance the mutual interests of their members with the European institutions and media.

Bodies from France, Italy, Denmark, Ireland, Sweden, the United Kingdom, Spain, Netherlands and the Czech Republic, all of whom represent smaller, independent craft brewers, agreed their plan at a meeting in Brussels. With approaching two thousand member breweries, the nine organisations represent a growing proportion of Europe’s brewers, producing local, artisanal beers of quality and character that drinkers demand. They employ local people and encourage the responsible consumption of their beers in social settings in their communities.

The IBE intends to convey its message both politically and commercially in Europe, where the small independent producer’s

Nine European countries to form the Independent Brewers of Europe (IBE)voice is often not heard.

Mike Benner, chief executive of SIBA said: “We’re very pleased to see progress in establishing a much-needed voice for independent brewing organisations across Europe. The craft beer revolution has spread across the continent and with well over 5,000 breweries the sector is well-placed to supply the diverse range of high quality beers demanded by today’s discerning drinkers. We know that beer drinkers in the UK care about the prov-enance of beers and it’s clear that the same applies across Europe.”

The IBE aims to become a central point of contact for the European institutions and to field representatives to make their case on issues of concern, such as regulation, taxa-tion and access to market, and invites similar bodies from other countries to join them. The nine organisations are:Independent Brewers of IrelandThe Society of Independent Brewers, (SIBA) UK

Ball increase its wind powerBall Corporation and One Energy Enterprises LLC have announced plans to build three more wind turbines at Ball’s Findlay, Ohio, bever-age packaging plant. The three new turbines will join three similar turbines that have been in operation since December 2015.

Together, the six turbines will use sustainable wind resources to supply approximately 30% of the Findlay plant’s power needs at a fixed cost for 17 more years (the initial three turbines) and 20 years (the three new turbines). The Findlay plant, which employs more than 370 people, makes 100% infinitely recyclable metal containers.

“Ball’s sustainability progress is powered by projects throughout our company, and our expansion of the use of wind power in Findlay is yet another example,” said Glenn Jost, the company’s Findlay plant manager. “By expanding our use of wind turbines to deliver power to our plant, Ball is increasing its sup-port of renewable energy while ensuring a fixed-rate cost for a significant amount of our Findlay power needs for decades.”

Ball Corporation has elected John A. Bryant, retired chairman, pres-ident and chief executive officer of Kellogg Company, to serve as a director of the corporation.

Bryant, 52, joined Kellogg in 1998 and has served in a variety of strategic leadership roles since then. He most recently served as chairman, president and CEO. Bryant also sits on the Macy's, Inc. board of directors.

"John is a welcome addition to our board of directors," said John A. Hayes, chairman, president and chief executive officer. "His wealth of experience as CEO of a global Fortune 500 company, as well as his strate-gic consumer-focused, financial and interna-tional background, is an excellent fit for us as we focus on achieving our Drive for 10 vision and making the can the most sustainable package."

Ball elects John A. Bryant as directorThe project will cost approxi-

mately $9 million which is being financed by One Energy. The six total turbines will generate more than 24,000,000kWh annually.

To further increase com-munity impact, Ball and One Energy will create another three $5,000 Megawatt Scholarships in Findlay to be awarded each year the turbines are in

operation, in addition to the three already in place. The Megawatt Scholarships will be awarded to local high school graduates pur-suing a two-year or four-year higher education degree in science, technology, engineering or maths (STEM) fields of study.

“Support of STEM education is critical to Ball’s ability to provide products that help sustain our planet,” said Jost. “The critical importance of STEM learning – particularly for disadvantaged students – will be key to ensuring companies have the talent they need to thrive.

“That includes our efforts to further develop our Findlay workforce pipeline for engineering positions, and for other STEM roles at Ball.”

Tata Steel’s European business has announced a partnership with leading chemicals company Nouryon and the Port of Amsterdam to develop the largest green hydrogen cluster in Europe.

The announcement is one of a number of initiatives to help Tata Steel’s European business achieve its ambition of becoming carbon neutral from 2050.

The companies will together explore the feasibility of a water electrolysis facility to produce hydrogen and oxygen at Tata Steel’s IJmuiden steelworks in the Netherlands. Using renewable electricity, the plant would save up to 350,000 tonnes of CO2 per year, equivalent to the emissions of more than 40,000 homes.

Hydrogen is a vital element which serves the dual purpose of being a carbon alternative for the steelmaking industry while also being used to help create everyday household prod-ucts from the waste gases produced during steelmaking.

Hans Fischer, CEO of Tata Steel’s European business, said: “We are already one of the world’s most CO2-efficient steel companies, but our ambition is to become a carbon-neu-tral steelmaker. The steelmaking industry has a collective responsibility to set bold tar-gets, raise the bar and find opportunities to

Every September, South Korea celebrates its annual lunar thanksgiving holiday, one of its most important traditions, and, thanks to its award winning rectangular aluminium food cans, Ardagh Group is able to make a significant contribution.

Chuseok, as the holiday is formally called, takes the form of a three-day public holiday where the presentation of gifts to family and friends is an important feature involving prac-tically the entire population. One of the most popular gifts is an attractive presentation box comprising cans of luncheon meat and tuna. Luncheon meat is considered a luxury in South Korea, used in various dishes such as stews, and is highly valued in cans where it can be stored for long periods.

Many of the contents within the box are pro-vided by Daesang Corporation, one of South

Korea’s leading food manufacturers and a major supplier of luncheon meats in southeast Asia. They have worked with Ardagh Group, whose Goseong plant in the south of the coun-try, which opened in 2009, to manufacture rectangular aluminium food cans for luncheon meat specifically for the South Korean market.

The innovative can, the recipient of several international packaging awards, has an unusu-al 'necked-out' opening feature to allow easy serving, and is sealed with a state-of-the-art Easy Peel end. An Easy Peel closure is very easy to open for all generations and part of Korean law on opening solutions.

“Metal packaging plays an important role in South Korea, and particularly during the Chuseok season when it takes pride of place in the gift hamper,” said Ardagh Group’s Patrick Savouré, commercial director.

Last month, Tata Steel announced that HIsarna, the company’s ground-breaking new reactor, had exceeded expectations in sus-tainable steel production, with the possibility of achieving a CO2 reduction of more than 50%. HIsarna is expected to play a pivotal role in meeting the recycling ambitions of the circular economy.

Also announced recently was Tata Steel’s intention to cooperate with Dow Chemical on a pilot project which seeks to convert carbon monoxide – a by-product gas from blast fur-naces – into naphtha, a liquid hydrocarbon mixture. The naphtha is expected to be used as feedstock for the production of other chem-ical products, another example of integration into the circular economy.

Anumber of global organisations includ-ing the likes of Tata Steel, are backing the campaign for the increased use of steel for beverage cans, under the

motto: “Increased use and increased recycling rates of steel beverage cans reduces waste and saves energy”.

This global campaign has been initiat-ed by members of the Product Sustainability Committee of the World Steel Association. The campaign is aimed at increasing consumer aware-ness of the benefits of steel beverage cans and to remind packaging producers that modern steel is an attractive alternative to other packaging materials.

“Today’s modern steel is very different from that of 30 years ago – matching and surpass-ing many other beverage packaging alternatives. It’s now thinner, lighter and stronger,” explains Bradley Forder, communications manager at the World Steel Association. “Modern steel is a real, widely available alternative, with 100 per cent recyclability credentials.”

THE CAMPAIGNAt the heart of the campaign is an advert (see below right), which has been developed to encourage consumers to drink from steel cans. It aims to reposition steel in the minds of consumers as an alternative recyclable and recycled material that they may not have considered until now.

Due to steel’s qualities, the campaign is well positioned to take advantage of the increasing goodwill with regards to steel as a permanently recycled material, as Forder explains: “Steel cans are ideally suited as containers for beverages,” he says. “They are easy to cool, great for keeping the contents fresh and prevent breakages when on the

go, due to steel’s strength. They can also be recy-cled again and again, either as different products or even another steel can, with no loss of quality.

“Every can recycled saves energy: the same amount required to power a TV for one hour, one laundry load in a washing machine or 24 hours of a 10W energy-efficient LED light bulb.

“Steel is the most recycled packaging material on the planet, and there is more that we can all do to further increase the levels of recycling. Every can recycled saves raw materials, CO2 emissions, energy and water. You can help by recycling every steel can. Because steel beverage cans are magnet-ic, they are easy to separate from other materials making them the simplest beverage packaging material to recover from any waste stream.

“Join the revolution and choose steel cans.”

THE ADVERTTo stay drinks-related, the creative for ‘Choose Steel Cans’ leads with a ‘vote with your mouth’ headline and recycling message, as well as a tip to help consumers identify a steel can from other metals when they next shop.

The advert has also been adapted for industry audiences, repositioning steel as ‘new modern steel’. The advert uses the same can image to grab attention and is supported by messaging that explains the benefits of steel – from recyclability to new surfaces and finishes – encouraging the industry to reconsider steel.

“The lead message to consumers is around steel’s recyclability; the industry advert encour-ages support of the recycling revolution that we’re asking of consumers,” notes Forder. “Steel scrap is needed for the manufacture of new steel, and so every steel plant in the world is already a recycling plant with a wide recycling net-

work already in existence. No new, significant investment needs to be made to recycle steel. Choosing steel helps keep recycling easy.

“Steel beverage cans are put directly into fur-naces and melted down to produce new steel, as high-quality as steel made from iron ore. This means the cans can be made into new steel prod-ucts, saving the energy and CO2 associated with extracting new raw materials. This can save as much as 62 per cent of the energy associated with making new steel. Recycling one tonne of scrap steel saves over two tonnes of raw materials and about 1.5 tonnes of CO2 emissions.”

The modern can-making processes mean that steel beverage cans are now lighter and more than 30 per cent thinner than they were in the 1980s, and can be made in lots of different shapes and sizes. Specialist printing and lacquers mean that cans can even be made to change colour at differ-ent temperatures. Or, for the cool look, they can be colour-free.

“Choosing steel beverage cans when people are out shopping will help increase the use of steel cans and the recycling revolution they bring,” explains Forder. “Consumers can easily check if a can is steel, by looking out for the campaign mag-net logo on the back of the can or simply using a fridge magnet to test if it is magnetic.”

STEEL

SOCIAL To give the campaign added clarity, the World Steel Association has commissioned a website ‘www.votesteel.com’ and encouraging the indus-try to use the hashtag #LoveSteel on social media to enhance the debate around steel.

Due to steel’s inherent qualities, this is some-thing the World Steel Organisation believes that will resonate with consumers, particularly consid-ering the negativity to do with plastic packaging in the press recently.

“We recycle some 600 million tonnes of steel a year globally and every can recycled saves 70 per cent of the energy of producing new steel,” adds Clare Broadbent, head of Sustainability, World Steel Association. “This campaign is designed to raise awareness of the benefits of steel for drinks cans and encourages manufacturers and consumers to choose steel.” CT

Stepping into William Say & Co’s manu-facturing facility in Bermondsey, South London, UK, is unmistakably a trip down memory lane. From the retro decor in the

offices, and nostalgic cans aplenty decorating the rooms, you can see heritage is important for this London-based can maker since the 1930s. Even the walk from South Bermondsey station – past the football club of Millwall FC and through the estates of working class South London – awakens the senses; you could easily be transported back to the 1970s.

That’s not to say this is a company stuck in a time warp, far from it. As Stu Wilkinson, sales and marketing director at William Say, explains, the company’s history is so unquestionably London and British, it’s hard to ignore. In fact, it’s a unique selling point, in the age of the global conglomerate and regular acquisition within the industry.

Past meets present

Alex Fordham recently visited William Say, can makers of London. He speaks with fourth generation can maker, Stu Wilkinson, to fi nd out

more about one of the few remaining can makers remaining in the UK’s capital

“William Say & Co was originally situated in the centre of London underneath The Crooked Billet pub,” says Wilkinson. “With patent appli-cations dating back pre-1930, William Say’s first success came with the invention of a pressed metal closure which was used to seal the wooden tea chests as they passed through London docks in the city’s then booming tea trade.

“Cans were a natural progression and with the partnership of Denis Wilkinson, William Say & Co quickly out-grew two consecutive freehold sites in Wapping, Central London. After inherit-ing rights to the remaining shares from Mr Say, Denis Wilkinson then continued to push both P. Wilkinson Containers, and William Say & Co, through further periods of expansion. William Say & Co is still owned by the Wilkinson family, where we now reside in our Bermondsey home.

“This once small partnership between two men is now a market leader, thanks to substantial

recent investments in machinery and systems, but we have been careful to keep our traditional products and heritage.”

AN IMPORTANT HERITAGEFor Wilkinson, the history of the company is still as important today as it has been in the past. “Our heritage is a nice way for our customers to see our rich experience within the trade,” he notes. “Our marketing message has been so successful, so we see it as an important tool for us in the future too.”

The business itself is a two-fold entity, with P. Wilkinson stockist of metal and plastic containers in the UK, offering packaging solutions from 50ml right up to 220L containers and William Say & Co., involved with the manufacture of tinplate cans. Although both businesses act as two separate entities, both businesses are intrinsically intertwined.

“The business has two facets, the can making side and the plastic side, but both are intertwined, with the same owners, directors, but different

staff,” Wilkinson says. “We have one office, but there is a clear separation.

“My grandfather saw William Say as a small manufacturing business, a safety blanket. At the back end of the First World War there was uncer-tainty, but he felt if he could maintain a wage, he wouldn’t have to be employed by anyone else. This was the beginning of William Say, which has grown into the success story we see today.”

A DIFFERENTIATIONSince then, William Say & Co. has been run as a family business that has been manufacturing metal packaging in central London since before the Second World War. Despite dramatic expan-sion, both the production lines and press shop are still situated within the three acre London site at Bermondsey (near to London Bridge and Tower Bridge). With the business able to offer short lead times, flexibility, bespoke print, embossing & stock holding to all its customers, it’s no surprise that the company has accumulated an impressive roster of clients, including Fortnum & Mason and Selfridges. The company is also responsible for being the supplier of choice for Farrow & Ball Paints for the past few decades.

“We have gone back into places like Fortnum & Mason, and diversifying offerings in niche mar-kets – we’re right at the niche end of can making,” says Wilkinson. However, it’s mainly industrial containers for coatings and solvents and white label stuff that is our trademark.

“Our product range includes Lever Lid Tins, which are suitable for paints and varnishes. We have Slip Lid Tins for inks and candles, Seamless Boxes for products, Ring Pull Tins for promo gifts, Dome Top Tins for oils, and Outside Curl

is obviously a hard one, as plastic does have its place, but it’s hard to ignore the huge benefits and the sustainability of metal.

“From my perspective it’s the problem with multi-layered plastic that is the problem, and of course single-use plastic. The metal industry as a whole has that sustainability message, but we don’t tend to ram that down people’s throats – it has never been part of the game plan either.

“As members of the Metal Packaging Manufacturers Association, and Metal Packaging Europe, our William Say cans have the ‘Metal Recycles Forever’ mark. This mark is part of a campaign aimed at tackling behavioral change, to help consumers better understand the role they play in keeping metal in the material loop by recycling their empty packaging.”

Looking forward into the future, Wilkinson was keen to stress how the company is keen to continue putting its customers first.

“A challenge for us in the future is trying to get our message across so many different markets,” Wilkinson explains. “We need to ensure we don’t spread ourselves too thinly. Our heritage story ensures we remain well known, as it’s a great way for potential customers to see our portfolio.

“We will do what our customers want to do; we are all about adding value to our customers, and that won’t ever change.” CT

Tins for semi-solid materials. “Our point of difference as a business is the

flexibility and services we offer. Our flexibility is our strength, whether it’s lower run lengths or not. If we can add value to one of our customers we do it. We pride ourselves on being as helpful and flexible as possible.”

Niche products have become something of a trademark for William Say. Wilkinson was keen to share with CanTech an example of a project that is typical with Say’s standing in tinplate can manufacturing.

He explains: “We created a series of printed slip lid tins for Bill’s Restaurant chains, which are embossed with the Bill’s logo on the lid. We designed 3D visuals prior to production in order to help initial retail.

“These tins were nominated for a UK Packaging Awards and is a great example of our bespoke packaging talents.”

METAL RECYCLES FOREVERWhen asked whether it has been difficult in balancing commitments in both the plastic and metal industries, Wilkinson was keen to stress that both packaging formats have their place, which is something the packaging industry seems to be blurring of late. He explains: “We just try to be as open and transparent as possible,” he says. It

and caps, and then began to import them from Germany. This is why Gintaras Klovas came up with the idea of starting to manufacture metal twist off caps in his country. They had not been manufactured in Lithuania and generally in the Baltic States, so it had been an empty niche. He bought the first caps stamping line from China, modernised it with the help of colleagues and subsequently started manufacturing.

Is the location of Elmoris in Lithuania an advantage for the production of twist off caps, and if so, why? Dimitrijus Matvejevas: We are in a great geo-graphical location; there are European countries west of us and there is Asia east of us. Therefore, our market is very wide-ranging due to the conven-ient logistics. Europe is not far by road transport and Asia is accessible by road transport and by train. The port of Klaipeda is not far from Vilnius, where we are located (about 300 km), so we trans-port production by containers as well. Many people in Lithuania are well educated and speak several languages; it makes it easy to communicate with different regions, East and West.

Does your company find the market for twist off closures a mature market or still with growth potential? Matvejevas: The world is increasingly reluctant to use plastics, so it is likely that the sales of twist off

Screw caps of all variety on glass jars and bottles have been around for over 150 years. The threaded screw top made a good bacterial barrier for canning purposes for

a range of products. However, the invention of the twist off lug closure in 1926 by the White Cap company in Chicago, US, was an important step forward in terms of food preservation and consum-er convenience. The system uses vapour during the capping operation minimising the oxygen residue in the headspace of the filled jar, which results in a much longer shelf life. At the same time, twist off caps are easy to open for consumers and the tight reseal, after initially opening, allows perfect storage in the refrigerator.

Twist off caps started their victory march in the 1960s in the baby food industry in the US. Soon after, they conquered the fast growing market for glass jars, first in the US and Western Europe and latterly actually the whole world.

Over the years, a lot of consolidation has taken place on the side of various cap producers, leaving some major producers like Silgan, Crown, Massilly, Technocap and some others as the global leaders in this market.

Was there a special reason for Gintaras Klovas (founder) starting the production of twist off caps some 20 years ago in Lithuania?Marius Augustinas: At that time, one glass factory in Lithuania started to produce glass jars

With the packaging industry becoming reluctant to use plastics, metal twist off caps are become increasingly relevant in the marketplace.

caps will still continue to grow worldwide. Metal packaging and twist off caps have the potential to grow; competition between packaging types is increasing, so we expect growth.

Can you tell us how your company gained all the experience and the know-how for the production technology for twist off caps?Augustinas: Our company began its activity with used equipment, tried technological processes and experimenting by producing with this equip-ment, before it felt the need to work with modern equipment. Experience has been gained by com-municating with people, who were working or cooperating with the caps manufacturing industry, which understood these processes, including mate-rial and equipment suppliers. The problems and the manufacturing process inside the company were also analysed, the training was performed by testing and analysis methods. During 20 years of work, by means of testing methods, the company has acquired its know-how, which is now successfully used in everyday activities.

We saw some producers of twist off caps partially switch to PVC-free closures; do you see this as an important trend?Matvejevas: The market for PVC-free caps is growing, which is driven by consumers’ desire for more organic and cleaner products. This is also a result of some EU laws and directives, but the

market for standard caps really is not diminishing. In fact, in some markets we can see growth; the demand for the standard products is stable. We are not planning to fully transfer to the manufacture of PVC-free caps yet.

How does your company handle the eternal com-plaints about high opening torques for twist off caps? Is there progress in this? Are the torques better for PVC free caps?Matvejevas: We invest in customers’ education and training; we advise on how to properly use our products technologically. We only use the materials of the best European suppliers, so we do not see problems. There is no really significant progress in opening torques for the standard caps. The torque problem for PVC-free caps is even smaller, because other materials are used.

Regarding printing, I saw you invested recently in a modern six colour line from Koenig & Bauer. Do you have your own lithography department? Augustinas: Recently we bought, in our opinion, the most modern printing line in the metal printing market, namely a six-colour Metalstar-3 line from Koenig & Bauer. We have the lithography depart-ment with two exploited printing lines, layout, paint preparation and operations for advanced functions and additional equipment.

Most of the processes are digitalised, including the preparation of the design for the printing, the

management of individual functions of the print-ing line and the design quality control.

Do you print tinplate sheets for other can making companies as well?Metvejevas: Yes, we provide tinplate coating and printing services to companies, operating in various fields, including the food industry, the packaging industry and in other types of industry.

What do you see for Elmoris as the countries/regions with the biggest growth potential for twist off caps?Metvejevas: All regions are growing steadily due to the globalisation and free movement of goods. The consumption of goods is growing all over the world, so too in Europe. We feel the growth in Western markets, but we also are looking around in other regions, countries, and continents.

What are the important changes within your company today, such as widening your market or extending your production capability?Metvejevas: At the moment, the logistics net-work of goods provides opportunities to deliver our products to any part of the world, so we are definitely not planning to stop, and we are con-stantly looking for new markets. We are supplying to 37 countries and that is definitely not the final number.

It is also important to mention that we are building a new factory and we are moving there next year. We will become even more attractive to our customers, the efficiency of production

and volumes will increase and we will modernise most processes. It is important to know that with the construction of the new factory and the new production facilities, the processes at Elmoris will become more sustainable, whereas at the same time we will be more flexible to meet the constantly rising demands for quality.

What are specific innovations in your technology for twist off production or in the design of the caps itself?Augustinas: We have our Department of Technical Innovations, where our specialists have accumulated vast experience and our strong team itself is able to improve, and accelerate manu-facturing processes. For example, we are making spare parts ourselves.

When we ordered them from manufacturers, their arrival took up to two months. You can imagine, how long that is in the manufacturing industry. When we started to manufacture the components ourselves, we get them 10 times faster and cheaper at the same time.

Do you advise fillers on what machines they should be buying?Metvejevas: Yes, we cooperate with several companies, manufacturing twisting and filling machines, and know how these machines work, so we recommend them with conviction.

We can offer technical advice to our customers on the equipment they have, because our technicians have accumulated vast experience. CT

Sensory Analytics has expanded its SpecMetrix ACS container coating measure-ment systems product line to include the SpecMetrix ACS-T34 System, a fully auto-mated method for can makers to measure all applied beverage and food container coatings with greater accuracy.

Sensory, of North Carolina, US, part-nered with Australian company Versatile Technologies to incorporate the SpecMetrix coating thickness and film weight measure-ment technology into Versatile’s fully automat-ic gauging systems. The ACS-T34 Automatic: Coating Thickness Gauge is said to be the most cutting-edge system available to can makers and unmatched by other gauges due to its level of automation, flexibility and range of use. The integration of the SpecMetrix ‘ruggedised optical interference’ (ROI) technology enables the automatic gauge to accurately measure down to sub-micron levels all internal and external coatings, including over-varnish lay-ers over ink, for 202-300 body diameter beverage cans at any height without stopping or changeover.

It has been reported that the SpecMetrix ACS systems improve process control, reduce waste and material costs, offer shorter changeover times and decrease cus-tomer issues.

EyeVision now also supports IP cameras such as e.g. Mobotix, as well as all other IP camer-as on the market. Therefore, the images can be directly loaded into the EyeVision software and a detour via a browser is not necessary.

Due to the IP camera support, the user now can also implement outdoor applications with the EyeVision software more easily. For example, the reading of a counter reading or the classic IP camera application; with traffic supervision.

Also, IP cameras can give a good over-view over areas, that are not accessible for a plant operator. For example, possible

collisions can be avoided and in case of dis-turbance, error search is made easier. This is very important for process surveillance in industrial machine vision.

Therefore, the EyeVision is now even more flexible. The user can make use of all functions of the software. The intuitive self-explanatory drag-and-drop programming is also carried out as usual. All applications such as pattern matching, code reading, object counting, colour detection, measurement technology, can now be undertaken with IP cameras and EyeVision software. This works completely without programming skills.

spin neck and flangers to reduce the size of the ap-erture and create the flange in the same machine. This process took a die necked can, spun the neck to a smaller diameter and created the flange at – by the standards of the day – extremely high speeds. However, its capabilities were limited and a new generation of die neckers were born that not only made the MB Spin Neckers redundant, it allowed can makers to take their neck diameters all the way down from 211 – or greater – to 202.

The actual metal forming process itself – the basic ‘What does it do?’ and ‘How does it do it?’ – has changed over time. In its simplest terms, the open end of the can is lubricated on the outside, then pressurised with air and pushed into a series of dies, called stages, one after the other. Each stage

Irwin, Belgian Tool and Die, Belvac, Amer-ican National Can, CMbE, and SLAC are all names that have been associated with tra-ditional die necking equipment. And now,

Stolle Machinery is entering the marketplace with a new die necker that advances that technology once again.

Die necking was originally developed to prepare the can for flanging prior to accepting the closure or end. And in the beginning, the necker was a dedi-cated, separate machine. The process was designed for both steel and aluminium cans, but since the ma-terials have different forming characteristics, there were subtle differences in the machinery itself.

It’s well documented that in the early 1980s, MetalBox Engineering developed the 160 and 240

does the same amount of work. The number of stages is dependent upon the starting diameter of the can, the finished diameter of the end, the shape of the neck and the thickness of the materi-al being formed. As can thicknesses reduces, more necking stages are required.

But as can lines and machine speeds have increased, so has both the necking equipment’s complexity and design. If you look at the mechanism that drives the die neckers of today, it may look similar to that of decades ago, but the background technology is significantly advanced.

For example, the cams that are used for push-er and knockout have very sophisticated profiles and are manufactured from the latest alloys in or-der to optimise the metal forming process, while maintaining a robust solution for machine longevity.

The next generation of neckers also began to integrate additional features such as an integral waxer and flanger, creating a reduction in can handling, including conveying, and line control. The reduced set-up time of this equipment and the need for less skilled operators led to the huge success of die necking.

It’s only in the last 15 years that die neckers have become more than just a means of necking and have become a multi-tool for the can maker. The newest generation of neckers are also flan-gers, internal base reformers and sophisticated quality control devices via the introduction and integration of light testing and vision inspec-tion to the system. They cover not only the neck forming but also many other aspects of the can line.

Die neckers are greedy machines in the fact that they consume significant amounts of vacuum and air, both of which are expensive to produce and as more stages are added this consumption increases. This is one of the issues that the latest gener-ation of die neckers, seeks to address. Their advanced designs in-corporate both the latest tech-nology as well as several new features that have been developed to help move neckers to their next generation.

This versatile piece of equipment is destined to continue its prominence in the can making line and shows great promise to advanced can makers the world over. CTCC

Stolle’s Die Necker The new Stolle Die Necker Machine represents another mile-stone in Stolle’s line of value-added can product on equipment. This modular machine is designed to neck two-piece cans to accept a specified diameter end.

In addition, on to necking, the machine can be equipped with modules to perform other processing functions on the cans, including flanging, base reforming and light testing. The Stolle Necker can also be equipped with infeed and discharge vision inspection on systems to perform 100 per cent inspections of cans within the machine.

Each module of the Stolle Necker includes a 20-pocket trans-fer wheel that moves the cans into a 12-pocket process turret wheel. Every process turret has cam-driven pushers that move the cans into the tooling. Modules with necking tools also have rear pushers to move tools into the cans for the neck forming process. Aided by air, the can is pushed from the tooling via the knockout while the pusher ram retracts, then the cans exit the turret and are transferred to the next module by its transfer wheel. This process is repeated through the required stages of the machine to perform all the steps of necking, as well as flanging, bottom reforming, light testing and vision inspection functions if so equipped. The finished cans exit the final pro-cess turret and are transferred by an air track to the plant can conveying system.

The Stolle Necker is equipped with quick change height and diameter features so the machine can be easily and quickly modified to run different can sizes, and all process modules feature quick change tooling. All the bearings in the machine are sealed for life, including those of the cam followers. The Stolle Necker also features full machine and process moni-toring capability for integration into a plant-wide control and reporting system.

tional Administrations. However, DEFRA has stated its ambition to become a world leader in resource efficiency promising to review the PRN system, consider restrictions on single-use pack-aging and examine the use of DRS to increase recycling of on-the-go packaging.

In England, DRS remains subject to consulta-tion, but in Scotland, it is already a reality. For the aerosol sector, the question is how the loss of drinks containers to DRS will impact on the way in which used aerosols are collected and recycled and what this means for industry. Key to all of this is the issue of waste classification.

Most post-consumer, empty or waste aerosols contain residual flammable contents such as LPG, ethanol or other solvents. These residual levels are sufficiently low that when mixed with other waste, aerosols are not classified as hazardous. If a signif-icant proportion of drinks containers are removed from kerbside collections however, post-consumer aerosols would comprise a greater percentage of the total waste and consequently DRS could result in the need for segregation. The end result is that aerosols would be classified as hazardous waste.

In addition to removing certain materials from existing kerbside collections, there are a number of other factors to consider when seeking to under-stand how DRS might impact upon current aerosol recycling practices. For instance, DRS that uses re-verse vending machines as the collection mechanism s not suitable for aerosols as the machine crushes the can, which would lead to the release of flammable gasses. Local authorities are also generally not in favour of DRS, as their focus is upon higher value materials such as aluminium and ultimate-ly, bespoke DRS take aerosols are likely to be prohibitively expensive to operate.

Each year the UK uses around 600 mil-lion aerosols. With approximately 50 per cent of aerosols made from tinplated steel, and the other half from high-grade

aluminium, this represents almost 30,000 tonnes of reclaimable metal that can be recycled each year.

However, the landscape for recycling post- consumer packaging waste is changing. This is not surprising given the move towards a circular economy.

In June this year, both the Waste Framework and Packaging Waste Directives were amended to in-corporate elements of the EU Circular Economy package aimed to encourage the recycling of waste into new materials within the EU.

The key policy instrument is Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), which requires waste produc-ers to provide a financial contribution of between 80 per cent and 100 per cent of the necessary costs of meeting the recycling targets.

Significantly however, the amended Waste Framework Directive also permits the use of DRS as a means to encourage efficient collection of used products and materials. Previously it had been ar-gued that DRS was a technical a barrier to trade and so was counter to the single market.

The amended Packaging Waste Directive also sets new recycling targets for 2025 and 2030 for plastic packaging (50 per cent and 55 per cent), aluminium packaging (50 per cent and 60 per cent) and ferrous metal packaging (70 per cent and 80 per cent).

IMPLEMENTATIONIt is not yet clear how the UK will implement the amended directives as the 24-month implementa-tion period is significantly after Brexit and waste management is set to be devolved to the four Na-

It is also important to consider the investment made by organisations like BAMA and the UK’s leading metal packaging manufacturers, repro-cessors and packer-fillers, in programmes like MetalMatters, designed to help local authori-ties and motivate residents to recycle more by supporting the UK’s current kerbside recycling schemes. This investment and communications campaigns has helped metal packaging recycling reach record levels and today, more than 95 per cent of local authorities accept empty aerosols in their kerbside collection or can bank schemes.

DRS IN EUROPE It is pertinent to note at this juncture that while DRS are in operation across Europe in countries such as Germany, Sweden, Denmark and Norway, all of which use a reverse vending machine or a can bank system, all countries except one intro-duced DRS before kerbside collections. The im-pact of DRS on kerbside collections is extremely difficult if not impossible to gauge, based upon the experiences of these countries.

Clearly, if DRS results in aerosols being collect-ed separately and local authorities are forced to treat the bulk collection as hazardous waste, the result is that thousands of tonnes of metal would be lost from the circular economy every year.

This does not mean that there is not a valid role for DRS. On the contrary, by limiting DRS to on-the-go drinks containers of all materials, it

cantechonline.com 31

can play a significant role in reducing litter, pro-tecting the environment and helping to achieve a circular economy. DRS materials should also be mixed with separately collected fractions of the same materials for recycling to prevent the need for reclassification under the waste regulations.

Meanwhile, local authorities are likely to find themselves tasked with increasingly challeng-ing recycling targets and there is no avoiding the reality that kerbside collections will play an integral role in achieving these targets. Industry- funded schemes like MetalMatters therefore remain critical.

And as we move closer to the implementation of DRS in England, BAMA continues to work with its members and the wider industry, investi-gating new disposal routes, developing guidance and driving innovation in design, exploring ways in which aerosols can be depressurised when emp-ty, making them even safer to recycle in existing kerbside systems or as part of a DRS and to avoid classification as hazardous waste when collected separately. for aerosols throughout the EU. This is said to allow fillers to continue supplying to their biggest export market without any significant changes to products or processes for the significant future. In a post-Brexit market, this could prove to be a crucial piece of legislation.

Heskins concluded with the commonly held view that consumer perception of plastic will put added pressure on plastic aerosols, which is an obvious benefit to the metal container. It’ll be interesting to see how this impacts on metal aerosol sales in the next 12 months.

On the commercial side, Mary Frash, PR manag-er at MIST Understood, explained how in an effort to improve consumers’ perception of aerosol prod-ucts to increase purchase intent and usage, CAPCO has spearheaded a campaign, Mist: Understood, that speaks to millennial consumers. The aim with the campaign is to continue to improve consumer’s

Keeping aerosols on the agenda

BAMA’s chief executive, Patrick Heskins, began the conference by stating that more aerosols were manufactured in the UK in 2017 than ever before. A record

1.562 billion aerosols were reportedly filled, with the most interesting figure being that 13 million more antiperspirants were manufactured than the previous year, a four per cent growth.

Air fresheners saw a 20 per cent rise on the pre-vious year, and dusting aids filled also increased by 15 per cent. Heskins was also keen to stress how the organisation’s membership has grown in the previous 12 months.

There was also other positivity from Heskins, with the news that the European Commission has completed their evaluation of the Aerosol Dispenser Directive and it has decided that it’s fit for purpose from both a consumer safety perspec-tive, and in relation to creating a single market

perception of aerosol products and increase their purchasing and turn the perception into a positive one.

Paul Vanston from the Industry Council for Packaging & the Environment (INCPEN) gave an overview of expected regulatory changes to the aer-osols supply chain. Chief of those is the upcoming budget (at time of going to press), with the possible implementation of taxes to single use plastics. This may impact on metal aerosols, where the package has some sort of single use plastic element.

Other directives on the agenda include the Circular Economy directives which are in transpo-sition by 5 July 2020. The EU is also looking into an EU Single Use Plastics Directive around May 2019, and the possible implications of the Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) in the UK and whether this will be UK-wide.

David Harrison, client director at Franklands Insurance and Risk Management, provided dele-gates with advice on cyber security. With around 30,000 websites targeted by cyber hackers each month, Harrison stressed how it’s as important to ensure a robust insurance policy for cyber insurance as it would be for your businesses property contents insurance. Other tips included were checking your passwords were regularly updated.

An overview of a typical comprehensive cyber package includes:

• Loss of Data/Software programmes• Network Business Interruption• Cyber/Privacy• Extortion• Ransom monies • Data• Breach Costs • Reputational Damage • Telephone Hacking• Outsource Service Providers• Network Security • Digital Media Liability

Ramon Arratia, sustainability director at Ball Beverage Packaging Europe, presented on how the aluminium industry is increasing recycling rates for aluminium cans. Aluminium obviously has a ter-rific sustainability story, but it’s still plagued by the fact that aluminium has a higher carbon footprint than some other packaging forms. This has led the industry to investigate what it can do to minimise this footprint. Ball themselves have innovated in this field with carbon free smelting – Elysis technology and ASI – Aluminium Stewardship Initiative.

Chief to this strategy has been making alumin-ium products with less weight, and increasing recycling. This has led to a weight reduction in the industry – up to 35 per cent and 85 per cent carbon reduction over a 30-year period. Arratia concluded

that the industry perhaps needs to be a little more assertive in promoting the metal package over other packaging forms. This led him to inform the floor of his role as chair for the consumer campaign ‘Every Can Counts’.

Rina Sond, commercial partner at Longmores Solicitors, gave an overview of the potential legal implications that Brexit may have on the UK aer-osols sector. This included assessing the following: identify risks, identitfying important customers and suppliers, reviewing your contracts, assessing work-force, sustainability and costs as a result of Brexit.

However, Sond did outline how companies can make the most of Brexit, including expanding trading activities to other non EU countries, a hard Brexit equalling trade with other countries, upskill-ing the existing workforce and a weak pound, which means exports have the potential to flourish.

Chris Hayward, head of UK business develop-ment at Kantar World Panel, provided an inter-esting insight into the consumer end of the chain. Hayward has observed the increased move into premiumisation. Consumers give a product a maxi-mum of six seconds before choosing a product – so it ‘s important to give me more reasons to buy and that ‘premium’ appeal has gravitas for consumers.

Hayward also commented how 2017 was the year of sugar and now 2018 is the year of plastic, for obvious reasons due to the negativity in the press. He also believes there is potential for growth in the budget supermarket sphere, where he predicts that in the UK, Aldi and Lidl’s share will grow further. Indeed, their share has grown from four per cent in 2008 to 13.1 per cent in 2018.

The event finished with a UK regulatory update from Paul Jackson, technical director at BAMA. He updated the floor on aerosol regulation, particularly in regards to DRS. You can read more about this on page 31. CT

reasons why cans in Russia are usually not included into this category.

In September 2018, Russian non-government quality monitoring agency Roskachestvo conduct-ed an investigation among the main brands of fish cans in the domestic market. It turned out that in addition to fraud, when some companies were found using less valuable fish species, instead of those mentioned on the label, up to 30 per cent of all tested cans contained larvae.

Similar results were obtained by Russian state san-itary watchdog Rospotrebnadzor during research on the St. Petersburg’s meat can market. Almost all meat cans were found violating national quality standards, including in terms of the maximum allowable fat content. This means that food was potentially dangerous to the cardiovascular system of consumers.

The demand for canned food has been shrinking in Russia by 2-5 per cent per year since 2014, dragging down demand for metal packaging products, a

research conducted by the Russian analytical agen-cy, Gryphon Expert has shown. The overall value of sales at the canned food market was estimated at Rub400 billion ($6.5 billion) in 2017, and there were strong hopes that this figure would stop falling in 2018 or in 2019.

“Every year Russian customers purchase less meat, fish and fruit cans,” comments Marina Devyatih, senior analyst of GfK Rus. “On the other hand, the domestic demand for canned vegetables and baby canned food remains flat.”

Despite a rather poor economic environment in Russia, there is a general trend that most customers seek to consume healthy food, and there are several

There is no doubt that there is a strong credi-bility crisis between producers and consumers on the Russian canned food market, and it is believed that changing the shape and the way of manufac-turing of metal packaging could be the first step to overcome it.

LEAD-SOLDERED CANS PASS INTO OBLIVION Another problem that raises concerns for Russian customers is the widespread use of lead-soldered cans in the Russian food packaging industry.

“The state monitoring over the threat of a per-son suffering poor health by consuming certain food products is not that strong in our country,” says Alexey Lomachinsky, senior researcher from the All-Russian Research Institute of Canning and Vegetable Drying Industry. “More than half of can plants in Russia manufacture heat-sealed or soldered cans, using solder with 60 per cent lead content. This technology allows a direct con-tact of lead with the product and for this reason it was banned from use in the food industry in all developed countries many years ago,”

Russian scientists and health officials have been repeatedly raising concerns over the presence of lead in canned products.

“It is known that lead is a dangerous can-cer-causing chemical. It is very dangerous to con-sume it with food products, especially to do that regularly. According to the research conducted by the International Agency for Research on Cancer in 2018 Russia has the world’s second highest rate

EASTERN EUROPE

of death from cancer after China. “This is a big problem and on a large scale

as it is associated with the fact that our citizens are exposed to the deadly impact of carcino-gens,” says Natalia Avagimova, Russian oncology specialist.

On the other hand, it is believed that the actual number of lead-soldered cans in Russia is reduc-ing. In particular, unlike some previous research, the one conducted by Roskachestvo in September 2018 found no cans containing lead on the gro-cery shelves. While two decades ago almost all cans in Russia were lead-soldered, now this type of metal packaging is only an attribute to the economy segment.

“There is no statistical data, but the general feeling is that the lead-soldered cans have passed into oblivion in Russia. This is a heritage of the Soviet Union, and under their modernisation programmes almost all can plants replaced the old equipment with the new machines, those that were designed to produce metal packaging in accordance with the global safety standards. This is a general trend and we expect it to continue in the coming years,” says Alexander Ivanov, a member of the Russian Consumer Right Protection Union.

Nevertheless, the market participants believe that there are still around one billion lead-sol-dered cans manufactured in Russia per year.

TRANSPARENT BUSINESSThere are several important trends currently seen in the Russian metal packaging industry that are designed to encourage consumers to buy more cans. In particular, several can makers have responded to the massive fraud in the market-place by starting to produce transparent lids. This is according to Sergey Lutareveich, chairman of the border of the Russia’s major can food manufacturer, Za Rodinu.

“This is not just about changing the cans. This is about using brand new equipment with which it is possible to produce cans with transparent ends, so the customers can see what is inside the can,” Lutareveich explains.

“Previously, there were no cans with transparent lids in Russia, and the food can producers expect these kind of products will be in high demand. Shifting to new production practices will no doubt require some investments into modernisation.

The transparent ends allow customers to asses not only information on the label, but also the colour, shape and other parameters of the actual products. If the customer possesses certain knowl-edge, he could reveal fraud with the naked eye.

In addition, in the market there is a race for the new segment of smaller cans, Lutareveich says. Most cans have sizes of 250g, while there is a

Page 37: CanTech · Koenig & Bauer MetalPrint GmbH T +49 711 699 71-300 service-metalprint@koenig-bauer.com metalprint.koenig-bauer.com When every second counts: We’re online to help you

NOVEMBER 2018 cantechonline.com 37

demand for metal packaging at 110g. “The one who is the first to design and start the

production of canned food in a smaller package would win [the competitive fight at] the mar-ket,” Lutareveich stresses. Several can plants in Kaliningrad Oblast, where Za Rodinu is based, are putting some efforts to begin manufacturing the smaller cans.

“It used to be like ‘I bought a can of 250g, and it was in the fridge for a week; it was used to make sandwiches’. But people don’t buy canned food in this way any longer. Now the demand shifts towards cans of 110g. This is the exact weight that you can buy and eat right away,” Lutareveich explains.

Lutareveich also notes that the important factor for canned food manufacturers would be the price of the small cans. He expresses confidence that it would not incur any increase in costs across the supply chain.

“For several decades in Soviet Union and in modern Russia, the customers were only accus-tomed to round-corner cans of the standard size,” comments a spokesperson from a Russian canned food industry who wishes to not be named. “Now everything that differs from that standard is con-sidered a premium product. This includes square cans, various cans with the narrowed lids, and cans with the non-conventional size,” he adds.

HELPING HAND FROM BALLFor the first time ever, the Russian government has considered some measures aimed at sup-porting the consumer demand for the metal

packaging industry. Russia’s Industry and Trade Ministry has sought to allow sales of beer and light alcoholic beverages in metal packaging all over the country, according to a draft decree post-ed by the Ministry in early October 2018.

The ultimate goal of the project is to boost the domestic demand for aluminium, in order to throw a helping hand to Russian aluminium giant Rusal that was subjected to tough sanctions by the US’ President Trump’s administration for the alleged involvement of its owner in ‘malign activities’ in several countries, including allegedly meddling in the 2016 US presidential election.

The measure, if approved, would support the business of three can plants operated by Ball in Russia. Rusal is selling its aluminium mainly to Ball, which fabricates metal packaging for the Russian biggest beer producers. When the com-plete ban on selling alcohol beverages in Russia was introduced several years ago, it reduced the overall sales of beer by about 20 per cent, the Russian State Statistical Service estimates.

Russian newspaper Kommersant estimates that Ball had designed production capacities to man-ufacture 3.9 billion aluminium beer cans per year. However, the capacity utilisation factor of the company’s production facilities was rather low, and to some extent this was associated with the trade restriction on selling beer in night hours introduced by the Russian government, Kommersant says. The Ministry promised some package of supportive measures was in the pipe-line, and further steps aimed to boost the demand for aluminium cans may be put in place. CT

continually increase their creative scope through printability and print finishes.

VIBRANT PRINT FINISHES Jan Paul Penning is the department’s principal scientist, who has been involved in the company’s research behind printability and finishes for over 15 years, including the development of Protact, Tata Steel’s specialist laminated steel. He says:

“Protact has a three-layer polymer coating, which eliminates the need for any lacquering stages, sim-plifying the production line for can makers. It is also this polymer coating that provides a perfect

Can makers are constantly looking for ways to improve shelf appeal through new innovations and designs.

This is also a consideration for can-makers’ clients – retailers, brand owners, buyers and packaging designers – how can they utilise the properties of metal to create eye-catching pack-aging that simply jumps into consumer shopping baskets?

The Tata Steel research and development (R&D) department, based in IJmuiden, The Netherlands, has dedicated time and resources into the develop-ment of the company’s packaging steels, looking to

printing base. The outermost layer is polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which has a high surface energy and ink applied to the surface via any process stays in place.

“On some surfaces, inks tend to run or spread into unwanted areas because of much lower surface energy. If you’ve ever tried writing on some plastic carrier bags with a marker pen, you’ll remember that the ink can be removed very easily. On the other hand, due to the high surface energy, printing on Protact’s PET outer layer means that the inks will not run and will stay firmly put exactly where they are supposed to be.”

As well as ensuring a crisp finish, packaging designers and can makers alike are on a constant quest for bright, colourful designs that really make their mark on a busy shelf instore. It’s a gauntlet that DS Containers, the only two-piece aerosol can manufacturer globally, has tackled head on.

“Protact allows us to create an outstanding two-piece aerosol can, with a vibrant ‘photoreal’ finish while offering maximum flexibility to cus-tomers through shorter lead times on aerosol can production,” says Matt Kuehn, vice president – sales, marketing and technical support.

DS Containers uses dry offset printing, which is applied straight onto an ultra-white Protact can, one of five colours in the Protact palette. This is a mid-stream process, where the can is already in its cylindrical shape and the ink is applied to the surface comprising up to eight different colours at a time. The company can achieve a photoreal fin-ish with its laser-engraved printing plates and with white Protact as the base, the printed colours really stand out helping to catch the consumer’s eye.

COLOURED PROTACT Developing coloured Protact also falls under the remit of Jan Paul and the R&D department: “Protact is currently available in five colours – clear, blue, gold, black and white – offering can makers greater creative scope,” he says. “In manufacturing, can makers are also able to use different colours on each side of a can. For example, clear Protact might be applied on the outer side of a food can whilst white Protact is seen on the inner side. Yellow sweetcorn really pops against the inner white colour. Gold on the other hand, has been used on the inside of beer cans, giving lager a brilliant shine.

“Achieving coloured Protact is quite different to mixing ordinary paint. The colour pigment is actually added to the middle layer of Protact’s three-layer polymer coating, which also consists of an adhesion and outer surface layer.

“Before being launched on the market, we test how the colourisation performs under a number of processes found on a ‘normal’ canning line, for example does the shade change once the can

is drawn or is it altered following the sterilisation process or cleaning cycle?

“We can also learn from our R&D colleagues in other sectors. Coloured steels used in construction, for instance, are tested for UV exposure and we build all these learnings into our own ‘recipes’ for Protact colourisation.”

By using coloured Protact packaging steel, can makers as well as brand owners and designers, have greater options for creating unique packaging designs. Black Protact has even been used by craft beer brewers to design distinctive and trend-setting beverage cans.

IMAGINATIVE INKS There are now a number of imaginative print finishes available to can makers, as recently highlighted in Worldsteel’s ‘Vote with your mouth’ campaign, which focusses on the benefits steel brings to beverage can manufacturers. In particu-lar, thermochromic inks can change colour in different temperatures.

The technology is quite simple, two temperature sen-sitive inks show up at the same time when the can is cold, but since one ink is col-ourless at room temperature, it is invisible when the can isn’t chilled. These inks offer an interactive experience for consumers before, during and after consumption – no more lukewarm beers, now the packaging will tell you when it’s ready.

You only have to look at the packs entered as part of the ‘metal pack of the year’ category at the UK Packaging Awards to see the variety, quality and cre-ativity from can makers; designs that hold their own on supermarket shelves. Long may the innovation continue. CT

around 700 million to 800 million cans, according to TCMAP. These figures include about 200 million EOE 202 cans, while the rest are regular 202 cans. Most sardine cans are decorated with printed paper labels.

Most locally produced canned sardines are sold in the Philippines, where canned sardines form an essential part of many families’ staple diet and are consumed with rice.

In addition to their reasonable price, canned sardines have the advantage of strong protective packaging that ensures safe transport and storage for lower income consumers living in provincial and

After recording a single digit increase in 2017, based on Customs Department tinplate and TFS import figures, tin can production is likely to show slower

growth this year due to little anticipated change in the important domestic fisheries catch. Sardine cans are the largest tinplate can category produced in the Philippines, along with cans for tuna, salmon and other seafood, cooked meat cans, fruit and vegetable cans, and infant formula cans.

“I think total tin can production will be flat for 2018 as sardine companies announced they didn’t expect a lot of catch, and sardines are the biggest food item canned in the Philippines,” says Albert Leong, president of Reliable Industries and recent-ly appointed president of the Tin Can Makers Association of the Philippines Inc. (TCMAP). “The fish canning business is very competitive in the Philippines; this is maybe a one billion a year fish can market.”

Steel can production has grown at a single digit pace in recent years to meet increased demand for sanitary food cans and three-piece beverage cans that are filled for local sale and export. However, demand for tinplate general cans has remained stable due to competition from plastic containers.

“Sardines are the largest canned goods in the Philippines. The fishing season runs from March to October, while from November to February there is a fishing ban to allow young fish to grow,” Leong explains. “Sardines from the Philippines’ waters are caught around Zamboanga in the south. Fish packers here also import sardines from India and China for canning.”

Depending on the size of the country’s annual fish catch, demand for 202 sardine cans averages

rural areas. However, fish catch is important. “In the last two years, the fish catch is quite

low, so some fish canners are importing some supplies,” Leong says. “For sardines, Zamboanga in Mindanao is the biggest canning centre, while for tuna it’s General Santos in Mindanao.”

Demand for meat cans is growing in the Philippines, as local meat packers capture a grow-ing share of the imported canned meat market.

“Canned corned beef and pork luncheon meat are growing little by little,” Leong says. “The gov-ernment has imposed higher tariffs on imported meat, so local companies have an opportunity to sell their products because of the higher taxes.

“This started two years ago. Most meat can-ning is in the metro Manila area. The corned beef is imported for canning, while the pork luncheon meat is produced locally.”

Consumption of canned condensed and evaporated milk is also growing, providing local producers with another opportunity to take more imported product market share.

Noting that 300 x 314 cans are used for con-densed milk, while 300 x 407 cans are used to pack evaporated milk, Leong adds: “Condensed milk is a big market here. A lot is imported from Malaysia, but now our local Alaska and Snow Mountain are expanding their condensed milk and evaporated milk production; there is also a filling company in Cebu that produces only condensed milk.

“There’s still a lot of imported condensed and evaporated milk, we can replace this with our local processed milk in cans.”

PHILIPPINES

Both canned condensed and evaporated milk experience seasonal demand in the Philippines.

“Condensed milk is popular for the Christmas season from November to January,” Leong explains. “While in summer it’s evaporated milk as people eat our traditional halo-halo ice cream and toppings dessert with evaporated milk.

“At Christmas, a lot of condensed milk is used; we Filipinos celebrate Christmas for three weeks in December, so a lot of condensed milk is used.”

Meanwhile, tinplate import figures are expect-ed to have been stable over the past year when the Customs Department releases official figures for 2018. In 2017, tin can makers imported about 160,000mt of tinplate and TFS, 3.2 per cent more than imports totalling 155,000mt recorded the previous year.

CONSUMER CHANGESThe Philippines’ population, which now numbers 105 million people, is the fastest growing in Southeast Asia and is helping raise demand for canned products.

Consumer purchasing power continues to grow, partly driven by the rising population and by remittances from overseas workers which is a very big factor supporting the Philippines’ economic development as more people decide to work abroad. However, even though household income and consumer spending continues to grow, competition from plastic packaging remains the main threat to tin can industry.

“The problem is that some cans are switching to plastic containers. For example, cookie cans

Page 45: CanTech · Koenig & Bauer MetalPrint GmbH T +49 711 699 71-300 service-metalprint@koenig-bauer.com metalprint.koenig-bauer.com When every second counts: We’re online to help you

are 90 per cent plastic now, while paint cans are about 50 per cent plastic,” Leong says. “Paint companies are switching can for water based paints, only oil-based paints and solvents remain in tinplate cans. Cooking oil is also switching to plastic containers.”

Leong’s own can making company, Reliable Industries Inc of Quezon City, adjacent to Manila, has tried various ways to reduce production costs and attract more orders.

Equipped with 10 Soudronic can making lines, the Reliable Industries’ machines are a mixture of high, medium and low speed models. The latest line installed was a 500cpm high speed line com-missioned two years ago that produces three-piece 202 sardine cans.

“We installed our latest line to reduce staffing two years ago. The can market here is tough, so to reduce costs you go high speed. We took the old line out which was rated at 300cpm,” Leong says. “Our company produces different types of cans; sales have been stable over the past year.”

Reliable Industries’ other can making facilities include five single colour Crabtree printers and a two-colour Fuji-Mylander printing line. All the company’s cans have printed bodies with the exception of milk powder and infant formula cans.

As part of efforts to reduce production costs’, Reliable Industries and other TCMAP members have tried using thinner gauge tinplate. Leong remarks that clients often do not want to share the costs of introducing thinner gauge materials.

“The can industry in the Philippines is already a mature industry, so the only way to grow demand is to reduce the tinplate thickness but we are at 0.14mm,” Leong says. “If we go lower then food packers must re-engineer, otherwise there will be a lot of can denting. Europe has been successful as packers have been willing to improve their systems but in the Philippines the packers are hard to convince. They want the can maker to spend money for any improvements.”

A number of TCMAP members tried introducing thinner gauge tinplate several years ago with mixed success.

“Several of us already have tried 0.13mm but it’s hard to get lower than 0.14mm. We tried 0.13mm and there was denting,” Leong says.

“We feel steel mills do not want to produce thinner tinplate as it’s hard to produce and it reduces their tonnage. Tinplate and TFS can pro-duction in the Philippines is of an international standard, Leong notes.

“The tin can industry in the Philippines is com-parable to the US and Europe in standard as our manufacturing equipment has been updated and most comes from Europe,” Leong explains. “The standard of sanitary cans here is comparable to

other countries.” Meanwhile, as part of its role representing

the tin can manufacturing industry, the Tin Can Makers’ Association of the Philippines (TCMAP) monitors the import of tinplate and TFS and chrome coated sheets to ensure that all can makers correctly declare the value of their raw material imports.

Monitoring was introduced some years ago to prevent tin can makers under-declaring their material import costs and underpaying import duties that gave them an unfair advantage over companies correctly declaring their materials import value.

TCMAP pays for Industrial Technical Experts (ITE) to monitor all tinplate and other products like TFS and chrome plated sheets being import-ed. ITE experts are based in Manila International Container Port, also North Harbour and Harbour Centre in Manila which are the main entry points for metal coils.

“Our association was established to repre-sent our industry if there is a problem as the government talks to us as a group about tinplate import tariffs and other issues,” Leong con-cludes. “We meet quarterly; we are an associated member of the Federation of Philippines Industry. Now there are no issues with the government, the last issue was the metal coil import tax.” CT

Kahlúa elevates espresso martiniwith Ardagh nitro cansKahlúa are using Ardagh’s nitro cans for its new espresso martini ‘to go’ drink. The alcohol brand uses a 250ml slim nitro can to provide consumers a velvety smooth espresso martini infused with nitrogen.

“It features a fixed widget charged with nitrogen, which delivers a distinct sound upon activation and generates a stunning cascad-ing effect that ultimately tops off the bever-age with a crema,” said Adriana Escobar, product manager at Ardagh Metal Beverage.

The RTD (ready-to-drink) alcoholic beverage category is experiencing consistent growth, mainly driven by premiumisation and con-venience. The use of cans is also gaining popularity as it is universally recognised for its protective qualities, versatility and environmental credentials.

“Espresso martini is a classic drink, known and enjoyed worldwide for decades. Consumers will not need an espresso machine nor a shaker for this one, making this nitro drink and its unrivalled features accessible to a wider market by using a ‘to go’ format.

Dunkin’ Donuts introduces first canned coffee

Dunkin’ Donuts has launched Shot in the Dark coffee espresso blend, and the brand’s first-ever coffee beverage served in a can. Manufactured and distributed by The Coca-Cola Co, Shot in the Dark combines Dunkin’s coffee with espresso.

Served in a special slim can, Shot in the Dark delivers Dunkin’ Donuts’ coffee with a touch of cream and sugar, combined with espresso. The can comes in three flavours: Caramel, Mocha and Vanilla. The coffee can be found in selected retail locations in the

US, and its availability will continue to expand through 2019, the company said.

“Our fans have loved our ready-to-drink iced coffees as a great way to power through their day with Dunkin’ anytime and anywhere,” said Brian Gilbert, Dunkin’ Donuts vice president of retail business development. “Now, for the coffee-loving consumers who want something a little bolder than a traditional cup of coffee, but not as strong as a shot of espresso, our Shot in the Dark creates an exciting and energising new option when on-the-go.”

Now you can enjoy all that pleasure wherever you are, thanks to the power of nitro cans,” said Romina Mariano, global brand manager of Kahlúa.

The product is currently available in Europe and Australia.

AB InBev has announced the launch of a new packaging design for UK alcohol brand, Stella Artois. The new look is a traditional yet modern representation of the Stella Artois brand, which ‘aims to champion its proud her-itage while still looking forward to the future’.

The updated branding was developed in partnership with global brand design agen-cy Jones Knowles Ritchie, and includes a redrawn logo adapted from its original histor-ic form. Texture has been added to the can in the form of ‘rays’ which draw attention to the central emblem, with a matte finish being added from early 2019 next year.

Stella Artois conducted research with con-sumer preference in mind, which revealed that versus the current pack visuals, the new design drove statistically significant uplifts in perceptions of being ‘modern, sophisticated’ alongside a statistically significant lift in shelf stand out.

Alexis Berger, marketing director for Stella Artois Europe, commented: “Design is abso-lutely integral for any brand and as a brewer with 600 years’ heritage we do not take redesigns lightly. We are incredibly proud of the new direction the brand aesthetic is tak-ing, highlighting our Belgian heritage but also modernising Stella Artois to lead consumers’ expectations of premium.

“We’re confident this refreshed design will stand out on shelves and highlight the qualities of Stella Artois which make us the UK’s favourite alcohol brand.” The refreshed design will begin to feature across all Stella Artois packs now and on Stella Artois 4% later in the year.

Canovation introduce CanResealThe CanReseal is said to be the first fastening system that is made from the same material as the can end since the Fraze Rivet.

The CanReseal makes this claim while not significantly affecting any aspect of existing can manufacturing, filling and distribution logistics or economics.

Best described as a socketed can end with threads, the CanReseal is just a standard can end that has been drawn deep enough to include threads on the inside. The focus of the development was to endow resealablility on high volume bever-age cans, but this fastening system may have applications far beyond resealable cans.

Brexit sweet tins witness soaring pre-order demandUK-based Simpkins travel sweets has con-firmed a deal with Penguin Books for a tongue-in-cheek range of licensed Ladybird Book travel tins, which are due to hit shelves in October 2018.

Classic artwork from the books, paired with a cheeky twist, will ensure these will be a pick up and most certainly keep, collectors range of tins.

The company said: “So far we have many pre-orders for these lines and with the current political climate, the Brexit tin is in hot demand.”

Since 1921 Simpkins have been manufac-turing and exporting to over 50 countries all natural gluten free confections primarily for the pharmacy and travel retail sectors. All products are still manufactured to the found-er’s recipes and ingredients. Now run by the fourth generation, business is focused on developing the Worlds original travel tin rang-es, botanical ranges, sugar free confections and pharmacy lines, as well as gifting.

A sideways look at the world of can making

This edition of Can Man takes on a slightly different narrative, as I recently learnt of the sad news

of the passing of William ‘Bill’ Coors, the chairman of the Adolph Coors Company. Coors was the grandson of Adolph Coors and followed him into the family business.

In sporting terms, Bill certainly had a fine innings, passing away at the grand old age of 102. Please forgive me a little indulgence this month, as we touch upon his life a little.

As a 65-year veteran of the beer indus-try, he was chairman of Coors from 1959 to 2000, and helped the company become one of the largest brewers globally. The aluminium can industry should be forever grateful, as Bill was instrumental in cap-turing the idea of an aluminium can as a packaging container for beer.

According to Coors, this captured his interest for two reasons: “Aluminium cans could be recycled, and they didn’t have a welded seam, which made them easier to sterilise.”

There has been plenty written about Mr Coors over the years, but my favourite quote suggests he was a visionary, with a modest touch too: “Would the aluminium

can have ever arrived without me? Of course, its advent was inevitable. All I did was hurry it along.”

At the time, Bill was mocked for his idea as a ‘useless’ technology. This included the aluminium industry too – how wrong they were!

Indeed, the multinational breweries of today could learn a thing or two from old Bill Coors. Back in 1959, the release of the can led to one of the most successful recycling programmes in the US— Cash for Cans, in which Coors offered a penny for each can’s return to the brewery. Recycling indeed isn’t a novel process and has been around for over 50 years. That is something that certainly resonates

We have perhaps become fixed on the concept of recycling and sustainability over the last decade, and the history of our industry being ethically minded for many years isn’t something I believe the majority of consumers are aware of. Perhaps this is something we as an industry can be a little more proactive on. Use our history to our advantage.

I’ll leave you with the fine words of

Remembering Bill

current president and CEO of Molton Coors, Mark Hunter: “Our company stands on the shoulders of giants like Bill Coors. His dedication, hard work and ingenuity helped shape not only our company, but the entire beer industry.”

Coors remained an official beer taste tester until his 100th birthday – what a life indeed! May you rest in peace Bill, the founder of the aluminium can beverage can. CT
