The story of the Canterville Ghost takes place in an old Englishcountry house, Canterville Chase, which has all the accoutrements ofa traditional haunted house. Descriptions of the wainscoting, thelibrary panelled in black oak, and the armour in the hallwaycharacterize the Gothicsetting and help Wilde clash the Old Worldwith the New. Typical of the style of the English Decadents,[citationneeded]the Gothic atmosphere reveals the authors fascination withthe macabre. Yet he mixes the macabre with comedy, juxtaposingdevices from traditional English ghost stories such as creakingfloorboards, clanking chains, and ancient prophecies with symbols ofmodern American consumerism. Wildes Gothic setting helpsemphasize the contrast between culturessetting modernAmericans in what could arguably be a classic symbol of Britishhistoryand underscores the "modern" thinking of the house'smismatched residents.

looked really sad. I am so sorry for you, she said, but my brothers are

going back to Eton tomorrow, and then, if you behaveyourself, no one will annoy you. Mrs Umney told us thatyou had killed your wife. Well, I quite admit it, said theghost, but my wife was not very nice.and I don't think itwas very nice of her brothers to starve me to death.B/WYouare much nicer than the rest of your rude, dishonestfamily

Stop! cried Virginia, itis you who are rude, andas for dishonesty, you stole the paints out of mybox to renew that ridiculous blood-stain in the

library. .the ghost cried; I am so unhappy andI really don't know what to do. I want to go tosleep. Well, I know a place where I could sleep it's the Garden of Death, the churchyard. But only

if you weep for me and my sins and pray with mefor my soul, the Angel of Death will have mercy onme

In this chapter the ghost is shown as poor anddisturbed one who is annoyed by all the rudebehaviors he has to bear. NO doubt that he boldly

admits that he killed his wifebut he aslo thinkthat her brothers have not done a right deed bystarving him to death. Also this point is raised thatthe ghost used Virginias paints to renew thatblood stain everytime. Inspite of everythingVirginia shows a kind attitude towards the ghostand is not afraid of him unlike others.
