Title : Introduction to upper case ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’

Learning Outcomes :

By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to :

Duration : 1 hour

Teaching aids : flash card, worksheet, realia (letters of the alphabet)

Set Induction

1. Teacher reinforces lower case letters by playing the alphabet song higlighting lower case letters.2. Teacher introduces the upper case letters by playing the following

CD: (CD: English Language Year 1-1 (a): Unit 2 and 3)

Class, listen to the CD carefully. Today we are going to learn ‘big’ letters. ‘Big’ letters are also called upper case /capital letters.

Step 1

1. Teacher gets pupils to view the way the alphabets are written. (Introduce one letter at a time.)2. Get pupils to trace the letters on their friend’s back/using

sand/flour.

Look at the blackboard, see how I write, we call this ‘A’. It is a big ‘A’

For the letter ‘B’, you need to do this. First draw a line and then two small half circles. Now follow me.

Now, we are going to write the letter ‘C’’. You need to do this.

Can we try writing the letters together.

Step 2

1. Teacher distributes a blank paper/miniature blackboard (slate). 2. Teacher calls out the letters and gets pupils to write the letters e.g. ‘A’ , ‘B’, ‘C’. 3. Teacher gets pupils to sound out the letters.

I’m going to give you a piece of paper/miniature blackboard. When I say a letter you have to write it out.

e.g. If I say ‘A” you have to write out ‘A’. Good now tell me what letter this is.

Step 3

1. Teacher distributes worksheets 1A, 1B and 1C. 2. Pupils trace the letters introduced for the day.

Now, that you know how to write ‘A’, ‘B’ , ‘C’, I am going to ask you to practice writing them out.

Once you have finished, please pass up your work.

Consolidation

1. Teacher reinforces what was taught by showing pupils a composite picture embedded with letters taught for the day. (Refer to worksheet 1 D)

Set Induction

1. Show pupils letters learnt the day before.2. Get pupils to say the letters aloud.3. Teacher shows pupils the order they come in e.g A, B, C.

Hello! everyone. How are you today? Good! Let’s see what we have learnt yesterday. Can you tell me what letter this is?

Step 1

1. Introduce the next 3- 5 letters. 2. Teacher demonstrates how these letters are written D, E and F.

3. Teacher gets pupils to form the letters using play dough/sand.Today we are going to learn more ‘big’ letters.

What do we call big letters? Yes, we call them capital letters. Now, see how I write these letters. You follow me using the

dough/sand on your table.Step 2

1. Teacher distributes figurines of the letters introduced. 2. Teacher gets pupils to show her the letter she calls out.

3. Teacher gets pupils to sound out the letters.

I’m going to give you some capital letters. When I say a letter you have to show it to me.

e.g. If I say ‘D’ you have to pick it up and show it to me. Good now tell me what letter this is.

1. Teacher distributes worksheets 2A, 2B and 2C. 2. Pupils trace the letters introduced for the day.

Now, that you know how to write ‘D’, ‘E’ , ‘F’, I’m going to ask you to practice writing them out.

1. Teacher plays a game with the pupils.2. Teacher calls out two pupils.3. The letters introduced are written at random on the board.4. Teacher gets pupils to ‘hit’ the letter called out, using a ‘paper

stick’.5. Pupils are also required to shout out the letter they ‘hit’.

We are going to play a game. I have written the letters we have learnt on the board. I want two of you to come in front. Now, hold this stick. When I call out a letter the first person who ‘hits’ it and

calls out the letter is the winner. Now, let’s play the game. Good luck!

Lesson 3

Title: Introduction to upper case ‘G’, ‘H’ and ‘I’

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

i. master letters of the alphabet. (G, H, I )ii. write letters of the alphabet in clear and legible print:

- upper case (capital letters). iii. listen to and follow simple instructions.iv. rearrange the letters of the alphabet in the correct order.

Duration : 1 hour

Teaching aids : flash card, sticks, straw, templates of alphabets, worksheet, sand paper letters, plasticine.

Set Induction

1. Teachers calls out two pupils.2. Teacher blind folds the pupils.3. Teacher gets pupils to recognise letters taught the day before by tracing the sand paper letters.4. Pupils call out the letters identified.

I hope all of you are feeling good today. Let’s begin our lesson by playing a game. Now, can two of you come in front. I’m going to blind fold you. I want you to feel the letter and tell me what it is. Sorry, it’s wrong. Try again.
