Coastal Liberia is a land abundant in waterways, many of which are set against a rich backdrop of rain forest-covered vistas. With eight deserted white-sand Atlantic beaches, nine rivers teeming with unique flora and fauna, and two major lakes, visitors will undoubtedly fall in love with Liberia's tranquil, natural scenery.

Known for its diverse wildlife, Liberia's ecosystem is one of the most expansive and unique in the region. With nearly 2,000 species of mammal, bird, reptile, amphibian, and insect groups, animals such as forest elephants, antelope, chimpanzees and the pygmy hippopotamus, unique only to Liberia, draw eco-tourists to the country.

One of Liberia's 235 arboreal species, the palm tree is one of the most lucrative. Producing a fruit from which common products and foods such as soap, personal care products, cooking oil, and even biofuels can be made, the palm tree is an asset to Liberia. Also a tropical aesthetic, palm trees dot the coastline, adding to the exotic appeal of the country.

Historically, the Liberian economy and people have depended heavily on rubber farms, from which a wide range of household and industrial products are made and sold globally. Rubber trees, tapped by workers who turn natural rubber to usable latex, are an invaluable part of Liberia's economic sustainability.

During the 14-year civil war in Liberia, thousands of children were orphaned, while others were forced to become soldiers. Since then, countless orphanages have emerged around the country. Africa's first female president, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, is determined to bring education back to the forefront to give Liberia's many orphans a brighter future.

A favorite pastime for Liberians from all walks of life, soccer—referred to as football—is the sport of choice over which many Liberians bond and are entertained by. Liberia's official team, the Lone Star, has produced several soccer phenoms who have been recognized throughout the world as some of the best players ever to grace the sport.
