Welcome to our Carols by Candlelight concert. We’re delighted to be singing in

the beautiful chapel of Clifton College..

We look forward to more memorable concerts in 20 1 1 . After our performance of Tallis’

motet for 40 voices, Spem in alium, last year many people asked us to sing it again,

so we’ll be including it in our Sense of the Divine concert on 13th February. We’ll also be

performing Bach’s mighty setting of the St Matthew Passion on 9th April.

I hope you enjoy tonight’s concert. Have a peaceful

Christmas and a happy New Year.

Quem pastores laudavere Michael Praetorius

Nova! Nova! Bob Chilcott

O magnum mysterium Jaako MäntyjärviO magnum mysterium et admirabile sacramentum ut animalia viderent Dominum natum jacentem in praesepio. Beata Virgo cujus viscera meruerunt portare Dominum Christum. Alleluia.

O great wonder and miraculous sacrament: that the beasts of the field see the Lord, new-born and lying in a manger. Blessed is the Virgin whose womb was worthy to bear the Lord Jesus Christ. Alleluia.

1. Quem pastores laudavere, quibus angeli dixere, absit vobis jam timere, natus est rex gloriæ.

Nunc angelorum gloria hominibusResplenduit in mundoNovi partus gaudia virgo Mater produxit,Et Sol verus in tenebris illuxit.Christus natus hodie ex virgineSine virili semine est natus Rex.

2. Ad quem reges ambulabant, aurum, thus, myrrham portabant, immolabant hæc sincere Leoni victoriæ.

Culpae datur hodie remissio Laetetur homo reus.

Glory to Christ whom the shepherds praise, the shepherds to whom the angel said,‘Be not afraid, the King of Glory is born’.

Now the glory of the angelshas shone forth to men on earth:the Virgin Mother has newly given birth and brought joy,and the true sun has lightened the darkness.Christ is born today of a Virgin:a King is born without earthly father.

Glory to Christ to whom the wise men camebringing gold, frankincense and myrrh;they offered these gifts with true heart to the Lion of Judah.

Today remission of our sins is granted:let guilty mankind rejoice.Light has shone from heaven, peace has now been restoredshe who bore the Saviour has remained sinless.Christ is born today of a Virgin: a King is born without earthly father.

To Christ the King, Son of God,Given to us through Mary, let praise, honour and gloryworthily and truly resound.

The great name of the Lord is Emmanuel, which means: God with us.Let us rejoice in the salvation of the Redeemer Lord;this is the day and the year of rejoicing.Children, raise your voices together and make music, sing with reverent voice and clap your hands.

Refrain: ‘Riu, riu, chiu’ cried the shepherd by the riverside. God kept the wolf [Satan] away from our lamb [the Virgin Mary].

1. The raging wolf wanted to bite her, but the more powerful God knew how to protect her. He wanted to make her incapable of sin, and this Virgin did not even have original sin.

2. He who is born a great King, Christ the Patriarch clothed in human flesh. He has redeemed us by making himself a child: although he is immortal he made himself mortal.

3. Many prophecies have foretold it: and in our time we have seen it fulfilled. We see God in human form here on earth, and man raised to heaven because God loved him.

Hodie Christus natus est: Alleluia.Hodie Salvator apparuit: Alleluia. Hodie in terra canunt Angeli; laetantur Archangeli: Alleluia.Hodie exultant justi, dicentes:Gloria in excelsis Deo. Alleluia.

This day Christ is born: Alleluia. This day the Saviour reveals himself: Alleluiathis day on earth angels sing and archangels rejoice: Alleluia. This day the righteous exult, saying:Glory be to God in the highest. Alleluia.

1. Silent night, holy night,All is calm, all is bright.Round yon Virgin Mother and Child, Holy infant so tender and mild,Sleep in heavenly peace, sleep in heavenly peace.

2. Silent night, holy night,Shepherds quake at the sight.Glories stream from heaven afar,Heav’nly hosts sing Alleluia;Christ the Saviour is born, Christ the Saviour is born.

3. Silent night, holy night,Son of God, love’s pure light.Radiant beams from Thy holy face,With the dawn of redeeming grace.Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth, Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth.

With a repertoire of over 300 separate pieces, ranging from two-minute anthems to whole works such as Bach’s St Matthew Passion and Duke Ellington’s Sacred Concert, the choir has sung music from plainsong and Renaissance masterpieces to contemporary music, jazz and spirituals in an array of different languages

including Czech, Polish, Russian, Latin, Aztec, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Quechua, Tagalog, Welsh and Icelandic. The choir has commissioned new works from Philip Moore and Roxanna Panufnik.

Plans for 2011 include a performance of Tallis’ 40-part motet Spem in alium on Sunday 13th February (details on back cover) and Bach’s St Matthew Passion on Saturday 9th April, both in St George’s Bristol.

OLIVER CONDY orGAn

In 1997, as part of an English and French degree at Cardiff University, he returned to Paris where he continued studying the organ with Mme Landale while teaching English at Lycée

Montaigne. The year culminated in him being awarded a ‘Premier Prix’. After graduating in 2000, Oliver completed an MA in organ performance studies at Cardiff University, studying under the renowned Bach scholar Peter Williams. Oliver has been the editor of BBC Music Magazine since 2004 before which he was deputy editor of Classic FM Magazine.

RICHARD JOHNSON orGAnRichard Johnson combines a professional career as a patent attorney with a busy schedule of musical activities.
