Things are heating up at Casa! I hope you all had the chance to enjoy the wonderful dance numbers our staff performed during Casa’s Got Talent! Thank you for all your cheers and votes! Many of you told me “I wish this happened every week!” I’m really proud of the Casa Staff. On top of the excellent day-to-day service they provide, they’re very talented in a lot of other ways. The Casa Sandoval LifeBy Shoshi

Once, to even think of a senior residence put a trembling in my heart. But today I am reassured and feeling terribly grateful to have found this community.

The first experience I had was discovering the Ice Cream Social. I noticed that there were those with walkers and others with wheelchairs. But everyone seemed to put up bravely with their role in life.

The dining room is kindly run, with like folks assigned to the same table.

Then there’s housekeeping who fight the dust and dreck and help keep our dirty linens properly washed and folded, our bed made in lovely smelling clean sheets. Then there are the magnificent ladies who give caring showers, dispense medications, and deliver sick trays.

All done with love.

FRANK DALTONFRANK MAKES FRIENDS AS FAST AS THEY COME. HE’S A NAVY VETERAN WHO KEEPS HIMSELF IN SHAPE. AT ONE TIME, HE USED TO RIDE HIS BIKE THROUGH THE HILLS OF PORTOLA VALLEY. FRANK HAS A HANDSHAKE THAT MEANS BUSINESS BUT A FRIENDLY SPIRIT THAT MAKES YOU FEEL AT HOME.

DORA FONGDORA’S ONE OF THE MOST ENERGETIC RESIDENTS AT CASA. SHE TAKES PART IN NEARLY EVERY ACTIVITY AND IS GREAT AT RUSTLING UP NEW FOLKS TO JOIN HER GROUP. TO FIND DORA, JUST CHECK TODAY’S SCHEDULE - CHANCES ARE, SHE’S INVOLVED IN EVERYTHING ON THE LIST.

VICTOR JACKSON

VICTOR HAS BOUNCED BACK FROM A RECENT INJURY AND IS PLANNING TO RETURN TO THE LOCAL GOLF COURSE. HE MAINTAINS HIS CONDITIONING EACH DAY ON THE TREADMILL AND IS ALWAYS READY AND WILLING TO PARTICIPATE WHENEVER WE CALL FOR A DANCE ON THE PATIO.

EUROPEAN CUISINE MEETS CASA (cont.)

Chef Claude was born into a family line of chefs; his father and grandfather were professionals and it stood to reason that Claude would begin following suit at the age of 8. When he was ready to set out on his own, Claude took an apprentice’s role which, in Europe, consists of eight months practice followed by four months working in a hotel. The reward for that grueling internship is the green light to work in any restaurant in Europe. Any chef who has paid this price has a job for life. Along the way, Claude rose to the top of the ranks, working in world-class venues such as the Ritz Paris, The Restaurant at St. Moritz, the Shadow Grand in Stockholm, and the Four Seasons in Berlin.

Chef Claude has also made his mark in the United States, with stops at the prestigious Mark Hopkins in San Francisco, the highly exclusive Sharon Heights Country Club in Menlo Park, and with American President Cruise Lines. For nearly a decade, Claude also operated a very successful French cuisine restaurant in Danville.

Chef Claude is confident when he says Casa residents enjoy the best meals of any senior living community. In fact, he doesn’t hesitate to compare the fare here to any of the finest restaurants in San Francisco. He’s very selective with the raw ingredients he receives each morning and creates fresh, healthy, and seasonal dishes that draw rave reviews. All of his meals are made from fresh ingredients - no frozen fish, meats, or bread. Each month Casa hosts a Food Committee meeting and Chef Claude takes the comments to heart. He’s added or subtracted menu items based on feedback from residents. If you ask Chef Claude to name the residents’ favorite meals, the salad bar would top the list. The top seafood meals are salmon, cod, and snapper. Among the other favorites are Chinese stirfry and pasta.

Food brings communities together and here at Casa Sandoval, mealtimes are extra special, largely due to the efforts of our own EuroChef and his dedicated kitchen staff.

Seasons of Life

Skies always bright, that’s what we wish forSun shining, flowers blooming and love

flourishing,That’s our desire.

To better appreciate these days of joy,Life interjects days that are gray with clouds

overheadAnd ill winds to bring discomfort to the mind

and body. But, alas, all things are passing.

Spring follows winter and summer promises warmth and pleasure.

Life is like my garden; it is sometimes overgrown with problems.

But spring blooms appear to erase the gloom.More April buds on the rose bushes than can be

counted. We must savor the good and build up a reserve of

joy.Like making jam of summer berries to tide us

through the winter. The secret we often forget is to keep a watchful

eye for beauty in all the seasons. Jean Rolf

When the 1991 Oakland fires consumed their home of 36 years, Tom and Nevenka “Nancy” Zmarich were invited to stay at Casa Sandoval until things were sorted out. What was supposed to be a temporary stay turned into a long-term venture for Nancy, now in her 23rd year at Casa.

Tom passed away in September 1993 but now, more than two decades after the fire, Nancy is the longest-tenured resident and one of six centenarians at Casa Sandoval. Nancy, the daughter of a cabinet maker, came from Croatia when she was seven years old and grew up in the Oakland area. She met Tom when they were both children and they tied the knot on New Year’s Day 1936. Tom and Nancy would be inseparable for the next 58 years.

The Sound of Music

Tom played sax, clarinet, and violin with Harry Owens at the Royal Hawaiian in Waikiki and she remembers fondly the many cruises they sailed on. Of course, her greatest memories are of her son Tommy, who died of polio at the age of 11, and her two daughters, Carol of Fremont and Nikki of Santa Ana. Nancy is also the proud grandmother of Richelle.

Nancy brings an uplifting spirit and the flair to energize the Casa Main Lounge. Her piano playing prowess brings songs like “I’ll See You in my Dreams” and “Moonlight in Roses” to life. She even penned her own song, “That’s My Honey”, and blesses her Casa friends with her amazing talents.
