Farm rates respite proposedBY CATHERINE WATSON

Land of hope:

Peter White

wants to keep

farming on his

Cranbourne

property.Picture: Rob Carew

FARMERS in the urbangrowth zone would have thebulk of their rates billdeferred under a plan pro-posed by a Casey councillor.

Cr Geoff Ablett said ratebills of up to $85,000 weredriving Casey’s marketgardeners, beef farmers andhorse trainers off the land.

At last week’s councilmeeting, he proposed that thecouncil charge genuine farm-ers a multiple of the averageresidential rate bill.

If the average rate was$1500, he said, farm ratebills might be capped at$10,000, with payment ofthe balance, plus interest, deferred until the land wassold. ‘‘If they have a20-hectare property and soldit for $400,000-$500,000 ahectare to a developer, even ifthey owed the council$300,000 for rates, they’vestill got $7-$8 million tospend.’’

Local Government Minis-ter Jeanette Powell has stated

that councils can impose alower differential rate onfarms outside the UGB butrising rates inside the UGBwere a result of market forcesand councils should notintervene to artificially lowerthem.

Cr Ablett said he had vis-ited about a dozen farms toget a consensus view on waysto keep people farming.

‘‘They do want to be in theUGB. Some have sold todevelopers, some want to sellin the future.

‘‘But for farmers it’s anightmare trying to find$50,000 to pay a rates bill.

‘‘It’s in our own interest toallow them to leave at a timeof their own choosing and tokeep them farming as long aspossible.’’

Councillors voted toinvestigate his proposal.Officers will report back onthe average rate paymentacross all properties in Caseyand how the interest on out-standing rates is calculatedunder the Local GovernmentAct.

Farmers pay the price as land values soar in the growth areas

LONG-time Cranbourne horse trainer RayMcMahon welcomes Cr Geoff Ablett’s proposalto allow farmers inside the urban growthboundary to defer their rates until they sell up.

Mr McMahon faced a $15,000 rates bill afterthe council rezoned his 15-hectare property inThompsons Road, opposite the new MarriottWaters shopping centre, from rural to industrial.

He said that when he approached someone atthe council about the rise, ‘‘he virtually told meto sell up or go and get a loan’’.

Instead, Mr McMahon diversified into cattle totry to raise the money.

‘‘Every year you have to make enough moneyto pay the rates, then you have to try to make a

living. It’s just too hard.’’ He said an elderlyneighbour on a two-hectare block wasstruggling to pay a $5000 rates bill out of herpension.

‘‘She’ll probably have to sell.’’Across the suburb, in Berwick-Clyde Road,

beef farmer Peter White faces an $85,000 ratesbill for his 80-hectare farm, which is included inthe UGB.

With housing estates rapidly approachingfrom the east and west, Mr White’s property isworth between $30 million and $40 million buthe really just wants to keep farming it.

He points out the heritage-listed driveway andthe grand old house.

‘‘We’ve got a beautiful place and we just wantto stay here.’’

Like Cr Ablett, he believes farm rates shouldbe capped at a maximum multiple of the farmrate.

‘‘The average rate is about $1200 and we’repaying about 70 times that.’’

Mr McMahon, who has owned his property formore than 45 years, said most properties wereovervalued.

‘‘The valuations are based on the boom timesand the boom times are gone. Last year adeveloper offered me what the land was worthabout 15 years ago. The prices are back torural values.’’

Re: ‘Tough times’ with 7.5% rates riseThe mayor says that nearly 3 per cent of the rise isdue to external costs over which the council has nocontrol. What’s always the cause of rate rises ispopulation growth. Funding must continually beincreased to pay for all the services needed byswelling numbers of residents. Without a

population plan for Australia, and a mute federalSustainable Population Minister Tony Burke, atleast councils can formulate their own populationpolicies for sustainable numbers.

Trial hoon op gains traction

Hoons hit: Senior Constable Paul Peebles, Sergeant Brett Shenton and Senior

Scott Roberts, all of Greater Dandenong Highway Patrol, are part of the trial HIT.

Picture: Cameron Lucadou-Wells

BY CAMERON LUCADOU-WELLS

POLICE intelligence has seem-ingly beaten hoon brawn in Mel-bourne’s south-east.

With the help of its divisionalintelligence unit, Dandenong andCasey police have hunted downhoon rallies and turned theminto ‘‘car club meets’’ — withimpressive results.

During the six-week operation, offences dived from a high of 108on April 24 to zero over the pastthree weeks.

Some drivers are penalised withmultiple on-the-spot fines for suchoffences as defect notices, speeding and unlicensed driving.Several fines can total more than$1000 — plus possible impoundfees of at least $800.

The model has been formalisedinto a trial hoon investigationteam (HIT) to crack down ondangerous drivers in Casey,Cardinia and Greater Dandenong.

The four male organisers of the

illegal rallies were summoned toDandenong police station to talkto Acting Inspector Steven Wood.

‘‘I told them if someone getskilled the consequences could goback to the organisers,’’ he said.

The organisers were aged intheir late 20s, combining gainfulemployment with their ungainfulnightlife. Even so, the continualfines were starting to hurt. And so,the organisers and police came toan agreement.

‘‘They ring me and ask, ‘Can15-20 of us meet in a car park andlook at each other’s cars?’,’’ ActingInspector Steven Wood said. ‘‘It’sturned into a car club meet.’’

In the past year more than twocars a day have been impoundedin Casey and Cardinia.

Using social media and textmessaging, organisers couldattract up to 200 cars around Mel-bourne at an hour’s notice.

The divisional intelligence unitworked out the likely meetingspots from social media and

Crime Stoppers tip-offs, allowingup to 60 police to plan and swoop.

‘‘You look at [the participants’]Facebook profiles and they seemlike angels. Butter wouldn’t meltin their mouth,’’ Senior SergeantScott Roberts of Greater

Dandenong highway patrol said.‘‘Then you get out there and

they just don’t care. We’ve got tochange their attitude so they knowthe consequences.’’

The HIT will be trialled forthree months.

VicRoads sayssome graffiti ‘OK’IT’S not obscene, it’s not racist, but is it offensive?

That’s the question posed by Casey deputy mayorSam Aziz about tags spray-painted on the Narre War-ren overpass.

Last month, Cr Aziz complained about the graffitiand asked council officers to contact VicRoads toarrange for it to be removed.

At last week’s council meeting, he said he wasshocked to learn the authority had responded that itspolicy was not to remove graffiti unless it was racist orobscene.

‘‘This is a strange bar to set in a city that has a zero-tolerance approach to graffiti and a policy of goingout and removing it.’’

He said graffiti was offensive — and illegal —whether it was racist or not. ‘‘It undermines the stronganti-graffiti policy we’ve instituted in our city.’’

Cr Wayne Smith said the authority was using anexcuse. ‘‘The City of Casey has proved that if youremove graffiti efficiently and quickly it stays away.Graffiti is not public art. It is, quite simply, illegal.’’

Taggers have been busy in the city. They also strucksoon after a fence was erected on the South GippslandHighway, Lynbrook.

Councillors agreed to write to the state governmenturging it to pursue a program of removing graffitifrom state-owned property.

A step towards understanding

Daily challenge: Rachel Woolley struggles to understand why her twins Cooper and

Jake ‘‘melt down’’ in public. Picture: Wayne Hawkins

BY CHAD VAN ESTROP

FOR most people, a trip to Foun-tain Gate shopping centre is seem-ingly mundane but for RachelWoolley it is extremely daunting.

The Narre Warren mother cannever predict how her autistic twinswill react in a public place. Some-times they ‘‘throw themselves on theground and won’t stand up’’, atother times ‘‘they just run off and Idon’t know where they are going’’.Being in public is a ‘‘sensory over-load’’ for the nine year olds.

‘‘It’s like Russian roulette youdon’t know what you will get. I’vehad them go missing on many occa-sions,’’ Ms Woolley said. She finds itdifficult to understand why hertwins, Cooper and Jake, have suchan adverse reaction to public places.

To ease the challenge, MonashUniversity has launched the Step-ping Stones program to help parentsunderstand the behavioural andemotional problems of childrenwith developmental disabilities.

The program includes a series ofwebsites, educational seminars andadvice for parents.

Professor Bruce Tonge of theCentre for Developmental Psychia-try at Monash University said theprogram would educate parents ofchildren aged between two and 10with a developmental disability.

‘‘If parents can understand theirchild’s disability and guide them ithelps the family function bothimmediately and in the long term.’’

Last week, Professor Tongelaunched the My Say survey tobetter understand the gaps insupport for children with a disabil-ity. He said the results would help to‘‘upskill’’ those working in the dis-ability sector.

Ms Woolley hopes the programwill help her understand the emo-tions and behaviour of her twins.

‘‘For me the current behaviouralanalysis programs don’t provideenough insight, I feel like I don’tknow enough about my twins’behaviour.’’

She also hoped the programwould shed light on the gaps inrespite care. ‘‘It can get quite over-whelming for those who work withyoung children with developmentaldisabilities so any sort of assistance

for them would be useful.’’From late this year parents can

access free parenting support for 18months as a part of the SteppingStones program. The My Say surveyis available at mysay.org.au.

Injured migrant’scompo adviceA NIGERIAN-born mother hopes her settle-ment from the state’s road safety body willraise awareness of crash entitlements forothers from migrant backgrounds.

The Narre Warren mother of five recentlyreceived more than $200,000 from the Trans-port Accident Commission after she wasinjured in a motor vehicle accident in 2010.

The 55-year-old required surgery on aninjured right shoulder and later suffered liga-ment damage in her left shoulder.

The woman said the compensation wouldhelp her support her family.

“Until the accident I was working twojobs. After the accident I could no longer dothat, so this compensation will hopefullymake up for that.’’

The woman, who asked not to be named, fears others from migrant backgrounds aremissing out on compensation due to a lack ofawareness of the TAC scheme.

“I worry that there are others like me whowill miss out on the money they need becausethey don’t know how the system works if youare injured in an accident.” Under the schemeanyone injured in a motor vehicle accidentcan claim medical expenses regardless of whois at fault. — Chad Van Estrop

A space for youngBY CAMERON LUCADOU-WELLS

Roar honesty: Daniel Jackson has used his profile

to promote headspace’s Dandenong centre.Picture: Cameron Lucadou-Wells

WRESTLING with Demons on the footballfield recently cost Richmond AFL footballerDaniel Jackson a fine, but he tackled a differ-ent fight in Dandenong last Monday week.

Jackson, with federal Mental Health Min-ister Mark Butler, helped launch a long-awaited headspace mental health centre incentral Dandenong.

It will provide free help and advice toyoung people in Melbourne’s south-east forissues such as bullying, depression, anxietyand relationship problems.

Jackson said such a friendly and invitingspace would be handy for young people —even for himself when he was a budding17-year-old AFL draftee at Carey Grammar.

He remembers silently suffering anxiety, debuting for Richmond while completing hisVCE at Carey in 2004.

‘‘The more I kept it to myself the worse itgot,’’ he said. ‘‘As an AFL footballer, youhave to deal with the high expectations. Tohave people to support you makes a differ-ence.’’ That difference for him came from hisschool’s counsellor.

‘‘headspace is trying to change that [mental

health stigma], to be seen as a good way toseek help,’’ Jackson said.

The luminously green-coloured headspacecentre aims to be a welcoming, free and con-fidential hub for 12-25 year olds.

Each week, about 70 referrals and walk-inclients sit in the comfortable, bright chairsand chat with psychologists, social workersor GPs.

The headspace centre is open Monday-Saturday at 196 Lonsdale Street, Dandenong.Details: 1800 FOR YOU (1800 367 968)or headspace.org.au

Making a difference: Paul enjoys his volunteer work with young people. Picture: Gary Sissons

‘Anyone can make a goodvolunteer; as long as you havea kind heart and willing to giveyour time. Everyone hassomething to offer one way oranother.’ — Paul

The 2012 World Giving Index showsAustralians are the most generous people onEarth. The index, compiled by the Charities

Aid Foundation, shows in that year 75 per centof Australians gave to a good cause, 67 per centwent out of their way to help a stranger and 37per cent volunteered their time in the service ofothers.

This generosity is reflected in 2011 census fig-ures: about 6700 people in Frankston and morethan 3200 on the Mornington Peninsula volun-teered their time to a group or organisation.

Some of them have lent a hand to OzChild, thelongest continuous service tochildren and families in Victoria since the goldrush era of 1851.

The recruitment and training co-ordinatorLisa Jones is responsible for bringing volunteersinto the program, trying to hang on to the ones ithas got and making sure they are trained.

‘‘We have a big turnover of people. We get a lotof students coming in who tend to commit for 12months but also have a lot of people who’ve beenin the program for a long time. One of them hasbeen matched for five years.

“Many are retirees who have finished theircareers and are looking for something fulfillingand have more time to give. So as fast as we getpeople out of the door we are getting them backin, but demand always far exceeds supply.”

OzChild provides family support services, foster care, home-based and residential care, disability services, education support and legaladvice and representation.

Family support programs cover CardiniaShire, Frankston City and the Mornington Penin-sula.

Former funeral director Annie, a volunteerwhose surname cannot be mentioned for privacyreasons, has been with the program for fouryears.

‘‘When I retired I wanted to do somethingwhere I could help someone less fortunate, help-ing to guide them through difficult times in theirlives. It’s rewarding to be with somebody whogives you their trust. They can talk about thingsthat they know won’t go any further,” she says.

For one of Annie’s clients, Susan, that trust iseverything. For the first time in her life, the17-year-old single mother has someone she canrely on.

“I had to look after mum when she was sick, and had to be the adult when I was still a kid,’’Susan says. ‘‘I didn’t have a childhood. I had tolook after everyone else and wasn’t looking aftermyself. The baby was unexpected. I was told Icouldn’t have kids.

“Annie was already there as mum’s mentorwhen I fell pregnant. Dad didn’t approve and kic-ked me out. She was there for me throughout thepregnancy and has always been there for me.She’s helped me so much. I can talk to her aboutanything, and if I didn’t have her, I’d be lost.”

With Annie’s encouragement, Susan hasreturned to study and is hoping to get a builder’s

apprenticeship. “I know now what I want to do.’’In Cardinia Shire, which has a relatively small

population, about a fifth of the residents volun-teer their time. Kathryn, 32, is among them.

“I was studying psychology and wanted to getpractical experience and an understanding of thefamilies I would be working with. I’ve workedwith two families since I started 12 months ago,”the OzChild volunteer says.

‘‘You become emotionally involved to anextent, but you have to have boundaries. I havetwo kids of my own and I think that helps. A lotof families struggle with their kids trying to getthem to do stuff, and getting them into routines isreally frustrating when they are already emo-tional because of their circumstances.

‘‘Everything seems so overwhelming and we

can help them to break it down into small bitsand put things into place to help them graduallymake it better.

“It’s great to see them come from a place wherethey just don’t know what to do, and start to putthings back together. It’s a privilege. I havefriends involved with other organisations andthis is one of the best.’’

While more women volunteer their time, over-all men are not far behind. But generally, they arehappy to put their hand up to help out at a sportsclub but they tend to steer clear of welfare organ-isations such as OzChild.

Peninsula resident Paul, 28, is an exception.Like Kathryn, Paul was looking for an organ-

isation where he could put into practice skills hehad learned while studying counselling and com-munity services.

“I’ve got something to give, so I looked forsomewhere I could be of use. I’ve not seen anyother guys working in this area, and there areonly three guys in my class of 30 looking to workin welfare. But a few of my mates have askedabout it [working with OzChild], and I’m hopingthey’ll come on board.

“Anyone can make a good volunteer; as longas you have a kind heart and willing to give yourtime. Everyone has something to offer one way

or another. You could be just kicking a footballaround, or sitting on the beach having a chat.

“As a volunteer we see a lot more of the hap-pier side of things. We are there to try to makepeople smile, and it’s very rewarding. Whereason the welfare side, they may be coming into asituation that is much more dire. It’s very reward-ing.”

Since October, Paul has been matched withthree teenage boys; two from separate familieswho needed support through sudden changes intheir family circumstance, and a third youngerboy who has had a more permanent relationshipwith his mentor. “A little bit of time can make abig difference in their day,” he says.

Volunteers do not require any specific qualific-ations or experience to join the program. Theymust be aged 18 or over and prepared to committo two-four hours each fortnight for a minimumof 12 months, depending on family needs.

Ms Jones said the support offered depended onspecific needs of the family. This may includeproviding parenting strategies and emotionalsupport, companionship, mentoring, outings, helping to develop household routines and link-ing into the wider community and support net-works. crash was warned by others of the risks he

was taking on the morning he lost control of a

ute, a court heard. Police said that at 5.40am

on January 15 last year Booth lost control of

the ute at 151km/h and crashed into a

concrete power pole in McGregor Road, killing

his friend, Lee Davy, 19. Booth pleaded guilty

Davy’s parents and insisted on attending the

funeral. Judge Christopher Ryan remanded

mayor Brett Owen said he looked forward to

working with the local community to create a

lasting tribute. ‘‘The former kindergarten is a

place of great local significance, having

and being an education centre until its closure

in 2005.’’

On course: Denis Napthine described the

Pakenham Racing Club’s new Tynong facility as

a ‘‘visionary project’’. Picture: Chad Van Estrop.

A $9 million synthetic track will be thecentrepiece of Pakenham Racing Club’s newhome at Tynong.

The synthetic track, set on the inside of the2400-metre grass track, is expected to host16 race meetings after its completion in early2015.

Funding for the track will be divided be-tween Pakenham Racing Club ($4.5 million)and Racing Victoria ($1.5 million).

The state government will contribute$3 million from a pool of unclaimed racingdividends.

Premier Denis Napthine said the synthetictrack, the second in the state and the firstnew track built in Victoria in 40 years, was asignificant investment and an incentive fortrainers to be based at Tynong.

‘‘The synthetic track will be an importantpart of our racing future, particularly whenmeetings need to be transferred,’’ he said.

Wet and muddy conditions won’t stopracing during the winter months on the2000-metre track.

Dr Napthine described the $60 millionTynong facility as ‘‘a visionary project’’ thatwould deliver ‘‘hundreds’’ of jobs . ‘‘This new

synthetic track will be the catalyst for thisdevelopment to become home to a majortraining and racing industry, delivering newand ongoing jobs.’’

It is believed up to 40 race meetings will beheld at the course when fully operational in2014-15.

Heartfelt tunes: Paul Thorn performs at the Hallam Hotel next month.

BY CHAD VAN ESTROP

Paul Thorn’s mentors come from polaropposites.Thorn’s father, a Pentecostal minister in

America’s deep south, and his uncle, a formerpimp, are the driving forces behind his musiccareer.

‘‘I was a young disciple to pimps andpreachers,’’ Thorn exalts in one of his songs.

The 48-year-old singer and songwriter, whowill perform at the Hallam Hotel next month, said his father’s affinity with preaching taughthim how to engage an audience.

‘‘Part of being a minister is that you have keepa crowd entertained and engage them with yourwords. That’s what I try to do,’’ he said.

‘‘When I go out on stage I want the crowd tofeel like we are having a collaboration.’’

Growing up in Tupelo, Mississippi — thebirthplace of Elvis Presley — Thorn said he ‘‘cutmy teeth’’ listening to gospel music.

‘‘Even though I sing secular music there’s still athread of gospel music that runs througheverything I do.’’

Thorn said his uncle taught him how to con-nect with others. ‘‘He really taught me to take thetime to listen to people and understand what theyare going through.’’

Now, Thorn tries to incorporate his uncle’steachings into his shows.

‘‘All people want when they go to a show is tofeel like someone cares about them, and the artiston the stage wants to connect them.”

Thorn also credits his uncle with teaching him“street smarts” having coached him during hisprofessional boxing career.

Thorn retired from boxing after a record of 14wins and four losses, saying ‘‘I had taken mycareer as far as it could have possibly gone’’.

Now, Thorn says he is trying to do the samewith his music by touring Melbourne nextmonth.

‘‘I want to come out to take my music to adifferent type of people.

‘‘I really feel I will be able to connect with theAustralians.’’

Thorn’s eclectic style is a mix of blues and rock— punchy riffs, melodies with roots in America’ssouth and lyrics that reflect life experiences.

Songs range from the candid I guess I’ll just

stay married to the spiritual He touched me.Thorn begun his professional singing career in

1997 and has released 10 albums. His fifth album Pimps and Preachers has been

topping the American charts for three weeks and

breaking into the Billboard top 100.“I just try to put out a quality product so my

fans will hit the repeat button instead of eject.”

Returning star leads Cavaliers to big winBY MORGAN COLE

CASEY Cavaliers welcomed the return of younggun Renae Mokrzycki from America with a com-prehensive victory over Blackburn in their Big Vdivision 2 women’s match at Cranbourne Basket-ball Stadium on Saturday night.

The Cavaliers’ championship odds took a hugeleap forward with the return of the star, who top-scored with 13 points and grabbed 12 reboundsin 18 minutes on court.

Coach Mark Holman was thrilled with thereturn of last season’s league MVP, who helped

his side physically outmatch the young Vikingsoutfit.

‘‘Mocky [Mokrzycki] was fantastic,’’ Holmansaid. ‘‘She led the way on scoring and rebound-ing. She adds a lot to our team.

‘‘She is a Casey junior so she loves the club, justwants us to be successful.’’

The Cavaliers’ win never looked in doubt asthey bullied Blackburn all over the court forcingthem to take ill-advised shots as the Cavalierswent on to win 68-42.

The college star may have been the mainattraction but Holman didn’t shy away from

how impressive his side has been, holding a winrecord of 8-4.

‘‘We always knew she was coming back but wehave focused this year on spreading thingsaround,’’ Holman said.

‘‘We don’t rely on one or two players andbecoming too one-dimensional.’’

A powerful final quarter by the CaseyCavaliers has secured their second straight win,66-47 over Shepparton, in their Big V division 2men’s match at Cranbourne Stadium on Saturdaynight. The Cavaliers have put their season backon track with wins over Western Port and the

Gators, the brakes put on a four-game skid.Casey looked sluggish in the first period, with

the Gators busy from beyond the arc, drainingthree triples to give them an early edge.

Shepparton began to lose control in the thethird period, shooting just 23 per cent from thefield as the Cavaliers turned up the heat on thedefensive end.

The Cavaliers broke the game wide open in thefinal period, knocking down 24 points to four.

Dean Johnson led the way for Casey pullingdown nine rebounds and shooting a modest 12points, while Josh Lemi added 11.

Polanski a

derby hopeCRANBOURNE-trained Polanskimade it two victories in a row at Caul-field, after easily winning the $80,000The Golden Fleece and Court JesterPlate (1600m) on Saturday .

The bargain buy is now likely to begiven a rest by trainer Robbie Laingbefore being set for the group 1 Vic-toria Derby (2500m) in the spring.

“Today’s race is about the time ofthe year that they used to have the Gib-son Carmichael Stakes (1600m. Overthe past few years I’ve had Subiaso andScelto run well in that race and thenend up in the derby,” Laing said.

“In last year’s Gibson Carmichaelthe horse that ran sixth was Fiveanda-halfstar, so horses that can run a milein the autumn they’re going to be ourstayers in the spring.”

Laing said Polanski had more abilitythan his previous derby runners Sceltoand Subiaso who finished eighth andninth in the Victoria Derby.

“He’s won two in town in theautumn. Those two horses were nevergood enough to win in town but ranreasonable races in the derby.

“Three weeks ago I would havesounded a dill [aiming at the derby],but he’s won over 1400 and he’s wonover a mile.

‘‘If you ran a market on the derbynow, Drago would be favourite andhe’d [Polanski] be second or thirdfavourite you would think.”

Allowed to bowl along in the lead byjockey Dean Yendall, Polanski ($2.50)kicked a length in front at the topof the home straight before appearingin trouble when Celeritas ($9) rangedup on his outside at the 200-metremark.

Responding to the urgings of Yen-dall, Polanski found plenty under pres-sure to fight off the challenge andrecord a 1.3-length victory overCeleritas, with Eagle Island ($3) finish-ing off well from the tail of the field.

Comets remain top of ladder despite drawCASEY Comets have failed to takemaximum points for the first time thisFFV State League 3 South East season, drawing 2-2 with Old Scotch atComets Stadium last Saturday.

The Comets remain on top of theladder despite the draw and are thecompetition’s only undefeated team.

Stan Webster’s troops dominatedthe opening half, but missed chancesmeant only a 1-0 lead at half-time.

Simon Webster took a long-rangeshot which forced Old Scotch goal-keeper Daniel Gieshen-White to tipthe ball over the bar.

Several other chances to Paul Prestiand Frank Gibson also went awry orwere saved by the brilliant Gieshen-White.

The Comets were then up in armswhen they didn’t receive a penalty inthe box. Eventually, Gibson played a

ball across goal for Marce Jannekerwho found the back of the net in the30th minute.

Old Scotch had a goldenopportunity early in the second halfbefore Robbie Acs made a brilliantsave for the Comets.

The visitors equalised in the 58thminut, and nine minutes later hit thefront when Jason Choi scored theirsecond goal.

The Comets then missed a goldenopportunity to Gibson and it lookedlike they were headed for their firstloss of the season.

Scorpions overcome Cats’ late surge

Launching pad: Casey Scorpions coach Rohan Welsh has got his team into a strong position approaching the

midway point of the VFL season. Picture: Wayne Hawkins

CASEY Scorpions suffered a late scare in their 13-pointVFL win over Geelong at Simonds Stadium on Sunday.

An 11-goal-to-three third quarter was the catalyst forthe victory over the Cats who dropped their second gamefor the season.

The Scorpions’ third term onslaught brought backmemories of Geelong’s performance in round 18 2011when it booted 10 goals in the opening term, beforemarching to a 128-point win.

But the Cats proved they are made of stern stuff tofight the game out strongly and lose 16.11 (107) to 18.12(120).

The Scorpions began slowly and were unable to kicktheir first major until the second term after a six-behindopening quarter.

Boom youngster Jesse Hogan began to lift and finishedthe match with a five-goal haul and working cohesivelywith Jack Fitzpatrick, who also booted five goals.

Despite the Scorpions leading by 37 point going intothe final term, the Cats stormed back to get within fivepoints.

The Scorpions’ midfield won them the game withDavid Rodan, Tom Couch and ruckman Jake Spencerwinning a mountain of possessions.

The victory moves the Scorpions to fifth on the VFLladder with 20 points, two points behind Port Mel-bourne.

Williamstown defeated the Scorpions developmentteam 16.13 (109) to 7.11 (53) in their clash at BurbankOval on Saturday morning.

Aiden Lyndsay and Brayden Fowler were best for theScorpions.

Holt stars in interleague winBY BRAD McGRATH

Match-winner: Cranbourne star Marc Holt

kicked seven goals in a best on ground

performance for the Casey Cardinia Football

League on Saturday.Picture: Paul Carracher/Wimmera Mail-Times

CASEY Cardinia League coach Michael Hollandhas hailed the performance of Marc Holt in their12-point interleague win over the Wimmera Foot-ball League at Horsham on Saturday.

Holland said the Cranbourne star had high-lighted why he had been such a dominant playerfor so long with his strong marking proving thedifference between the two teams.

Holt kicked four of his seven goals in the thirdterm when the match was on the line, with Wim-mera having few answers for the reigning leaguemedallist.

“I’ve never seen a guy who can mark like him –he was just brilliant,” Holland said.

“The Wimmera coach said to me that they hadthe strongest defender in the league on him andthey just didn’t have any answers.”

In a match which the teams’ ranking was notbefitting of the standard, the CCL did not haveeverything their way with the home team kicking7.0 to 4.2 in the opening term, but by half-timethe CCL had clawed their way to a three-pointlead.

Ahead by four points at the final change, Wim-

mera booted the opening goal of the quarterbefore the CCL kicked four of the next six tosecure victory.

After kicking the first goal of the term, BradHartigan, who was arguably Wimmera’s best, kicked to Ash Clugston, but the ball bounced toohigh and went through for a behind, when a goalwould have put them eight points ahead.

The CCL then kicked two quick goals, thesecond from Steve O’Bryan, that put the matchbeyond Wimmera.

“It was very good and probably didn’t reflectthe rankings of the two leagues,” Holland said.

“It ebbed and flowed in the third quarter andthen we kicked away a bit in the last and got ontop of them a little bit.”

Casey Cardinia had several usual suspects attheir best with Michael Collins, Justin Berry andMatt Lee prominent in the third term when theybegan to get on top.

Michael Harold and Rohan Hyde were alsosolid performers for the victors but it was Holtwho proved the match-winner.

Holland said he believes the Casey CardiniaLeague is worthy of a much higher ranking thanthe VCFL awarded it when the MPNFL split its

interleague team into three, one each from theCasey Cardinia, Nepean and Peninsula Leagues.

“I don’t think it really indicates the strength ofthe league,” he said.

“I think we’re definitely in the top 10 but wehave got a couple more wins to get there yet.”

Wimmera proved too strong in the under-18match, defeating Casey Cardinia 9.13 (67) to6.12 (48) in a match played as a curtain-raiser.

Hayden Speirings and Rory Hillard battledvaliantly for the CCL but Wimmera’s secondquarter, when they booted 3.4 to 1.3, proved to bematch-winning.

No Rebel yellas Stingrays roll

DANDENONG Stingrays moved to third onthe TAC Cup ladder with a crushing 53-pointwin over North Ballarat Rebels at ShepleyOval on Saturday.

The Stingrays’ hunger for the contestproved superior to the Rebels as they put thematch beyond doubt with a brilliant thirdquarter. Dandenong Stingrays 13.10 (88)defeated North Ballarat Rebels 5.5 (35).

Stingrays coach Graeme Yeats said histeam’s second half, when they outscored theRebels nine goals to two, was a pleasing sign.“Our first half wasn’t that flash. Ballaratreally challenged us and wanted it more . . .but the strength of this group was the willing-ness to refocus and win the one-on-ones andgo when it was their turn . . . that pleased memore than the win,” he said. With several Stin-grays away with Victorian Country commit-ments they were forced to blood four newplayers.

Stingrays talent manager Mark Wheelersaid the new quartet had positive signs buturged them to keep working hard. “We hadfour first-game players today whom I thoughtall did really well. Jayden Tompkins kicked abag of goals locally a few weeks back andlooks like a genuine player, but he and theother three were gasping for air and crampingearly.
