One sure indicator that a movie is destined to be-come a classic is that people want to watch it over and over again.

The Hollywood blockbuster Titanic certainly falls into this category, so much so that the cryptic phrase “get over it, the boat sank” became a line fans of the movie grew to hate. It was also a cinch that the epic flick was destined to become a slot machine theme, which is precisely what Bally Technologies did a couple of years ago when it licensed and branded Ti-tanic into a game that quickly spread to casino floors across the country.

Titanic slots are a natural attraction for fans of the movie because of the stunning visual displays that in-clude scenes and music from the film. The captivat-ing interactive experience has also won over legions of video slot players in general.

The machine Babcock was playing was a wide-area pro-gressive, meaning that the top award is a jackpot funded by all of the Titanic slots located in casinos

across a broad region. The jackpot is seeded with $400,000.

This normally sets the stage for a huge progressive amount, depending of course on how long the jack-pot has been building up. On the day Babcock was playing, the top award had swollen to more than $3.7 million dollars.

When the bonus round was finished, Babcock stared in disbelief at the screen, which told him he won the Titanic top award to the happy tune of $3,755,501.19, the largest jackpot ever hit on a Bally Technologies slot.

Sure, as long as the playing field is level—as it is in most sports.

Take football, for instance: a touchdown is six points, the extra point afterward is one point, and a regular field goal is three points.

Basketball, same story: A basket’s good for a couple of points, but if your shot comes from beyond the arc, you’ve earned three points. Free throws are

good for a single point. Everything’s easy to figure, right? Right.

So what about gambling? You’d think it would be the same story. After all, everyone knows that if you play craps and toss a seven or eleven on the first roll, you win. Play blackjack and get an ace and any ten-value card, you win. Play poker and get a royal flush, you win.

That’s the score across the board, so to speak, whether you’re playing at our Native American-owned-and operated casinos, at our racetracks (racinos), or at any number of New Mexico’s veteran and fraternal clubs.

But here’s where things get confusing, thanks to the New Mexico Gaming Control Board. In the casinos, you cannot enjoy an adult beverage while playing slots or table games, but you can enjoy a beer or cocktail while playing Hold’em or Omaha Hi-Lo while in the casino’s poker room.

Up to 700 slots are allowed inside each of our state’s five racinos—Sunland Park, Hobbs, Albuquerque,

Farmington, and Ruidoso—but table games are verboten, and no booze whatsoever is allowed on the slot floor.

There are about 120 veteran and fraternal clubs in the state of New Mexico, including the VFW, American Legion, and Elks, Eagles, and Moose Lodges. Of that number, roughly 60 feature slot machines. Up to 15 are allowed inside, in a space reserved as the club’s “game room.”

Here, club members may drink and smoke. But no guests are allowed—not even spouses. These organizations may also offer pull-tabs, but the hook here is only if they also offer bingo as well.

Another puzzling restriction: Free play is now tax-free and has long been used as a valuable marketing tool by the casinos, including offers of discounted, free, or two-for-one food deals. Our racinos have also caught on to the PR possibilities of free play, but the only drawback is they cannot offer free food in their marketing efforts.

A birds-eye view of gambling in the Land of Enchantment may look like everyone’s playing on a level field. Those in the game, however, are obviously dodging some potholes.

Dear Mark: Sometimes I mistakenly use my dad’s players card in a slot machine. Would I have any trouble getting a big payoff if they see the card isn’t mine? Wayne S.

On just about every players club card brochure,

you will find printed in 4-point type the words non-transferrable. Which means that members may not distribute, lend, or in any way allow another person to use their card.

These “revocable” perks-for-play are a privilege granted by the casino in exchange for your father’s past, and hopefully future, action. When your dad tries to redeem points for comps, most casinos are going to want to see some photo identification.

However, Wayne, that’s for the freebies. Regarding your question, I spoke with a few fellow employees from yesteryear still working on the inside, and they told me that when it comes to the actual payoff of a jackpot, you will still be paid. They won’t, how-ever, issue comps to you by honoring his card. Here’s the kicker: They are going to comp you anyway for a feeding frenzy so that after you chow down, you will hook right back up to another machine, allowing them a shot at getting some of their money back.

Casinos make billions by enticing players like you to hand over your hard-earned money. Thus, in the spirit of competition, casinos started offering comps to attract, and keep, loyal slot players. The knowl-edgeable player uses them to bargain for the best deals, along with lowering the house edge.

Since comps are awarded based on the number of coins you cycle through a machine, you might as well get credit for all those quarters you insert. Just don’t commit the mistake far too many players make, which is to gamble to excess just to receive them.

So, Wayne, being a slot player with the ability to “comp yourself,” you justifiably deserve your fair share of the billion-plus dollars casinos give away in comps each year. Just not on your dad’s card. That is not to say that in the real world of casino play, count-less spouses benefit from using each other’s card and

seldom get caught.While we’re at it, I also would recommend that you

possess players cards from at least three different ca-sinos. Casinos all too often change their comp guide-lines and host personnel. If you have several casinos that you enjoy, you will never have to worry that any changes to their comp policy will ruin your gambling experience. By spreading your action, you will find that the various casinos offer distinctive bargains at different times of the day, week, month, or year.

One final thought since I am probably going to get this question multiple times after this column runs: The machine’s software within does know that you are using a players card. But using one does not, repeat, not, have any effect on your outcome or the house edge. That’s a separate chip.
