Boats load from 6:30pm to 7:30pm, and the movie begins promptly at 7:45pm. The boats seat two to four people, and viewers will receive their snack pack when loading the boat. Theory of a Deadman will hit the stage at Inn of the Mountain Gods on July 14. This rock band from Del-ta, British Columbia, formed in 2001 and so far have a total of eight top 10 hits on the Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, including three No. 1s: “Bad Girlfriend,” “Lowlife,” and “Angel.” Tickets start at just $30.

JAMEY JOHNSON AND MARTY STUART July 27

Jamey Johnson and Marty Stuart are teaming up and coming to the Inn of the Mountain Gods on Wednesday, July 27. Johnson signed to BNA Re-cords in 2005, and made his debut with his single “The Dollar,” the title track to his 2006 album. Since then he has co-written singles for Trace Adkins, George Strait, James Otto, Joe Nichols, and Jessie James. Marty Stuart is known for his eclectic merg-ing of rockabilly, honky-tonk, and traditional country music. For over 40 years, the five-time Grammy win-ning multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, pho-tographer, and historian has been building a rich leg-acy. There’s this gal—no not a gal. That’s a little too informal of a way to describe this person. No, this is definitely a lady, one with a landslide of experience after mind-bend-ing decades in commercial real estate.

This lady, we’ll call her Carol, is a smart dresser. She owns a sparkling 3,000-square-foot home and a four-door Mercedes the color of Hawaiian black coral. A true jewel of a person, who has worked hard and reaped the re-wards. So everything in her life is top shelf. Everything goes her way.

Except when she sets foot in a casino.That’s when her guardian angel pulls an adios. “I love gambling,” Carol says. “It’s supposed to be fun.

But I lose. In fact, I lose most of the time. Then it’s not fun.”

Then there’s Myra. Myra runs her own shop, a mod-est advertising agency. Makes enough to own her home,

keep an office with a pair of employees, and she steers a beat-up Ford Explorer. Not everything in her life is top shelf, but everything is paid for. Like Carol, Myra likes to gamble on occasion. “I come to have fun,” she says, echoing Carol’s exact sentiments.

So why does Myra giggle and laugh while our Lady Carol grimaces and groans?

Why is Myra having fun and, for the most part, winning; while Carol is having fun and, for the most part, losing?

Could it be because Lady Carol is not really having fun? Let’s take a look: Carol approaches the blackjack table as if it were a field of combat, and her weapon has a feather-touch trigger of defeatism. She never smiles, never greats fellow players. She’s deadly serious.

Myra hops into her seat at the table, rubs her palms back and forth a couple of times, and playfully instructs the dealer to dole out an ace and a jack. She’s always smiling, and never fails to at least send a friendly nod in the direction of her fellow players.

You don’t have to be Judge Judy to figure out who the winner would be in any casino contest. And who would be the loser.

Because if there is one thing Carol and Myra share, it’s consistency. Myra is consistently friendly and truly enjoys herself, Carol is consistently grim and grumpy.

There’s another difference, too. While both are suc-cessful in their chosen careers, Myra approaches the blackjack table with confidence. She knows her Basic Elementary Strategy is sound. If applied with discipline, it has the house, the casino, at close to minus 2 percent. Myra’s in it for the fun of it.

Carol knows that as well. But, she will, at times, give in to hunches: “I feel it in my gut.” So she takes another card and busts out. The groaning begins. She has to win.

Myra smiles. She has to have fun.So, which one are you? Myra or Carol? Are you in it to

win it or do you come to have fun?I say you should be both. It starts with discipline and

understanding, and with dropping the Las Vegas train of thought. When in Vegas, we tend to go for broke. After all, it’s not every day that we go there. So we get up by a couple hundred bucks, we want to go for more. We want to break the bank.

Now, here at home in New Mexico, we’re generally less than an hour away from a casino. We can go anytime, but many of us have the same mindset: every time we go, we want to break the bank.

Forget it. Think local, bet local. In other words, give pri-ority to your return on investment, or ROI, as it’s known in economics parlance. If you get ahead by $200 or $300, stop. Put the money you just made away, and go take a short break. Get a cup of coffee or something to eat. If you want to continue to gamble, use your original bank-roll, that’s your “stash.” But don’t touch the profit you just made. That’s your “cash.”

And if you start to lose with your original stash, stop playing and leave. You can come back another day. Heck, you can come back tomorrow. This isn’t Vegas. You’re not trying to make the headlines.

Play smart and play consistent, and the fun—and mon-ey—will follow.

It’s like herding cats . . .How many times have you heard that old

saw? More than a few, I’d say. But have you ever met anyone who actually did it? Or at least its equivalent?

For over two decades, Harold Baugus did just that, only with big rigs, ran ‘em all over the United States from his office in Phoe-nix, Arizona—and that was long before cell phones, computers, and GPS. How orga-nized, not to mention cool-headed, do you need to be to do that?

Then the trucking company was sold, le-galized gambling came to the Valley of the Sun, and Baugus got an itch to do some-thing just a little bit different. It seemed a no-brainer to go to work for a casino. His first rung on the ladder to the top? Security.

Turns out, he loved the industry, so he began to climb even more rungs, working just about every department in casinos in California, Oregon, and Arizona. He was ambitious, smart, and dedicated. His goal as CEO for Isleta? “To develop to the maximum the enjoyment at each and every facility Is-leta offers,” Baugus says. “Isleta is a true destination center. We want to ensure the visitor a pleasurable, fun time—all the time.”

The man is as advertised: he is a sea-soned, organized, temperate leader. He is stunningly perfect as the CEO of everything at Isleta Casino & Resort. Period, end of in-terview.

A lot of new young male county music singers have appeared on the scene over the past decade, but only a handful of them stand out as truly great artists with the potential staying power to become legendary country music artists.

Josh Turner’s deep, resonating voice is instantly recognizable, thanks to a string of chart toppers like “Long Black Train,” “Your Man,” “Would You Go with Me,” “Firecracker,” and “Why Don’t We Just Dance.”

Named by People magazine as one of country mu-sic’s hottest stars, Turner is one of the youngest mem-bers of the distinguished Grand Ole Opry. He also is the youngest member to be inducted into Nashville’s Walk of Fame. Mighty hefty achievements for a singer that is only in his thirties.

Don’t miss one of the coolest rap and hip-hop events of the summer, when Baby Bash joins Paige Raymond and Da’unda’dogg at Buffalo Thunder Re-sort & Casino on Friday, July 15.

California native Ronnie Rey Bryant, better known by his stage name Baby Bash, hit it big in 2001 with is first studio album Savage Dreams. His latest al-bum is 2013’s Unsung.

Paige Raymond, who hails from Santa Rosa, Cali-fornia, turned the diss raps she wrote about the peo-ple who hated her in high school into a career, first starting a humorous YouTube channel before under-ground rap veteran and CEO of Cavvy R. Records, Da’unda’dogg, discovered her. Raymond is current-ly working on her sophomore album, Vitamin P, due out late 2016, and is gearing up to tour in its support.

As for Da’unda’dogg himself, this L.A. native has been a major figure on the underground West Coast music scene since the mid 1980s, gaining national recognition after being featured on the 1990 single “California Livin” with Mac Dre. To date he has re-leased 10 solo albums and has a catalog of over 30 releases by his label. Shuffle Master Classic Gives Table Games Players a Bonus

Gamblers are a superstitious lot and there is no end of rituals, lucky charms, and other quirks that they use to influence Lady Luck to come over to their side. Ca-sino employees have reported seeing amulets draped over machines, garlic being rubbed on (or stuffed into) machines, money being rubbed on women’s breasts or behinds, and all kinds of other tricks.

People would get furious at housekeeping if they cleaned a machine that the individual had been playing for some time, claiming that it would “clean the luck off.” Yup, they’ve seen it all, but one story takes the cake.

According to Listverse.com, a site that posted an article titled “10 Bizarre or Memorable Casino Experi-ences,” an anonymous security officer for an unnamed casino told the following tale:

During one of his patrols, a woman playing slots grabbed his arm and pleaded with him, “Will you please tell this machine to let me win?”

“Ma’am,” the security officer said, “the machine doesn’t respond to my commands. It’s an inanimate ob-ject, and there is no hidden button that we press to let it pay out.”

“I know that,” she replied indignantly. “I want you to tell the little man inside the machine to pay me.”

He paused, his mind trying to make sense of what he had just heard.

“I know that there is a little man inside the machine who can see me,” the woman continued, “and he won’t let it pay off because I’m black! But I’ve been playing this

machine all day, and it owes me some money.”Apparently she was quite insistent. Even after the

security officer had a slot tech physically open the machine and show her that no one was inside, she still didn’t believe him.

Dear Mark: I enjoyed your re-sponse in a previous column, when you played referee on what Gary R. thought was a misdeal when the deal-er had a 17, kept hitting, busted, but the dealer still took his bet. I am sure you would agree that not all casinos would have scooped up his wager. Anyhow, I have a protocol question relating to what should have hap-pened next. That one extra card dealt now makes the deck completely out of sequence from when the dealer first shuffled the cards. What is the policy now? Does the dealer keep dealing or immediately shuffle up? —Tom O.

Again, Tom, I played referee on Gary R’s inquiry based on the rules and regula-tions of the casinos where I had worked. I

kept how I would have handled his sce-nario out of my answer.

This week, it’s time for a disclaimer: When working on the inside, Yours Truly did not necessarily make every decision according to Hoyle. I tried my best to remain consistent, but I will also admit there were times I would drift from black and white into gray.

I had a strong belief that customer

service was paramount and that border decisions should favor the player unless the mistake was illegal or egregious. I would constantly ask myself “do we want to lose to a customer for life over a $50 slip-up?”

The math always favors the casino, and when you show a little generosity and let the customer keep what technically isn’t theirs, the house still ends up getting it all back within a hand or two anyway. Be-lieve me when I tell you that I have seen plenty of customers get into a tizzy over less, cash out, and never be seen again.

As to your “what happens next” ques-tion, had Gary R. been sitting on a single- or double-deck game, the dealer should have shuffled up after the incident. If it were a shoe or auto shuffler, typically you would just play on.
