Quality Management Fall 16’

IntroductionIn this experiment, a catapult’s shots will be studied based on different variables. The different variables studied in this experiment will be: three different balls, three different trajectory angles, and three different tensions from the tension pin. Each setting will have three separate trials which will average out to the data.

ProcedureTo start the project, we set the catapult to a standard base setting. This base setting consisted of the pin for the degree pivot being set to the first slot (140⁰), the rubber band being attached to the throwing arm at the highest point, and the rubber band being attached to the rubber band pole at the highest point. The first factor we tested were different balls at the base setting, we threw 5 times for each ball and recorded the distance of the ball traveled. The second factor our group tested was the angle on the degree pivot, all with the whiffle ball. We changed the degree point 3 times and threw the whiffle ball 5 times at each angle, to isolate the difference caused by the angle of the throwing arm. The third and final variable that was tested was the band pole slot, we threw first with the pin in the top slot and moved the pin to 3 different slots. We started at the top slot and moved the pin downward and threw at each slot 5 times. We then recorded and collected the distance the ball traveled.

ConclusionEach factor changed the distance that the ball traveled. The purpose of this experiment was to see how each individual variable changed the distance thrown. The type of ball used had significant impact on the distance, as well as the angle the ball was thrown at, and the slot on the rubber band pole. Another useful aspect of the project was to analyze the process in which the data was collected. The method of collecting data had to be excellent in order to have reliable data that results in inaccurate result. Making sure that the measurements were accurate and without error provided more opportunity to reflect on the project and process.
