SHOEMAKER GIVES “Plant Seeds Of Kindness and Watch the Love Grow” In February, we celebrated Random Acts of Kindness week. Students performed random acts of kindness all the round the school and in their homes from making cards for staff members, to filling Heart to Heart bags with books and a snack for Preschoolers, to planting a kindness garden. We can continue to show our kindness here at Shoemaker with several initiatives this March. Thanks in advance for your help and support.

WALL OF HOPE: Shoemaker will participate in the American Cancer Society's Wall of Hope from March 4 - 8. Students

will have the opportunity to purchase a die-cut brick for $1 a each morning. The money will be used by the American Cancer Society to purchase teddy bears for children in need in the Lehigh Valley. Let's see how much "hope" Shoemaker can build!

Pennies For Patients: For this month’s community service club project we will be doing Pennies for Patients. This program

raises money for the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society and we will be doing this in honor of Elyse Franco, sister of 4th grader, Ben Franco. She is currently receiving treatment for Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Your child will be bringing home a little box to collect money in and it will be due by March 15th.

Plant Seeds of Kindness Sale: We are holding a fundraiser to help defer costs for the Shoemaker garden. We are selling seed

packets of wildflowers for $1.00. The packet reads; "Commit Random Acts of Kindness and Senseless Acts of Beauty!" Please consider purchasing a packet of seeds or 2 or 3 for your family and friends and plant seeds of kindness so we can plant the Shoemaker garden. Please fill out the order attached to this newsletter. Orders due by April 15th.

SKETCHING IT UP IN ART CLASS

Mr. Shreck is extremely excited to announce that for the entire month of March, 4th graders at Shoemaker will be working on a project with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms Professional Hockey Team!

Students will work in groups and use SketchUp to create a computer-generated 3D model of what they would like to see the arena look like! The students will then have a few "special guests" visit Shoemaker to view their designs! :) If you head to Mr. Shreck's website, http/www.eastpennsd.org/teacherpages/jshreck/ you download a free version of SketchUp, the program the students will be using, You can also visit Mr. Shreck's page to see a live-video of what the new PPL Center Arena is looking like as they build it!

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION SHOEMAKER ELEMENTARY THURSDAY, March 21st Registering at Shoemaker Elementary School This is certainly an exciting time in your child's life as he/she prepares to enter kindergarten. PSSA Information: Shoemaker School will participate in Pennsylvania System of School Assessments (PSSA) as indicated in the timeframe below. We have altered the building schedule to begin these assessments at 9:15 am on identified days below. March 11-15 – Grade 5 PSSA Writing April 8-15 – Grades 3-4-5 PSSA Reading and Math April 22-26 – Grade 4 – PSSA Science Parents often ask us what they can do to help prepare their child for these assessments, so we’ve included a few suggestions:

• Make sure that your child gets a good night sleep. • Create a relaxed home environment. Don't panic and

force your nine-year-old to spend the night before the tests start going over flash cards and test prep worksheets. Have a leisurely dinner or spend time family time together playing games.

• Serve your child a healthy breakfast. Proper nutrition will greatly help your child's concentration. Don't let him skip breakfast, and avoid sugary breakfast treats like toaster pastries. Instead, try a whole grain cereal with milk and fruit or an egg, cheese, and veggie omelet.

• Show him that you are already proud of his work as a student. Tell him how smart you know he is. This will help to build his confidence.

Finally, just as a reminder, non-school educational trips/tours will not be approved during PSSA assessments for students in those particular grade levels.

ZUMBA® CLASSES AT SHOEMAKER OPEN TO STAFF AND ADULTS IN THE COMMUNIT

Zumba® Fitness – When participants see a Zumba class in action, they can’t wait to give it a try. Zumba classes feature exotic rhythms set to high-energy Latin and international beats. Before participants know it, they’re getting fit and their energy levels are soaring! The class feels like a Party, featuring rhythms from Merengue, Salsa, Reggaeton, Samba, Belly dancing and other international music. It’s easy to do, effective and totally exhilarating, often building a deep-rooted community among returning students.

Location: Shoemaker Elementary (Main Gym) Times: Mondays 4:30PM-5:30 PM Walk in Rate: $6.00 per class

Zumba® Toning – When it comes to body sculpting, Zumba Toning raises the bar (or rather, the toning stick). It combines targeted body-sculpting exercises and high-energy cardio work with Latin-infused Zumba moves to create a calorie-torching, strength-training dance fitness-party. Students learn how to use lightweight, maraca-like Toning Sticks to enhance rhythm and tone all their target zones such as arms, legs, and stomach.

Location: Shoemaker Elementary Main Gym Time: Wednesday 4:30PM-5:30 PM Walk in Rate $6.00 per class** Classes taught by a licensed Zumba Instructor Karla Matamoros. Wear comfortable clothing, sneakers, bring water and towel. Toning class- bring light weights 1Lb-3Lbs, some toning sticks available.

READ ACROSS AMERICA CELEBRATION Students and staff enjoyed a “Read In” and “Parade of Books” in honor of

Read Across America.

This past November, Shoemaker Elementary School launched a new extra curricular activity for its fourth and fifth graders. The first ever Shoemaker Dance Team is now comprised of 60 fourth and fifth grade students who signed up to share their love for dance with their peers. The dance team has been split into four different groups which will take turns performing at Shoemaker’s monthly Mustang Meetings. The dancers meet for three one-hour practices to learn and prepare their routines. The very first performance took place on December 21st at the “Holiday Sing-A-Long” Mustang Meeting. Thirteen boys and girls performed a dance routine to an upbeat version of “Jingle Bell Rock” in front of the Shoemaker students, staff, and families. Our second group of dancers performed a routine to ”Call Me Maybe” at our February Mustang Meeting. The rest of the dance team members will perform at the May, and June Mustang Meetings.

Pictured here is coach and choreographer, Mrs. Kim Exaros, with the December Dance Team members. Assistant coaches include Miss Tara Lindsay, Mrs. Deb Kaplan, and Mrs. Patty Arnold.
