Community serviCesalways here for you
Catholic Charities addresses the social and human-service needs of the greater houston community through programs aimed at promoting health, safety and independence. we defend the rights and dignity of the men, women and children who are the most vulnerable in our society.
basiC needs – helping you live betterwe provide food, rent, utilities, medication, emergency financial assistance and support services aimed at returning families and individuals to self-sufficiency. as we help relieve the overwhelming stress that comes from the lack of basic needs, those in crisis are better able to work towards self-sufficiency.
Counseling – empowering you to live your bestour professional counselors help guide those struggling to work through life’s most challenging problems with mental health and counseling services, which encompass individuals, couples, group and family sessions as well as preventive and educational services for adults and children.
disaster reCovery – restoring hope, rebuilding liveswe provide response, coordination and short- and long-term recovery services to individuals and families dealing with the aftermath of natural disasters like hurricanes, floods and other natural catastrophes.
aids ministry – providing compassionate supportwe provide case management, financial assistance, counseling and spiritual direction to those living with hiv/aids, along with their family members and friends.
seniors – empowering seniors to live to the fullestwe support seniors in their efforts to stay healthy and active, volunteer, build friendships and live independently for as long as possible. we provide companionship and transportation to doctor’s appointments, grocery shopping and other vital trips, health and welfare monitoring, referrals for mental health, education, social and spiritual needs, emergency assistance, and loving, listening hearts for hundreds of otherwise-isolated seniors in and around houston.
parish soCial ministry and advoCaCy – working to reflect god’s love parish social ministry is a unique partnership between parishes in the archdiocese of galveston-houston and Catholic Charities. the goal is to empower parish communities to apply the Church’s teaching of loving our neighbor and helping our brothers and sisters in need by providing annual training, retreats and workshops to put the teachings into actions. advocacy also includes collaborating with other agencies, advocates and parishes to create unified responses to local, state and national public policy issues.
we see through Christ’s eyes, listen with god’s heart and serve with help from the holy spirit – and people like you.

pregnanCy serviCes – helping provide the best care for babies and their families we assist young mothers and fathers and their families during pregnancy through the baby’s first year of life with medical referrals, education and counseling services. we support parents by teaching parenting and life skills, securing resources, medical care and, when requested, assistance with infant adoptions.
adoption – a loving optionadoption is a life-giving, loving option for the future of your unborn baby. Coping with an unplanned pregnancy begins with knowing the options and finding support as you face difficult decisions in preparing a plan for your child. we support reaching out to birth mothers through search services.
foster Care – ensuring a loving and caring home for children and youthfoster families provide children in crisis situations a loving, stable home. foster care has been a part of Catholic Charities’ work since our inception, growing naturally from the belief that every child has the right to the love, protection and care of a capable and committed family.
st. Jerome’s homes for Children – nurturing the potential of every child we provide a nurturing environment for unaccompanied refugee children and youth, many who have escaped devastating situations in their native lands. through foster families, our agency homes and supportive services, we help them heal and thrive.
st. miChael’s homes for Children – preparing the way homewhen unaccompanied minors are referred to us by the u.s. office of refugee resettlement, we work hard to reunite the children with relatives here in the u.s. or in their country of origin. generally, these solitary children have entered our country lacking proper documentation and have been detained by immigration officials. as we plan to reunite them with their family, we care for them at st. michael’s homes in a safe, loving and comfortable environment where they receive clothing, meals, mentoring, medical and legal services, education and assistance in contacting family.

housing initiativeshelping families come home
affordable home ownership – honoring history, building futuresCatholic Charities Community development Corporation (CdC), the independence heights redevelopment Council (ihrC) and its partners are working together to revitalize this historic neighborhood and create home ownership opportunities for low to moderate-income families. in 1908, african-american families began settling in an area northeast of houston known as independence heights. by 1915, the area contained more than 600 residents who voted to incorporate and become the first african-american city in texas. in this initiative, we partner with the stanley group, a member of the marek family of Companies, to build three-bedroom, two-bath homes in independence heights. the new homes are priced to limit the threat of gentrification and create opportunities for current residents to remain in the historic community settled by their grandparents.
the villa – offering safe haventhe villa is transitional housing that offers women and their children an escape from domestic violence and other issues at a transitional housing complex east of downtown houston. the villa offers safe housing for displaced women and their children through social services that assist them in moving toward freedom, permanent housing and employment.
veterans assistanCe program – welcoming veterans back homethe veterans assistance program stands as a refuge of hope for our men and women who have served this country. veterans in crisis can be helped with financial assistance for rent, mortgage, food, employment and of educational guidance and other needs.

migration and refugee servicesimmigration and refugee serviCes
a friend to strangers in a strange land
refugee resettlement – building community in helping to create a home away from home, we assist government-approved refugees in becoming self-sufficient through cultural orientation, job development, family reunification and resettlement. we assist newcomers approved by the federal government in securing housing, food, clothing and other necessities; accessing experienced social workers; gaining job, life and language skills; and otherwise assimilating into the nation’s fourth largest city.
Campaigning for Change. since 1975 more than 2.5 million people have been resettled in our nation, most in our metropolitan areas.
Consistent with its own long-standing ministry to refugees and immigrants, the Catholic Church has placed itself at the center of the national debate over comprehensive immigration reform. Catholic Charities is there as well.
we seek to draw attention to the human consequences of our nation’s immigration and naturalization system, which from a humanitarian and ethical standpoint warrants humane and comprehensive attention.
informed by god’s word and inspired by our traditions, we lead in the movement for reform, supporting federal legislation that grants newcomers protection from exploitation, along with opportunities to earn legal status and work openly, honestly and safely as they create new futures for themselves and their families.
immigration legal serviCes – giving a voice to the voicelessour st. frances Cabrini Center for immigrant legal assistance is dedicated to providing high-quality services to individuals otherwise unable to obtain legal representation. Center activities include outreach, legal assessment and counseling, representation as well as advocacy. our clients encompass victims of human trafficking, those separated from their families and eager to be reunited and those who fear persecution in their country of origin.
