Clergy Thoughts !

I recently went to Ford City to my father!in!law’s house and stayed overnight to help him get to some doctor appointments he had the next day.

My wife grew up in this house, so it’s been in the family for over 40 years. The house now sits emp-ty most of the time because my mother!in!law passed away 8 years ago and my father!in!law lives somewhere else and just stops in to check his mail on occasion. One of my brothers!in!law lives nearby and watches the house, another one lives in Ohio, and another one lives in Allentown, and occasionally, Florida. So, the family is pretty scattered.

So, I woke up early that day, and was sitting at the kitchen table, and started reflecting about the house, and I started seeing in my mind’s eye scenes from family get!togethers. I could see the adults seated around the table, the kids at the table out in an enclosed back porch, and I could see my mother!in!law cooking in the kitchen, putting the finishing touches on what was always a fantas-tic meal. She was always the last one to sit down after she put the food over, everyone had filled their plates, and she was sure no one needed anything else. I could see in my mind’s eye the con-versations we had around the table, the games we played, the laughter we shared as a family, as well as the sorrow we shared when Gram and my mother!in!law died. I thought about how many memories that house held, and how sad it will be when the house leaves the family.

Then I realized that the house isn’t the family, the many members of the family are still around, though spread out, and we still communicate with each other and see each other when we can. Even though we are separated by distance we are still bound together by love. We may not agree or be happy about things that happen in each other’s lives, but we are still bound together by love, and we share many memories.

I was contemplating this days later and realized that this is why the family is called the Domestic Church. Our Church family works the same way. We all have our parishes with the church build-ings, but the buildings aren’t the Church the people are the Church. The buildings hold a lot of memories for many of us, and they will continue to make many more memories for us, but we are the Church. We are scattered around, some of us stray, some of us move away, all of us will pass from this world to the next at some point, some of us make decisions or have events in their lives that we may not agree with or be happy about, but we remain the Family of God.

And just like any family, we have something that binds us together the bond of love that is Jesus Christ. He is Love, and He binds us together as His body, His family. And just like any family, where we come together and make the best memories is when we share a meal. For our Church family, that happens every week when we share the Body and Blood of Christ in the Eucharist.

Our Church Family, like any family, will continue to share joys, laughter, sorrows, and pain, and con-tinue to grow together in He!who!is!Love and make many memories together, with the most im-portant memory in the Eucharist which we partake of in memory of Him. !

! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Peace, Deacon Todd!

Corpus Christi Procession & Service

Sunday, June 3

The Corpus Christi Proces-sion is Sunday, June 3rd. Starts at Noon processing from St. Mary to St. Agatha for Benediction onto St. Brigid Church for the clos-ing. The reception will take place at St. Brigid Social Hall.

Eucharistic Corner

Last week we said that originally one reason the piece of Host is added to the chalice is to show unity among the early Christian communities. Today the bish-op no longer sends a fraction of bread to each community. Now the priest says this inaudible prayer while placing the bread in the wine (commingling): "May this mingling of the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ bring eternal life to us who receive it." On the cross Jesus poured out His blood in sacrifice for us and suf-fered death. The commingling signifies the reunification of Body and Blood, the resurrection of Jesus, and salvation for those who receive Him in the Eucharist. _____
