Countdown to Giving Hearts Day I had no idea what to expect when we decided to dive in and be part of Giving Hearts Day. This is a 24-hour fundraiser that’s already in its 14th year. We are so thankful that new nonprofits can join in whenev- er they are able. We surpassed our matching fund’s goal of $10,000 and raised $15,000 thanks to amazing com- munity groups and individuals who see our school and what we are accomplishing. After months of planning and working behind the scenes, the big day is just around the corner – Giving Hearts Day is Thursday, February 11. On Giving Hearts Day our goal is to double those matching funds, giving us a grand total of $30,000. We will put all of these generous donations to good work right away by purchas- ing 15 more iPads, making us a 1-to- 1 technology school in grades K-8, and purchasing an electronic sign for the corner of our campus. The amazing news I have to share since our last update is, because our match and goal have gone higher than originally planned, we will have the funds to create the first- ever STEAM (science, technology, engineering, and math) Lab at St. Alphonsus School! We have a dedi- cated space ready to turn into the lab for all students to use. I didn’t think we would be here – and thanks to a community that believes in our mis- sion, we are building momentum and building a STEAM Lab! Ten dollars or more will be matched by our generous match donors. You can donate any time on Thursday, February 11 at Giv- ingHeartsDay.org and search for St. Alphonsus School. Checks are also welcome – they must be dated Feb- ruary 11, 2021, and be in-hand on Thursday, February 11. Giving Hearts Day has also asked that each participating nonprofit in- clude a new and used goods list on their giving profile. We have created a list of needs we could use for our school in case people would rather give items instead of financial gifts. Our current needs include: 8 1/2x 11 construction paper medium/large paint brushes black sharpies (normal size and thin) acrylic paint painting canvases disinfecting wipes masking tape Elmer’s glue Command Hooks Washable Paint Items can be dropped off in the main entryway of our school dur- ing school hours. We appreciate your consideration! We can’t wait to carry this mo- mentum all the way through Giving Hearts Day and beyond. Our hearts are so full. We will keep you up- dated on how our big day goes, and we have all of you to thank for our progress already in thought, word, and deed. Blessings to all of you! FAED 2021 scholarships offered Ditch the dip with help from Cavalier County Memorial Hospi- tal and Cavalier County Health Dis- trict during Through With Chew Week February 21-27 Smokeless tobacco users are encouraged to make the Great American Spit Out on February 25 their designated quit date. Setting a quit date greatly improves a tobacco user’s chance at success. Cavalier County Memorial Hos- pital has the tools and resources for smokeless tobacco users who want to quit tobacco. Cavalier County Memorial Hospital (CCMH) and Cavalier County Health District are educating the community about how smokeless tobacco can cause harm and encourage young people never to start using these products. In 2019, nearly 12% of North Dakota adult males reported us- ing smokeless tobacco in the last 30 days. Both adult and high school- aged males currently use smoke- less tobacco more than six times the females' rate. Cavalier County Memorial Hospital recognizes the most effective way to quit tobacco is to make a quit plan. CCMH as- sists those wanting to quit tobacco by providing educational materials and tobacco cessation resources. In addition, the statewide tobacco ces- sation program, NDQuits, offers free support and coaching through phone and web programs. “Quitting smokeless tobacco now reduces the risk of cancer, heart dis- ease, birth defects, and even death,” said Courtney Howatt with Cava- lier County Health District “Using any tobacco product poses a risk to your health, and Through With Chew Week is a great time to take back control of your health.” Cavalier County Memorial Hos- pital has five tobacco treatment specialists (TTS) available to help you quit; A TTS receives special- ized training about tobacco-related health conditions, cessation medi- cations, and behavioral counseling. Through behavioral counseling, CCMH tobacco treatment special- ists help you develop a quit plan that breaks routines to avoid trig- gers and prepare for cravings to make your quit attempt more suc- cessful. They can recommend ces- sation medications to reduce with- drawal symptoms and cravings. Receiving counseling and using cessation medications more than double your rate of success. Cavalier s here to provide those who use smokeless tobacco prod- ucts with the information they need to quit successfully,” said Nancy Boe, TTS with Cavalier County Me- morial Hospital.“Our goal during Through With Chew Week is to ed- ucate North Dakotans on the dan- gers of smokeless tobacco, which includes cancers of the mouth, esophagus, and pancreas, as well as many other health problems like heart disease.” For help with quitting smoke- less tobacco, visit https://ndquits. health.nd.gov/ or call Cavalier County Memorial Hospital Clinic at 256-6120.
