Principal’s Report

Pupils- It is indeed a great privilege to work at CBC. The friendliness and the enthusiasm of the children at school, on a daily basis, draws me and the staff to school each and every day. One cannot but benefit from the experience of receiving love and appreciation from the learners. Even though one has been performing the task of educating and guiding the children for many a year, it is in fact the children that teach us. Every day we are exposed to new ideas and ways of life.

Academics- In the grade 12 final examinations of 2010, we were awarded a Gold Trophy by the Free State Department of Education for our learners’ results. They concentrated on 3 categories this year to determine excellence and achievement, namely percentage pass, percentage Bachelors pass and percentage pupils from previously disadvantaged backgrounds. I am proud to announce that CBC Bloemfontein was the only school in the province that achieved 100 % in all 3 categories. Between them they got 28 distinctions in the various subjects, with Nelly Mene getting 6 distinctions and Stephen Fan achieving 4.

The rest of the school got an average pass percentage of 99%, surprising as we seem to be moving towards a society where we do not have to work hard, yet still receive the rewards. A special mention must be made of Xola Matlanyane who through his good mathematics results was selected for the Free State B Team. Xola, together with Mofeni Masisi and Kgosi Taye, were also invited to the Potchefstroom University to attend a provincial Science Convention. Tshepang Afrika after winning a provincial silver medal at the Sasol Science expo, becomes the first CBC ever to be invited to participate at the National Science expo.

At the start of the year we acquired the services of Mrs. Harriet Speckmeier, a lady that managed the special needs section of the

F Doe for many years with distinction. Under her guidance the remedial section has blossomed. We now have the temporary services of a Psychology intern from EPOG as well as two remedial students that are busy studying their honours degrees. We are also currently in the planning phase to possibly implement intervention measures in Pre-school and 8 levels. This could lead to us having 2 grade 8 classes. We are, however, not thinking of doubling the school size. Small we are and small we would like to remain. Quantity has never been a substitute for quality.

We however, urge the parents and learners to review their attitudes towards academic work. In a society where mediocrity dominates, there is always scope for an achiever to rise rapidly above his peers. Did you not send your child to CBC to get the best education so that they might thrive after school?

Sport- This year was not as successful as last year, a trend that I hope will be reversed next year. We did not win any leagues or Inter-CBC's. A number of teams tried hard to remain competitive and they did improve their results towards the end of the year. In the hockey discipline we did, however, have some achievers, Keamo Modise and Antonay Clarke were selected for the Inter CBC team for the fourth time. They were also selected to represent the Free State provincial schools teams for a total of six years this season. We will surely miss their talents next year. Gomolemo Mochoari was also selected for the Inter-CBC Hockey team for the second time. Priscilla Moeletsi was selected for the Free State U14 C team, I am convinced that if she continues to work at her sport she will achieve even greater heights.

The U13 soccer and hockey teams performed well at the Inter-CBC tournaments, showing great depth and fighting spirit. The U19 teams,

although they managed to beat one of the biggest schools this year, were depleted when they went to defend their trophy at the Inter-CBC tournament.(academic and disciplinary reasons) Despite this, they still managed a

rdcredible 3 position, with four players being selected for the National side, namely: Ketso Nkholise, Napo Modise, Thato Khama and Khayalethu Mlonyeni.

The chess A team, after winning, their league last year, were promoted to the B- League, thereby putting them in a much more competitive league. Despite this jump they

rdmanaged a very credible 3 position in the league this year, with Kwan-Yu Lin and Tlou Lebentlele winning board prizes. The B team

ndmanaged a 2 position in the league, with three players, namely; Tsiamo Ramatsekane, Mofenyeni Masisi and Kgosi Taye all winning the board prize. We are quietly confident that this section of the sport programme at CBC will continue to grow at school.

Culture- The music department under the ever watchful eye of Mrs Louise Malherbe has expanded its choice of musical instruments. The disciplines now offered include piano, keyboard, flute, recorder, theory, violin and guitar, with the inclusion of Miss Beth Gianni and Mrs Chrisna Smit. Some of the more noteworthy results at the annual eisteddfod were Naledi Ramanamane who was awarded an A and two A+ symbols for piano, Bonolo Paarman who was awarded an A and two A+ symbols for recorder and Xola Matlanyane who was awarded an A and A+ symbol for piano. Xola has also been selected to compete in a national competition in Gauteng next term.

The very talented young lady, Tshepang Afrika, after helping CBC win the provincial UN debate, was selected as one of the best speakers. This meant that she was selected as a member of the national team that travelled

and competed in New York. The South African team won the competition and our young lady did get special mention. I am convinced that we will still hear far more of this talented young lady in the future.

Parents- It is very pleasing to see a dramatic increase in parent participation this year, a very necessary development if we as a school are to succeed in educating the child to his full potential. Please continue in this vein, you are guaranteed to reap the benefits in having a better relationship with children and the rest of the educational family. I would like to thank the PTA under the very able leadership of Mr. Richard Khuduga for all that they have done in co-ordinating the parents and fundraising events this year. It is a thankless job and the rewards are not always immediately evident, however rest assured you are doing a fantastic job and are definitely moving in the right direction.

The Board under the leadership of Dr Darron Ferraris continues to lead the school in a dynamic way to address the challenges of an ever changing society. Thank you to all the board members for their unselfish leadership. Ferraris must be congratulated for being a tireless servant to the school, this year is his twentieth year as a member of the Board of Governors. We thank him for tirelessly working all these years to ensure that CBC Bloemfontein is a better educational institution.

Staff- I thank the staff for their hard work throughout the year. A few lines in this report would not do justice to all the hours that they have invested in the education of the children at CBC. May we as the staff continue to do our profession proud and never cease to uplift, love and care for the children in our care.

As we compile the magazine at the end of each year, we are always amazed when we realize how much activity takes place at our school. Education should never consist of learning from books only but should also be concerned with exposing our learners to as many extramural experiences as possible. At CBC we encourage participation in sport and many cultural activities and have many functions and outings that allow the learners to develop physically and acquire important social skills. Our magazine reflects the enjoyment of our learners as they develop these skills.

It never ceases to give us pleasure to see the successes achieved by our learners and we trust that, as you page through this magazine, you, too, will find it enjoyable.

From the Staff Representative

From the Teachers' point of view

St Joseph's CBC saw a different set of parents this year (2011) when a handful of parents took the initiative of doing things differently. These parents showed interest in the education of their children, and became more involved, by way of participating in the implementation of the school calendar.

The aforesaid involvement is manifested in, among others, the distinctive way in which the following events were handled: the mother and daughter's day, the Founder's Day dinner, as well as the

meaningful participation of the Grade 11 parents in meetings convened by their class representative.

The efforts of the School Board, the PTA, the management team of the school (in the capable hands of the headmaster of this institution), the staff as well as all those who made a positive contribution towards making the education of the children a success, have been noted with a lot of appreciation. Keep the good work going !!

This has been a fruitful yet difficult year as our annual programme was filled with a lot of activities and events. The year began with demands that required a few adaptations that most of us strived to acquire.

Our support structures, which are our parents and staff members of CBC made it possible for us not only to get through this year but also to make a success of it. The support from our fellow learners served as a motivation tool and their achievements served as an inspiration tool.

The tension, nerves and stress were often relieved by the ethos and atmosphere that our school has created and further improves.

Having said all of this, CBC has and will remain the best environment for any child to develop.

Day Care Report

Day Care has grown so much over the past few years that it was necessary for Mr Borchard to make some drastic changes. The need for an extra teacher was evident and so Mr Borchard brought Mrs Linda Goodlet up from the Pre-school to take charge of the Grade 2 class. This she is handling extremely well. Mrs Sandra Fourie was then sent down to the Pre-school to take over various duties and the afternoon care, which she tells me, she is enjoying immensely! Miss Hloekile Botsane is continuing her sterling work with the little ones.

The new teacher on the day care team is now the very capable Miss Rose Willis. She has made a huge difference in the Grades 4-6 classes. I am now responsible for the Grade 3 class, which I enjoy very much. It has been an adjustment for us all, but we are now settling down into our various positions. We see the wisdom of Mr Borchard's decision with these changes and thank him very much. He is continually available to us if and when a problem should arise in the afternoon.

On a personal note, I would like to thankMr Borchard and his staff for the incredible support I have received during my husband's serious and sudden illness. Also a huge thank you to both learners and their parents whose love and comfort have helped to sustain me during some very trying times.

May we, as the Day Care team, thank all our loyal parents for trusting your children into our care in the afternoons. Day Care is a wonderful way of ensuring homework is up to date and this allows you hard working parents one less thing to worry about, after your hard day at work.

We would like to take this opportunity of wishing you all a wonderful Christmas season and look forward to being of service to you and your children in 2012. God bless you and enjoy your holidays.

Remedial Education

The re-establishment of a Remedial Education unit at CBC has proved a great success. It is fulfilling an immense need.

Every child's future is closely aligned to the quality of his schooling and it is, therefore, imperative that every effort should be made to remove all obstacles that impede progress. The teacher is the first person to identify learners who are lagging because of learning problems and when a learning problem is of such a nature that it cannot be dealt with in the classroom the child is referred to the Remedial Education Unit where careful diagnosis is made, a meaningful programme set up and intensive remedial therapy or support teaching given.

The importance of Reading, Spelling, Writing and Mathematics is accentuated. During this year a wide variety of children from Grade 1 to 4 were enrolled in remediation programmes. Learners from Grades 5 and 6 were also identified for evaluation to determine their level of academic functioning in Mathematics and English.

Many professional colleagues have provided assistance and their input has contributed to the success of the Remedial Education Unit.The continuing value of the efforts of Valmarie

Pienaar, the Resident Occupational Therapist, is appreciated more than words can express. Together we presented workshops on Study Skills to Grades 4 to 12 and also developed a Stimulation Programme for younger children to be implemented at home by the parents.

It is with gratitude that we acknowledge the contributions of Lindsey Clark and Hanlie Du Toit, our visiting Intern Psychologists from the University of the Free State, who were available for counselling and support sessions with learners in need.

We are also indebted to Dimitra Mbanis and Annemarie Jacobs, post graduate students from the UFS specialising in Remedial Education, who have spent more than six months assisting the Remedial Education Unit by offering Support Teaching to some of our learners.

Finally I wish to express my appreciation to Mr Wally Borchard, the Principal, for the continuous encouragement, support and freedom of opportunity he has given us. Without this the Unit would not have been able to achieve its success.

2011 kicked off with a bang! We started the term with all three classes filled to the brim and this continued throughout the year. Our fund raising began with a parent's braai. This is always successful and a good opportunity for parents to really get to know one another.

A Big walk and “Boeresport” day was arranged in the 3rd term.

This was such fun and it was thoroughly enjoyed by all the parents who enthusiastically took part in all the activities. This will definitely be an annual event! A zoo visit also took place in the third term which is always enjoyed by the children.

We raised enough money to enclose a section of the verandah with canvas. This is so useful, especially on rainy days, when the children have to stay indoors.

Mrs Landela, an optometrist arranged an eye screening again this year for all the pre-school children, for possible eye problems. Once again Mrs Landela, thanks for your time and effort.

We say a sad goodbye to Teacher Sandra who is relocating to Zeerust. We wish her all the best for the future – we will miss you, Sandra!

To my staff – thank you for your co-operation, patience and loyalty. I appreciate all the effort you put into making the pre-school SIMPLY THE BEST!

Thank you to our families who have once again been an amazing support throughout the year.

Last but not least, thank you Mr Borchard for your love and patience through some stressful times. You are also SIMPLY THE BEST!

Katleho M. In my bedroom I have a blanket in my bedroom and I have blinds. My bed is little. I don't sleep in it but I am scared in my room but when I am 7 years old I will sleep in it. Someone will not sleep with me.

Molemo. Today we brought toys to school and my toys are 7 cars.

Mohlodi. My bedroom has a peach mat. I have curtains and I will have some pictures.

Asemahle. I don't have my own bedroom I sleep with my mom. We have carpets on the rooms floor and the lounge has tiles and we have two beds and my walls are white.

Karabo. Today is Friday and my bedroom is like this. My floor is black my mat is peach and I have a double bed.

Rethabile P. My bedroom has a Hello Kitty sheet. It is silver and my bed is double and with a Hello Kitty duvet. The duvet is red.

Remo. My bedroom has curtains and my walls they are red so I sleep in my bed. It is my own bed and I put my Summer picture on the walls and I have tiles.

Katleho T. My bedroom has curtains. They are orange. It has a duvet. My walls are purple. My floor has tiles.

Onalenna. At my bedroom I do sleep in my bedroom and I have a lot of toys and I have pictures on my walls.

Kananelo. In my bedroom I have a blanket and pillows. My mom sleeps at the same room with my baby too. But my mom and my dad have an electric blanket.

Mphoentle. My walls have Hannah Montana pictures. I have a duvet. I have my own bedroom.

Olerato. My bedroom has two beds and I have my own bedroom. In my bedroom it has blinds and at the floor it has a mat and my walls has pictures. My duvet is a soccer duvet and my pillow is soccer too.

Nyakallo. I have my own bed. At my windows I have curtains and on the floor a carpet. In the bathroom I have tiles and my Mom and Dad have a bedroom and a bathroom.

Thato. My curtains are blue and my blankets are green and blue and white and yellow. I have two beds. My beds have their own pillows and the walls in my room have pictures of Dragonball Z.

Bonolo. I have a Bratz bedroom with blinds and on my walls I have lots of pictures of Hannah Montana and High School Musical and The Sweet Life of Zack. I also have carpet and a window and blankets. I also have pillows and on my floor I have tiles.

Sicelo. My bedroom is blue. It has a double bed but it is an upstairs bed and I have my own bedroom and on my windows I have curtains and a carpet on the floor.

Ayabulela. In my bedroom is a mat and yellow walls and also a bathroom in my bedroom. And! Some pictures and pillows and a duvet.

Kamohelo. My bedroom has a TV and I sleep with my sister and my brother. I have three beds and a window and floors and blinds and windows and pillows and brown bricks and wardrobes.

Tokoloho. I share my bedroom with my mom and we have two beds. I sleep with me and my brother and we have a blanket.

Motheo. My bedroom has a window and a floor. I have a big bed. It has a pillow. I have my own bedroom and a blanket.

Sphiwe. I have a bedroom. My sister shares my bedroom. I have a wooden floor and curtains and I have a mat and a wardrobe.

Babatsang. In my bedroom I have my own bed. On my bed it is a blanket. My mom has her own bed and on her bed is a blanket. My dad has his bed and on his bed is a blanket.

Charlotte. My bedroom I share it with my baby brother. In my bedroom we have double beds, double wardrobes. I have a bathroom.

This year, 2011, has been very exciting and, I hope, a wonderful year for the Grade 4 class. They have had many “firsts” this year. They have had to get used to changing classes, many subjects, changing books and, the BIG one, writing tests and exams.

Another big change for them was getting used to different teachers teaching different subjects. I must say that they coped very well.

Mrs De Necker took the class on a historical tour of Bloemfontein. All the learners really enjoyed and appreciated the trip and learned a lot.

The Grade 4's social project was to write beautiful stories to bind in books and give to other schools that do not have a lot of reading books. I must say that there are quite a few budding writers in this group!

It was also my first year as a register teacher for Grade 4. Thank you Grade 4 for being such a wonderful class. You all have a special place in my heart. Have a blessed December holiday. I look forward to seeing you for English in Grade 5.

How rewarding to see the individual development in each learner as the year progresses. It has been my privilege to be with this class, that I just love to bits, for the last two years.

Very often you as a teacher are challenged by personalities but I can also say that I learnt just as much from them as I hope they learnt from me.

We had so much enjoyment in our social project namely helping the Friends of the Zoo, this year. Washing, cleaning, sweeping, hammering and nailing were only some of the many things we were able to do. The enjoyment on faces, care for the animals and the fantastic enthusiasm of parents as well as learners have been the best reward I could have asked for.

One of our highlights was the Bibber Snooze in the middle of winter. As cold as it was, the excitement and

fun were even better with many of our learners winning prizes.

A huge thank you must go to my parents for being so supportive in all areas this year. The extra help in learning areas, joining us at the hockey and soccer matches, functions at school as well as all the Saturdays at the Zoo.

The “GREAT” Grade 6's

Some are fun and others are naughty but I enjoy them a lot. We fight about books left in the lockers or at home, laces that are not tied, shirts that are not tucked in......OH WHAT THE HECK!!! Towards the end of September Exams, Kamo, Thabiso and Boipelo fell asleep after writing NS “ANA” exam. Perhaps they were soooooo tired because the paper was written after break, they had DOUGHNUTS and it was the beginning of a weekend (FRIDAY).

But through all this they grow and are developing in knowledge, love and care.

SO THANK YOU LORD FOR ONE AND ALL, MY GRADE 6'S I ADORE.

In August the grade 6 class had a baby project for 2 weeks. The girls loved this and wanted to feed their babies all the time.

Some grade 6 learners were irresponsible parents and left their babies at school. Naledi, Fiona and Boitumelo even left their babies in their lockers.

To have a baby is hard work and you should be married and older when you have a baby.

In March, the Grade 6's went to the SPCA with Mrs Rankhotha. We learned more about what they do there. We were given a warm welcome and waited for Ntate Jafter to show us around. First we went to see the dogs. That was a lot of fun and some of us even touched them. Then we went to the cats, but we didn't touch them because they looked scary. After that we were shown what food the animals eat.

Prize Giving 2011I have great admiration for Professor Jonathan Jansen, the rector of the University of the Free State. He is forthright and outspoken, but he is passionate about his work and wants desperately to make a difference at our university by making it an institution of excellence.

He said the biggest single problem in the education system in South Africa is low expectations.

People perform to the standards set for them. If you set the bar low, people will only jump that high.

We have to “align” our country and its education with that of other countries in the world and not put blinkers on and fool ourselves that our education is up to scratch

stwith 1 world countries.

We need to teach our children to strive for excellence in an honest and moral way and to set ourselves- parents and teachers - as an example.

In other words we need to “Motivate our children to excellence”.

A Chinese proverb says “A child's life is like a piece of paper on which every person leaves a mark.”

From when I was a little girl my mom and grandmother always told me that if a thing was worth doing, it was worth doing well! And how they motivated and pushed that!

My mom was a teacher and she would not accept less than a child's best – she understood that children and adults were not made equal, but she was aware of each child in her class's capabilities and she motivated and pushed them to do what was their personal best.

At home when school reports came, she and my dad would sit down with of us individually and go through the report. Each subject and comment would be discussed with great care. Compliments were given when marks were good but explanations were asked when others were not good.

My parents never compared one child with another, but they got to know what each one was capable of and woe betide us for unacceptable marks and comments. Then they did not leave it, but kept a close watch on the bad marks until they improved and if they did not improve, then privileges or pocket money were taken away.

When I was learning to sew and knit, only correct work was acceptable and I shed many tears when I was told the stitches were uneven or I had dropped a stitch and should redo it.

This upbringing has motivated me to always do my best. My best might not be as good as someone else's, but it is my best.

Harold Taylor said “The roots of true achievement lie in the will to become the best you can become.”

Elbert Hubbard said “The best preparation for good work tomorrow, is good work today.”

I, myself was inclined to put off till tomorrow what I should have done today. This was a very difficult personal trait to change but through the years, having felt the anxiety undone work causes, I have managed to change this bad habit and now do yesterday, what I only need to do tomorrow because, “Procrastination is the thief of time”.

Parents do you procrastinate? Do you allow your children to procrastinate? If you do allow them to procrastinate then you are demotivating them to excel!

The policy of CBC is that if a task or assignment is not handed in on time and the only excuse is lack of commitment from the learner, then the mark given is 0. At the beginning of every year parents are given this policy to read through and personally sign.At CBC learners are given tasks and assignments timeously, to allow the child to plan, collect information and work on the presentation and application.

Imagine an educator's worry, when a learner deliberately did not hand in her assignment.

The educator phoned the parent to warn her that she would see a 0 on the child's report for this task and the parent replied that a 0 was not acceptable and the school should change the policy!

Nothing about the child being at fault! No, the policy was at fault!

What motivation is this parent giving her child to strive for excellence or is this parent encouraging procrastination in her child?

Victor Ritchie, former headmaster of a school in Cape Town said “Children learn very few values from what we say, but through careful observation of how we behave”.

Parents, you know how hard your parents had to work in the old South Africa to get anywhere.

Don't spoil your children by encouraging procrastination, accepting mediocrity or just plain bad work and results.

Be aware of their capabilities, support them and motivate them, by your words, your actions and your own example.

At Family day on Saturday I asked a Grade 4 mom how her son was progressing. He had experienced great concentration and attention problems in Grade 1. The doctor had prescribed medication but this had dulled his responses and attention so much that I, the Grade 1 teacher asked for him to be taken off the medication. The doctor agreed. The mom said it had been an uphill battle and an exhausting few years since then. She and her husband had sat with the son day after day, week in week out, doing his homework with him, helping him study, assisting with projects. His brain slowly adjusted to its deficits and overcame its problems. He is now scoring above average marks, is more self-assured and confident. The mom said she wouldn't want those 3 years over again, but they were worth the effort when she and her husband saw the improvement in their son and the success he is now achieving.

A real story of parental dedication to motivate a child to achieve personal excellence.

Benjamin Disraeli said “The secret of success is constancy to purpose.”

A girl I knew at high school, was one of the students chosen out of 240 girls to take Art as a subject in high school from Grade 9 to matric. When her mother heard she wanted to take Art instead of History, she flatly refused to allow her to. When the girl told the Art teacher she was not allowed to take Art, the Art teacher went to the principal and said that the girl showed good talent and her talent would be wasted doing History, whereupon the principal phoned the girl's mother to come in to see her for a chat. The principal, the Art teacher, the mother and girl sat down and after a lengthy and quite heated discussion the mother gave her permission. When the mother and the girl walked out of the principal's office the mother turned to the girl and said, “You have gone against my wishes and embarrassed me in front of the principal and teacher. You can do Art, but don't ever ask me for help or expect me to show interest in your Art!”

The girl studied Art for the 4 years with no interest or help from her mom, but was determined to be the best she could be. The girl achieved well in her matric art exam and received the Award for the best Art student in matric.

Not a story of parental support and motivation, but an example of self-motivation to excellence!

Our present head-prefect has to be admired and is a glowing example of motivation to excellence.

She has no mother or father. She lives in the CBC house with Mrs Sullivan, who was a stranger to her when she moved in 2 or 3 years ago. Her uncle, a trustee of her Trust fund, lives in Johannesburg. He looks after her financially but from a distance. She is head prefect, guiding her team of prefects to run the school efficiently. She is one of our top matric students at CBC,She has represented CBC and the Free State in country wide debating She was in the top 50 Science students in the Free State in 2010She attended the People to People Leadership summit in Los Angeles in 2010She has participated in and won the Individual Award at the Model United Nations Conference in New York in 2011And so her list of achievements goes on.She has no-one to keep pushing her, except an inner and personal drive to succeed. She is greatly admired by the staff for being a motivated achiever, and a down to earth, responsible, helpful and friendly person.

She “knows what she wants to do, holds the thought firmly, and does every day what should be done, and every sunset sees her that much nearer to her goal.”

Nelson Mandela said “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”

I read an article about a young man from a township in Durban, Siphile Buthelezi. Not a member of Chief Buthelezi's immediate, moneyed family.

His mom was a domestic servant and his dad a construction worker.

Siphile and his brother and sister went from house to house every afternoon after school, selling second hand clothes to earn extra money for the family.

From when he started school, his mom woke him every morning at 4 o'clock to help him with his homework as this was the only time she could. She said “the life I have now, is because I never got an education. School is like church. In the beginning you go because your parents make you. You don't know why you go but you have to. Eventually you realize how important it is. It is as important to have education in your life as it is to have God in your life.”

His parents continued to motivate him to excel throughout his school life.

He is now a young 27 year old lawyer with a firm in New York. He doesn't dwell on those dark days but says that the guidance, discipline, example and motivation his parents gave him then, gave him determination and kept him on the straight and narrow road to excellence and success.

On the world stage the best team will win, whether that team is a business team, a cultural team, a sports team.

International sport is a perfect example. “Sports serve society by providing vivid examples of excellence.”

In sport, the team who is the fittest, the most motivated and the most talented will win.

The teachers at CBC are motivated by Mr Borchard to strive for excellence. We do not have a young staff, but we have an experienced staff who have passed the youth of their teaching and through experience, know towards what they are striving. They work as a team towards the same goal and that goal is excellence in your child.

We have a firm but fair code of discipline at CBC and many parents have said “we want our child at CBC because of the good discipline and good code of ethics”.

From Grade 1 to matric we strive to inculcate into the learners that their best is what we are motivating them towards.

We do not accept the Education Department's lower pass mark – we encourage each child to strive for above 50%. If a child achieves 50% it means only half of what is required is known. How can one achieve excellence if the aim is only ½ of excellence?

How would you feel if you were going in for an operation and you heard that the surgeon only knew half of what he should know?

In conclusion, I would like to thank every parent who supports their child everyday in everything that they do. I don't mean by doing it for them, but by being beside them, behind them and motivating them to do their best in everything they do. I would also like to thank the staff and Mr Borchard for the firm but loving support and motivation to personal excellence they give the learners of CBC. As a parent said the other night at a PTA meeting, “It is only when your child leaves CBC and ventures into the big real world that you realize and appreciate what CBC has done for your child”.

That is, to instill in them a sense of self-worth, good morals and values, as well as motivation to excellence.

Helping each child to accept responsibility for his life and knowing that it is he or she who will get themselves where they want to go, no one else.”

Let us together - “Motivate your child to excellence”.

During the first weekend of March Mr and Mrs Noeth took the class to “On Track Adventures” outside Hobhouse for a leadership camp. The children enjoyed it, and we returned on the Sunday tired after a marvellous adventure. As part of our community project we visited the Free State Residential care in Rayton to support them during the spring festival.

Towards the end of the year we look forward to going to grade 8.

What a year it's been!

We started off the year with nine new pupils in our class:Ÿ Basetsana M.Ÿ Ofentse N.Ÿ Limpho M.Ÿ Reoagile S.Ÿ David S.Ÿ Sipho M.Ÿ Pelo. D.Ÿ Ebenezer M.Ÿ Hector S.

We also had a new teacher for the term, Mr Gouws, who always gave class detentions because of our behaviour.

Dumo M., Khanyisa G. and Ofentse M. received their first diamonds, of which they are proud.

At the beginning of the second term, our class teacher, Me Tlale, came back from her break at home. Further into the second term, we had the May project and our class came in second place. Bakang T., Lulama M., and Bonolo N. took part in the annual Junior Winter Festival that took place in Pretoria. Dumo M. made the U19 Inter CBC soccer team

and they set off to Kimberley to defend the Inter CBC Soccer Cup.

As we went into the third term, our parents were called in for a meeting to discuss our behaviour.

We then asked a few of our new classmates how they felt at the beginning of the year and this is what they said:

Sipho: I had preconceived ideas and thought I was not going to fit in.

Ofentse N.: I was very excited and couldn't wait to meet my new classmates.

And when we asked them how they feel, they said:

Sipho: I feel like I fit in better and it's like family.

Reoagile: I am still trying to fit in and adapt to the teachers' response towards me, but other than that, it's going well.

In conclusion, we had a blast in 2011.

Grade 9's there's so much to say about this class, we are just too awesome.

The name we'd been given last year, 'the quad class', was soon forgotten as we stopped being stupid, as Mr Daly puts it.

This year was quite an exciting one for us because we were looking forward to Zastron. Zastron gave us an opportunity to spend time together and to get to know each other beyond classroom walls.

This is our third year with Mr Myburgh as our class teacher, and indeed time seems to fly by when you're having fun. 2011 was an interesting but fun year.

Grade 10 was certainly a new experience for all of us, with the enormous change in workload and the new subjects i.e. Physical Science, Mathematics, Mathematical Literacy, Geography, Business Studies and Accounting.

Right through the year we experienced numerous challenges and moments of extreme laughter, sadness, disappointment and surprise. Napo, Ketso and Khayalethu received inter-CBC ties, Jared and Mohau were placed second in the Free-State for the United Nations Debate and we as a class decided to

help raise funds and gather clothing and tinned food for the people in Ficksburg that were hit by the tornado.

During the year we also had the privilege of welcoming Tobias Nagel, an exchange student from Germany; he will be staying with us until the end of June next year. Right throughout the year, with our various debates, activities, jokes, conversations and events, we grew, both as individuals and as a class.

We look forward to next year's challenges with anticipation and confidence, knowing that God will always be with us, helping us and guiding us along the way with his infinite wisdom and mercy.

The year 2011 has come with many pressures, some expected but most unexpected. This pre-matric year has given us all a taste of what is yet to come. An air of maturity swept right through the class as we came to realise the significance of a consistent academic achievement that is beyond mediocre.

Through the various fund-raising activities we have been in charge of, we learnt the essence and importance of teamwork. Teamwork was also the reason why we could host a matric farewell of excellent standard. It was very hard work but an evening to be remembered by everyone who attended the function.

In conclusion we acknowledge the persistence, constant motivation and constructive criticism from Mrs Miennie who kept us on our toes when we needed it most.

This has been a fantastic, stressful and very short year. Being in matric is equivalent to being thrown into the wild with a survival kit. While many people may think it is just an analogy, that is the only way we can express the degree of difficulty we experienced in this year. Without the support of our teachers and the support amongst ourselves, we would not have survived.

The most unforgettable part of the year was the interhouse fun day because of the remarkable entrance, thanks to Baleni's initiative. The 40 days following the fun day was a great build-up for the matric farewell and I doubt any class following us will be able to top that!

Everyone in our class has been such a great sport, they all deserve Honours Blazers !!

Big Walk

The annual PTA Big Walk fundraiser was held on Saturday 5 February on the school grounds. The enthusiasm of the learners and their parents was good.

Despite the recent abundance of rain, the weather was once again cool and very conducive to a 3 or 5 km walk. Many of the grade 1, 2 and 3 learners were disappointed that their 3 laps went past so quickly.

As a result we might revert to everyone doing 5 laps next year. Some learners ran and some walked briskly. The PTA food and cold drink stall did well and was much appreciated by all. Learners who did not participate did the walk the following Friday. The amount raised wasR20 000. A big thanks once again to the PTA and staff for their enthusiasm and interest.

Mother & Daughter Tea

The PTA Mothers / Daughters' Get together was held from 14h00 to 18h00 on Saturday 14 May 2011.

A new idea for this event was that it becomes the responsibility of the Grade One mothers. Mrs Mpho Tshilo offered to be the main organizer and co-ordinator.

Mrs Tshilo asked various Grade One moms to form a committee and with the help of a group of matric girls, had meetings to organize the events, refreshments, gifts, etc.

What an enjoyable afternoon it was!! On arrival each guest was given a soup bowl and a cushion. Both items had “CBC Mothers/Daughters Tea” printed / embroidered on it. They also received a packet containing the items needed for the making of earrings.

The hall's setting was informal, with moms and daughters sitting where they were comfortable. Tea and chocolate cake was served to begin the afternoon. Various motivational and in-depth speeches were presented, a “How well do you know your mom/daughter “ competition was held, followed by the making of bead earrings, then karaoke fun and a dance competition – won by Thando Nkwane's granny!

Delicious hot soup and bread rolls ended the afternoon. Everyone agreed that it was a most pleasant and entertaining afternoon and they looked forward to the 2012 get together.

Despite it not being a “fund-raising” event – a profit of R1 250.00 was made.A VERY big “Thank you” must go to Mrs Tshilo, the Grade One mommies and the matric girls for their enthusiasm in organizing such a lovely afternoon.

SCIENCE EXPO 2011

This year the science department entered 4 projects. The grade 10 learners showed a keen interest in chemistry with their projects:

Ÿ Chemicals everyday – Jade Scott and Neo Shale demonstrated that chemicals are present in everything that we use and we must be aware of the effect that it can have on us.

Ÿ Caution very hot – Hlompang Mohai and Napo Modise described the exothermic reaction when baking soda reacts to form strong glue.

Ÿ Urine saved them – Jared Sukdaven and Katiso Moeketsi explained how the reaction with urine can neutralize chlorine gas.

SCIENCE CONVENTION 2011 – POTCHEFSTROOM

National competition.

Three grade 11 learners ended in the top 50 after writing the Science Olympiad. We were invited to the University of the North West in Potchefstroom. I expected to see little Einsteins but I was disappointed because everyone looked normal and this just shows that anyone can do it if they really believe in themselves and their abilities.

We were showed around campus and attended various activities:

The gala event and the award ceremony were held at a beautiful venue on the outskirts of the town and we were entertained by the talents of the students of NWU. We all learned something from the trip and that will be part of our lives forever.

Religious Education ReportWe are privileged to be able to give our children the values that Jesus taught. At the beginning of the year we had our customary retreat. This time the RADS team organised by Mrs. Speckmeier joined us. The Retreat was different, great fun and very informative.

In the programme we offer at school – Life bound (juniors) and the Cord (seniors) syllabi our children learn to experience God in a variety of ways. They are introduced to a variety of Scriptural images of God – father, mother, creator, spirit, friend, leader, someone to trust, one who forgives, invites and challenges, whose actions are like those of a gardener, a potter, unseen, powerful, the Holy Spirit as fire, wind, the “artisan of God's works”, helper and guide in prayer.

I would like to say thank you to Fathers John and Leo for their guidance and dedication to the college. Thanks goes to His Grace Archbishop Jabulani and Fr Pat Towe. Fr Pat is the University Chaplin and often helps us with celebrations at the school.

It is with sadness that we say good bye to Fr. John who will be retiring from active duty. Thank you, Father, for all your wonderful contributions to our community. May the road rise to meet you… we wish you great blessings.

Mrs. Karen Vorster and Mrs. Malherbe are a constant source of inspiration in the music department with music, songs and hymns for our monthly celebrations.

Staff were given the chance to re-charge our batteries and in the second term we took a weekend and went off to Assissi. Thanks to Mr Borchard for a very creative weekend!

Our ERS programme continues to grow under the guidance of Mrs de Necker. The organization has some 70 members and they do sterling work in the community. Mrs de Necker accompanies the girls and boys on various outings in the community and they give their time and often limited funds which the children donate themselves to the needy in our community. Well done, boys and girls – keep up the good work.

I was privileged to attend two RE conferences this year. One in Cape Town and one at Assissi. Social justice is the emphasis in the Christian Brothers organisation this year and this will continue next year. It is important for our children to realise that they are privileged to be attending a school such as CBC. The emphasis is on our environment and the social justices of our country and then the world should make us aware of how fragile our world community is. The poverty in Somalia has made us acutely aware that we need to pay more attention to this aspect of our world.

Thanks must go to Mr. Borchard for all his enthusiasm and encouragement to us all. I know your task is not an easy one.

Whatever (sticks down, jogging etc) we asked from our girls, they were prepared to give. Thank you to all the girls (Gr 1 – U/12) for the way you played, your manners and what we could learn from all of you. We tackled each match on its own, making the best of it if we did not win! We had fun participating in all the festivals-won some, lost some and drew some. All the girls had a chance to play in a league match or festival.

In hockey we try to grow in body and spirit, develop skills, attitude and make new friendships. The whole Mini-Hockey team consists of Mrs P. Van Zijl, with her endless patience teaching the Gr 1's, Mrs W. Van Huyssteen who trains the U/10's so that when they

get to U/12 they know what they are doing, and last but not least Mrs de Necker for training and preparing the U/12's to be Free State Players.

I would like to thank Mr Borchard for supporting us and making sure that we have transport to and from matches. A big thank you to all the girls for always trying your best, for making a point to thank and praise God for the chances and opportunities that you have at CBC.

The grade 1 girls were an enthusiastic group. They developed into skilful players and thoroughly enjoyed participating in the festivals and matches against other Bloemfontein schools.

It has once again been a pleasant experience coaching the U/10 hockey girls. This year we were a group of 32 girls – the biggest group ever!

We played numerous matches and festivals and whatever the outcome of the game was, the girls supported each other and always gave of their best.

It always amazes me to see the development of skills and knowledge of the game during the season. I do believe that we have to develop fitness as we tend to lose speed during the second half of our games.

A huge thank you must go to Antonay for all the time, effort and knowledge that she was prepared to share with me and the girls.

Thank you, girls, for never giving up, for putting in extra effort when and where it was needed and for your enjoyment of the game.

I believe that we succeeded due to the fact that we always asked God to be the centre of our games. May you always enjoy the game and support each other as much as you did this year.

Every year brings new faces, laughs, experiences and challenges with the U12 girls.

When I look back, I can only feel joy and appreciation for all the girls who always had a smile no matter what exercise I had them do. Push ups, running, balancing balls and monkey walks became part of our exercise ritual.

The “ma'am I will never make it” changed into “ma'am did we really do all this?” I believe that we tried our best despite the fact that we did not win all our games during this season. We gained in experience by playing against our bigger counterparts in the region. The festivals gave us the opportunity to play against schools from outside Bloemfontein and we upheld the reputation that we have for a good game, excellent manners and extremely good sportsmanship.

Senior Hockey Report

This year all our teams have managed to grow up a lot and had a prosperous season.

The new coaches that have come along have helped us improve our standard of playing hockey, and by doing that we have all achieved results our school can be very proud of.

U14:In their B league, the girls managed to keep a clean record by not losing a single match.

U16:Throughout all our difficulties, we managed to keep our spirit and work harder each and every time we stepped off the field.

U18:This being some of the players' last year, we are very sad to be losing players of such a high standard. They worked hard and deserved every single reward that has been presented to them, while having fun.

This year's Inter-CBC tournament brought with it a bit of sadness for the St. Joseph's girls, as we stepped down from being the champions in the previous year.

Although it brought some sadness with it, we managed to find a silver lining which was to work hard and have fun, as a unit.

We'd like to thank all the managers and coaches who helped make this hockey season a memorable one.

On the 4th of August the Inter CBC soccer boys and Netball girls departed to Kimberley at 06h00. We arrived in Kimberley at 08h00. The managers and coaches went to a meeting and right after the meeting, the matches began. After the matches we were taken to our lodge. Our first match was against Veritas College and we lost 6-9. The second game for the day was against St. Boniface and we lost 6-9. Our last match for the day was against St. Patrick's and they beat us 6-8. After our matches we went out for refreshments.

The second day we played against Mount Edmund and lost 21-3, second and last match of the day was against St. Bernard's and we lost9-3. After the games we went back to the lodge

for a muscle relaxation session in the swimming pool. We then headed back to St. Patrick's for the social.

The third day we played our last two games for the trip. We played against Mariasdal and lost10-3 and against St. Dominic's and we lost 13-3.

Mamello Gill was chosen to attend SA. CBC Netball trials and immediately after trials we had mass. We departed from St Patrick's at 13h00 on Saturday the 6th of August and arrived in Bloem at 15h00.

Soccer Grade 1

Like always, this year's soccer season started with the 5-a-side tournament here at CBC. Our U9 and U11 A teams progressed to the semi-finals before being knocked out. The league matches were played every Tuesday and this always provided lots of excitement for the boys. CBC teams were always very competitive and displayed good sportsmanship.

The highlights for our U13's this season was to participate in the first sponsored (Build It) Bloemfontein Schools Knockout Tournament and then also the Inter CBC Festival in Pretoria. St Joseph’s CBC did exceptionally well, losing only to Pretoria.

A big thank you once again to all our refs, coaches and supporters for a most enjoyable and successful season.

Senior SoccerThis year our BFSSA league committee was not effective enough to organize league games for all schools. However, CBC principal, Mr Borchard organised a social league for the U15, U17 and U19 consisting of 6 teams. Our 1st team, U19, played and even though we didn't win the Inter-CBC again, they showed great spirit. Thanks to all the teams for their hard work and thanks again to Mr Borchard for organizing the social league for us and supporting us.

Inter CBC SoccerOn the fourth of August 2011, Miss Tlale, Mr Moncur and Mr Mokoena accompanied by two coaches took the netball and soccer teams to Kimberley. We arrived at 8:30, took team photos and went to play our 1st game. It was against Pretoria and we lost 1-0. Our second match was against the hosts, St. Patrick's, Kimberley. We drew this match 2 all.

We went to our lodge to unpack and prepare for next day's matches. On Friday morning we had breakfast, and went to St. Patrick's College. We played against Veritas that morning and beat them 1-0. After lunch we played our last game knowing that we had to win with more than 3 goals to go the semi-final. The game was against St. Dominic's and we beat them 5-0.

On Saturday, the boys woke up very early, anxious and excited, We went to play against St. Boniface and lost 0-1.We played Mariasdal for third and fourth place and drew 1-1 and lost on a penalty shoot-out. That was the end of our trip. Some of our senior players had not made the team but they supported us all the way. To those who made the team, make CBC St Joseph's proud and win the Inter-CBC next year!!

Every year seems to be filled with more and more events on the music front. This year is no exception! After the initial enthusiasm I can soon see who has talent and the will to practise, because only hard work will give you success!!! We have two new teachers who are helping to expand our Music Department: Me Beth Giani (Violin) and Mrs Chrisna Smit (Guitar). Most of the learners took part in at least one item at the Free State Eisteddfod, and they all did very well. We had a lovely Pre-Eisteddfod Concert to help them get ready for the big performance. Thank you to all the parents who gave us donations towards the”new music stand” fund. We bought two lovely new music stands with that money! For our outreach-programme we go to Siesta Old Age Home on a regular basis to perform and gave a lovely concert for their Monthly birthday-tea function. The number of learners who now take lessons for Keyboard and Piano playing has doubled in the last year! The enthusiasm of potential pupils made such an impact on me, that I decided to take 4 Secondary learners who don't have any musical instrument to practise on! And to my surprise, one of our past pupils (who does not want to be identified) gave away a very special keyboard to a worthy learner. This was presented to Mohau at Assembly during August. She will be watching his progress eagerly!!

On Friday 16 September the Bloemfontein Recorder Festival was held in the Doxa Deo Church and all our recorder learners took part in this very prestigious event! This was a special evening and music was played on 6 different kinds of Recorders! From the smallest, these are: Sopranino, Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass and a Contra-bass!! Our learners played in a Mass group of nearly 200 learners from different schools and including 16 music teachers. The String orchestra and Marimba band did the accompanying together with an electrical organ. It is a privilege to play together and be part of such a wonderful and rich sound! I am very proud of all who participated!

Music is a very big part of the tradition at every CBC Mass. Not only do the children sing very beautifully, we now have different groups of instrumentalists who play during all of these functions The Junior orchestra, consisting of 35 learners made us all proud at the Junior School's Prize-giving at the end of September. The music group that accompanied the learners when they opened the Senior School's Prize-giving with their singing, was of very high standard! Thank you to all who participated.I want to thank the parents for continuous support and for enrolling your child into the music programme of our school. You unlock the wonderful world of music-making for them!!!

What a privilege once again to have been part of the ERS of our school. Our young people have strength, values and with God as their foundation I have high hopes for our country.

Despite the fact that we hardly had any chance to visit our less fortunate young people, the meetings were dynamic with extremely good attendance under the leadership of Tsepang and her team. Thank you for the example that you have set for the new leaders to follow. I know that Kgantshe and her team will bring their own flair and flavour to the ERS.

We had a wonderful camp at Hobhouse where nobody was made to feel inadequate and the support that was given to each other was fantastic no matter how clean or dirty the task at hand. The masked faces, muddy bodies, tiredness but with big smiles were evidence of this.

Our Christmas Party was celebrated in Heidedal with a lady who gives her all to 45 little ones under difficult circumstances. Thank you for opening your hearts with all the eats and gifts but most of all, your love and care. The smiles on their faces said it all.

I had the honour of organizing the ERS Rally at Assissi again this year. As always, I experienced the love of God, the presence of the Holy Spirit, shared in many joys but also in the hardships that so many of our youngsters have to face on a daily basis.

We adopted the school at Assissi and handed over books and writing material brought from all over the country. During the year one of our sister schools donated school shoes for all the children. Needs will be identified for 2012 and hopefully we will be able to make a difference in the lives of a community that desperately needs it.

Thank you ERS members, that you live according to the example of Edmund Rice but most of all Jesus. As an ERS member I believe that: You are giving You're not miserly, selfish or greedy.But you esteem others above your own self,as you offer your life to the needy.

Junior Debating Junior debating

The junior debating was started at the request of some grade 6 and 7 students. I believe that this is a wonderful way for students to become more fluent in English and also to be able to put their thoughts and opinions in order.

Jared Sukdaven has been a wonderful help to me. He virtually taught the young debaters all about debating and made them argue their points logically and clearly. He also taught them the rules of debating and how to think on their feet.

I believe that Mrs Conradie will have a wonderful choice of first class debaters to choose from next year!

I hope to carry on with the junior debating next year.

Senior debating

At the beginning of the year, Tshepang Afrika went to New York as part of the South African Model United Nations Team and competed against approximately 700 learners from all over the world. The South African team was chosen as the best team and Tshepang was awarded an Honourable Mention. Well done, Tshepang !

Two senior and two junior teams competed locally. The Senior A team was Gomolemo Mochoari, Neo Molisapoli and Xola Matlanyane and Jared Sukdaven, Mochau Lecheko and Napo Modise formed the Senior B team. The Junior A team consisted of Limpho Mofokeng, Lebohang Raleting and Ofentse Nkwaelipo with Mohlomi Mpedi, Reitumetse Madelo and Calvin le John in the Junior B team.

Both the Senior A and the Junior A teams went through to the quarter final round and the Junior A team won the quarter final round.

Chess

Chess Report

CBC entered two teams in the Bloemfontein league this year. These two teams represented St Josephs at the Inter-CBC Hockey and Chess Tournament in Welkom during April. We had great success and came second out of eight teams. The boys showed enthusiasm, discipline, dress code and good manners and they received many compliments from the teachers of the other participating schools.

Christoffer Kjaer, an exchange student from Denmark, also enjoyed participation when we played against the other teams.

The chess team had great success in the Bloemfontein league. In the B-league we came third with Kuan-Yu Lin and Tlou Lebentlele winning board prizes. The E-league team came second with Tsiamo Ramatsekane, Mofenye Masisi and Kgosi Taye winning board prizes.

Lukanyo Mantyi, our B-league captain, and Vladic van Wyk are leaving us at the end of the year.

Thank you to all the guys for making 2011 a successful chess year.
