John A. Logan College More than 150 local officials from through- out Southern Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri and Tennes- see attended FEMA Region V earthquake preparedness training at John A. Logan Col- lege on January 27-28 to learn more about how a major earth- quake would impact the region and what their communities can do to prepare. It was the first regional train- ing summit in prepar- edness for next year’s national mock earthquake exercise training. “Through this summit, we hope to foster strong rela- tionships with elected offi- cials, the private sector and the response commu- nity in Southern Illinois, which will enable us to work together on earth- quake preparedness,” said IEMA Director Andrew Velasquez III. “While we hope a major earthquake never occurs, we simply cannot afford to be com- placent.” According to FEMA’s New Madrid Catastrophic Plan- ning Initiative Phase 2 Report, a 7.7 magnitude earthquake along the New Madrid Seismic Zone could cause $300 billion in direct economic losses within an eight-state impacted area, while indirect economic losses could total twice that amount. In addition, as many as 3,500 fatali- ties could occur through- out the affected region, with 7.2 million people displaced and two million people seeking temporary shelter. How Do I Cancel?

Do I get college credit for these courses?

Yes. Attendees can earn vocational skills credit from John A. Logan College for all computer and skills management courses.

John A. Logan College –- Center for Business and Industry now offers a training program for those who wish to learn skills for an entry-level healthcare pro-fession. The John A. Logan College Pharmacy Technician program prepares stu-dents to enter the pharmacy field in hospitals, home infusion pharmacies, or commu-nity pharmacies as an ancillary. Pharmacy technician’s work under the supervision of a registered pharmacist.

Course content will include medical terminology specific to the pharmacy, reading and interpreting prescriptions, and defining drugs by generic and brand names. Stu-

dents will learn dosage calculations, I.V. flow rates, drug compounding and dose conversions. Dispensing prescriptions, inventory control, billing and reimbursement will also be discussed. Schedule of courses is posted online http://www.jalc.edu/cbi/pharmacy_technician_certification.php

Completion requirements: Upon successful completion of the program students will receive a John

A. Logan College Certificate of Completion and will be eligible to take the National Pharmacy Technician

Exam. To receive the Certificate students must have a good attendance record, complete all assignments,

and successfully pass quizzes and exams. Although this is a CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDIT

program, letter grades will be assigned.

Admission requirements: Students must possess a high school diploma or GED.

Length of program: 12 weeks. Includes 60 classroom hours.

Classroom times: 6:30-9:00 p.m.

Classroom location: John A. Logan College Workforce Development Building, Room H126.

Cost: $999.00 includes textbooks, supplies and materials.

Refund Policy: Once you are registered, you must call to cancel your enrollment. Refunds will not be given once the class has started. The College reserves the right to cancel any program. In such cases, a full refund is made.

Illinois Mandates Certification Beginning on January 1, 2010, within 2 years after being employed as a registered technician, a pharmacy technician must become certified by successfully passing the PTCB examination or another Board‐approved pharmacy technician examination in order to continue to perform pharmacy technician's duties. This requirement does not apply to phar‐macy technicians hired prior to January 1, 2008.

The Center for Business & Industry can add additional classes for groups at no extra charge. Please call to schedule additional courses.
