How to Navigate Through This Presentation
Later in this presentation, you will have the opportunity to select which slides to view based upon the options listed on the Options Menu screen by using the arrows to the left. If you get to the wrong option, just click the Options Menu arrow to return to the menu page.
You will also find some helpful links to the ECU website. After viewing this presentation, take some time to visit the ECU website and especially the Current Students link where most of your resources are located. Click the Next arrow to get started!

The next few slides will introduce you to the people you will meet and work with as an Intended Nursing Major. Students are designated as Intended Majors until they gain admission to Nursing. Nursing advisors are located on the Main Campus and on the Health Sciences Campus.

RN/BSN & RN/MSN
The BSN option is the traditional 4-year option for students who are not yet Registered Nurses seeking the BSN as a first or second undergraduate degree.
Minimum Degree Requirements—128 semester hours
•Prerequisites—approximately 61 semester hours that enable students to satisfy
• Foundations Curriculum—required by ECU
• Cognates—required for admission to Nursing
•Major (Nursing) courses—67 semester hours that are completed after a student gains admission to nursing

The RN/BSN option is an online degree completion option for students who are already Registered Nurses.
Minimum Degree Requirements—128 semester hours
• Prerequisites—approximately 61 semester hours that enable students to satisfy
• Foundations Curriculum—required by ECU
• Cognates—required for admission to Nursing
• Major (nursing) courses—31 semester hours completed after a student is admitted to nursing
• Major special nursing placement credit—34 semester hours awarded after completion of NURS 3025

The RN/MSN students do not earn an undergraduate degree since they complete only a portion of the RN/BSN Curriculum as undergraduate students.
RN/MSN students complete

•Major (Nursing) courses—15-18 semester hours of the RN/BSN Curriculum as undergraduate students
The RN/MSN students apply early to the ECU Graduate School as they are finishing their RN/BSN courses and compete for admission to an MSN Concentration. The admission process is very competitive.

This is a Graduate option that allows students with a
4-year degree in a field other than nursing to bypass the BSN and apply directly to the ECU Graduate School and pursue an MSN Concentration.

Phase IConsists of one complete academic year (including both summer sessions) of specially designed graduate courses that include content and experiences that are required to prepare the students to take the Registered Nurse Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN), and also to prepare students for advanced study in nursing at the master's level.
All Phase I courses must be satisfactorily completed before the student is eligible to take the NCLEX-RN. The sequence of Phase I courses begins only in the Fall. During this time, full-time enrollment, in a traditional classroom setting, is required.
Phase IIConsists of the MSN Concentration (see the College of Nursing website).

Students who have already earned a 4-year degree in a field other than nursing and are not yet Registered Nurses often pursue the BSN as a second undergraduate degree.

•Prerequisites—completion of all Cognates required for admission to Nursing. Students seeking the BSN as a second degree should contact the College of Nursing for evaluation since the courses needed depends upon courses completed during the student’s first degree

Admission checklist for students who are getting ready to apply for admission to the RN/BSN Option. Students must be admitted to ECU through Undergraduate Admissions and meet the following requirements.
•Associate degree or diploma in nursing from an approved nursing program •Current, unrestricted license to practice as a registered nurse in North Carolina (International applicants must validate credentials with the Commission of Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools before applying for RN licensure.) or an NCSBN-compact state •Minimum requirements as specified in the current undergraduate catalog •Minimum overall grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale •Grade of C or higher in all mathematics and science courses •Satisfactory completion of prerequisite general education and cognate courses

Admission checklist for students who are getting ready to apply for admission to the RN/MSN Option. Students must be admitted to ECU through Undergraduate Admissions and meet the following requirements.

For information on the MAT, please visit the ECU Testing Center or call 252-328-6811.) •One year of experience as a registered nurse •Minimum requirements as specified in the current undergraduate catalog •Minimum overall grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale •Minimum nursing grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale •Grade of C or higher in all mathematics and science courses •Satisfactory completion of all pre-requisite general education and cognate courses Applicants for specific concentrations within the graduate program must also meet any additional criteria for the concentration. A course in statistics and an undergraduate course in nursing research are prerequisite for all MSN concentrations in nursing. A course in basic accounting is a prerequisite for the Clinical Services Administration concentration.

RN/BSN students have three options for completing their 31 hours nursing courses. See the College of Nursing website (http://www.nursing.ecu.edu/rn_bsn_plans.htm).
3 Semester—the is a full time option and not recommended for students who are employed. Students complete all courses in three semesters and usually start in the fall.4 Semester—note that the third semester is full time5 Semester—students complete two courses per semester. This is option that is typically preferred by students.
Note: If the 3 Semester or 4 Semester option is selected, the student will be taking two Writing Intensive courses and the Planning and Assessment Phase of the Leadership & Service Learning Project in one semester. This is an extremely heavy load and not recommended for students who are employed.

RN/MSN students are undergraduate students who complete 15 – 18 semester hours of the RN/BSN curriculum. These students do not earn a BSN. They bypass the BSN. See the College of Nursing website (http://www.nursing.ecu.edu/rn_msn_plan.htm).
When enrolled in NURS 4420, these students apply to the ECU Graduate School and compete for admission to an MSN Concentration.
Note: NURS 3410 (Concepts of Pathophysiology) is strongly recommended for students who plan to pursue the Nursing Education, Family Nurse Practitioner, Neonatal Nurse Practitioner, and Nurse Midwifery Concentrations.

•Be prepared to spend 9 hours per week on each 3-hour course•Avoid full time enrollment in online courses if employed•Access the Division of Continuing Studies website (http://www.ecu.edu/options/distanceed.cfm) and

Admission is based upon
• Satisfactory completion of required courses including all foundations curriculum and prerequisite coursework.
• Meeting minimum GPA requirements
• NLN PAX preadmission exam scores
• Ranking formula which is primarily based upon GPA
• Satisfactory criminal background check
• Satisfactory drug test
Once admitted to the BSN option, attendance during one summer session is required in order to progress to the 4000 level BSN courses.

Students planning to apply for admission to the College of Nursing BSN option are required to take the NLN Pre-Admission Exam (PAX). Check the College of Nursing website regularly for updated information, registration instructions and test dates.
The exam will assess students in the areas of
•Verbal skills—including word knowledge and reading comprehension
•Mathematics—including basic calculations, word problems, and incorporates algebra, geometry, conversions, graphs, and applied mathematics
•Science—including general biology, chemistry, physics, and earth science. The NLN PAX-PN includes the above content as well as a section on health and first aid.Beginning

• Preference for admission will be given to students who earn a composite score of 110 or higher and perform at the 50th percentile or higher in each sub-test (math, science, verbal) of the NLN PAX
• Students must register to take the test at least two weeks in advance of the test date. Earlier registration is recommended since seating capacity is limited.
• There is a 6-month waiting period between each attempt on the test and students are advised to take the NLN PAX as early as possible in order to allow time for study and re-taking the test as needed.
• Students may retake the NLN PAX – up to the number of versions available.

1 point—awarded to those currently on the Nurse Aid I (NA1) Registry or LPN Registry.

Admission to the BSN is very competitive, so Grade Point Average (GPA) is very important. In order to achieve a competitive GPA, you should strive for a GPA well above 3.0. Also, remember that
•A GPA of 2.5 or higher is required to be classified as (remain) an Intended Nursing Major•A GPA of 2.5 or higher is required to register for the required Biology courses•The average GPA of students admitted to the traditional 4-year BSN option has typically been between 3.3 – 3.6 for the last several years
All prerequisites must be completed prior to admission.
The Nursing courses are taken in the order listed on the curriculum plan once a student is admitted to Nursing.

You should call the College of Nursing to notify us of your admission to ECU and to schedule an appointment to meet with an advisor to discuss your registration plans and receive your Registration PIN.
Students should plan to take 15 – 16 semester hours each semester in order to complete prerequisites in 4 semesters.
If this course load is too intense, students may consider taking 12 – 14 semester hours each semester and complete the prerequisites in 5 semesters.
Note: Tuition/fees for 100% online courses (courses with section numbers in the 600’s) is a separate charge in addition to campus tuition/fees.
